Snow Run 12-27

Came off Stoneman Lake Road with Jamie (JJackson) and a friend to try out some "easy" snow wheeling and promptly got stuck in 15" of snow. Decided to head south to get into the 5"-10" stuff and had a total blast. FUN FUN FUN, sliding around and just enjoying the experience! Basically did a clockwise loop around the Apache Maid Lookout.

Probably should have stayed on the flatter areas but went into some ravines and couldn't get out again. After sweat'n it a couple hours, *EDIT* we freed the Taco with little more than a busted side mirror and some larger than normal "pinstriping." We eventually found a road out.

That was a damn good time.

I was too busy shittin my britches to think about the camera. The prospect of leaving a Taco out there AND/OR spending the night out there had me preoccupied. Things were looking sketchy with about a couple hours of good light left.

Things were semi-comical at first, getting stuck a dozen times trying to climb that bastard hill, yanking and strapping (sometimes using 3 straps together)... if there was Marx Brothers music playing it would have made for a good show. But when the '06 slide off the road completely,* EDIT * the humor was gone.

* EDIT* we made a last ditch effort and somehow got the Taco spun around. Using the downhill momentum * EDIT * he managed to * EDIT * get back down to the trail. * EDIT* certain measures were necessary for victory!

We saw at least 200 head of elk ( and a few of them more than once ) on Saturday, had a great time. We all needed a little improvement on our ground distance estimation when using a map. Most of the time we stayed on top of 6-8" of snow.

GUYS, I'm glad everyone is safe and sound. PLEASE, take extra care when out wheeling and make EVERY effort possible to tread lightly. Please watch how things are worded and phrased when describing certain situations here on the board or in unknown mixed company. Remember, public lands are a VERY touchy subject and we need to take EVERY precaution possible on and off the trail to help keep them open for all to use. Thanks.

Thanks Stroke, he was exaggerating a bit, must be a good fisherman. We did tread lightly and did not wander off the designated trails/roads. I even picked up a few beer and soda cans left from the sledding crowd (parents set great examples) and from a few wheeling yahoos. The one truck did slide off the trail/road and was recovered with very little damage of area due to the deep snow and frozen ground it would not have a good area to be in if it was muddy.

Yeah Tred, then you head south at the "T" in the road, signs will take you there, but I think it would be getting soft down there after the recent temps.
