Unhappy Need CV Advice

So whats the best way to get the hose clamp that is on my 07 Taco off? Also do I need to jack my suspension up so that I can slide the boot back on or is there a better way to do it? What type of hose clamp should I replace it with? What type of grease do I need? I will be starting this project around 12 today when I get off work so any advice before I start will help.

And for the people that don't know my CV boot ( the one closest to the tire ) sliped off the shaft. I need to get it back on the shaft re-grease it and secure it in place.

How long has the boot been off? Did dirt or water get in?

Auto parts stores sell a re-boot kit. It contains: Grease, Boot and the band clamps. It doesn't sound like you need the boot. They may sell just the grease and the clamps. It is different grease than wheel grease.

About 12 hours the boot is still covering the cv but it slid down to the point where it was leaking grease. I had no choice but to drive it to work today since I did not have another vehicle. Its only about 10 - 15 miles to my work and I took it slow and easy. I plan on picking all the stuff up on my way home from work. I plan on rebooting it and them some time in the next month pulling it apart and cleaning it and re-boot it again. But for now I just need it covered. The boot never tore and looks to be in good shape other wise.

To completely replace the boot, you have to take the whole shaft apart. Since you're asking, I'd assume you don't have experience doing this and therefore it's safe to say it will take you a while. If it's just the band that has slid off, do like others suggested and use a hose clamp or similar. I found some metal zip ties at a store that would probably work too.

Here's some links to help you:
This is a write up on a manual hub conversion. I'm not suggesting you convert, but the pix are good and will show you the parts and how to take it all apart, etc.

And of course the FSM:

The CV still has the clamp attached but it compressed the boot and is sitting off its shaft. I need to figure out how to get the clamp off to get a new clamp on it. I tryed to get it off with pliers last night and it did not work.

You will be fine with it. At first you made it sound like the boot had slid down off of the joing. My one CV has had a cracked boot for about 1.5 years and 40,000 miles now.

I also stopped by Toyota and they are going to try in get it covered under my extended warranty. It go's in to Darrell (BlownTaco I think) on friday. but for now I am going to get it all patched up. I can see on my drive way where it started leaking at and see the trail of grease from where I pull out of the drive way last night to turn the truck around to work on it. I will post some pic's up later of the CV and the repair.

Well not for sure they are going to see if the extended warranty will cover it since I am out of the factory warranty. But its all patched up for the time being. Will get picks of the carnage up later.

So just got back from the dealer. My extended warranty would not cover it because the seal failed. So and one up for a HOW some time soon? I need help rebooting my truck. The way the dealership was going to fix was a new axle which if I had them do was going to cost me my truck payment and then some. Other wise I would have had them Darrel throw it on.

did they include the one little clip that's all you need to fix your current problem?

Rember you need the inner and the outer. The inner boot must be removed to get to the outer.

Its the hole kit. After playing in the snow I rather just clean it and reboot it then just put a new clip on it.

Yup, after awhile Mike started calling around. Only place that sells them is Toyota @ $440 + tax......ouch.

I'm sure Mike will chime in at some point, but when i left it was gtg. Hope it stays that way cause boy what a process. Really glad i was able to sit in and help with the actual removel and install of the axle, really isn't as complicated as i thought it was. The boot on the other hand......lol

I learned a valuable lesson today: Never even consider a boot swap of any type in the future

Yea next time I am paying the $440. Screw that crap. Well after you and Dot left I ran down to the store a picked up some Diff fluid and changed it out of my front diff. I am so tired and if any one ever says they are going to do a reboot I will do my best to talk them out of it.

For you 05+ taco guys TOP has the front Axel Assy for $331.54. That is the cheapest I can find. You will have to wait for it to be shipped but I think its worth the $100 in savings. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...=1&catalogid=1
