This bolt dropped out of my engine compartment last night. I could hear it rattling near the pulleys when it was on. Looked around with a flashlight couldn't find anything. Any ideas? 2008 Tacoma 4.0
Looks like a beefy bolt, almost like a brake caliper bolt. I would say dig deeper into the truck and check the whole front end. You never know, bolts are sneaky. They could fly up and get tossed anywhere. Good luck bud!
I hope someone has seen this before and lets you know
UPDATE: Pulled the skid plates off today and found these two spacers and washers sitting in there. Im sure they are related because they fit around this bolt. I looked around for a while and could NOT find anything that looked out of place. Any mechanics on here that can help me out??
Did you look at the brackets that mount your pulleys and auxiliary components to the block? I put in a pulley-delete kit on my G35 Coupe which gets rid of an excess idler pulley and the kit came with a setup of washers, spacers and a big-a$$ bolt just like the stuff you have on your car. Basically the bolt went through my power steering pump bracket after I removed the stock bracket for the extra pulley, and the spacers take up the space where it used to go, so now the bolt just goes through the PS bracket and the spacers and into the block instead of going through the extra idler pulley bracket as well. You said it was rattling in the front near the pulleys... could be the same sort of thing on your truck, although I'm absolutely 100% unfamiliar with the 4.0 engine bay layout.
What might also help you is to go on Ebay and look at some 4.0 motors that are for sale and scour the pictures of some clean full motors that are out of the vehicle. Usually there are lots of good shots from different angles that you might be able to use to get an idea of where it may have come from in yours from spots that are hard to see while it's in the vehicle. Take note of some potential suspect bolts and go see if you can find them on your truck from underneath with the skidplates removed.
Thanks for the info. I figured out that the spacers and washers are unrelated. Still don't know where the bolt came from, but I've looked everything up and down and everything is in tact.
I don't know about your 2 gen's skid plate, but our stock 1st gen skidplates were two parts. Could that bolt have come out from where the two halves are bolted together?
I am just shooting that out there, and for all I know, I could be completely up a tree and your skid plate could be completely different than what I'm speculating.
