Sunflower Mine 1/28/08

Well, we might haev been better off in boats today. It fluctuated from hard rain to down right frickin pouring for most of the day up there. I was in need of wipers on teh the inside of my winshield as well. it's a long story but the top of my winshield was leaking pretty bad at times.

We met at Dennys at 9ish, we had 7 rigs and a great time. 6 TTORA members and a friend of mine in a FJ80. Sorry if i post someone wrong someone but it was BOVADS, Red Rocket, Themasta, Pretaco, TacoToy and Myself

The road in was a mudfest with no visibility at times when we were on top of teh ridges in the clouds, we took a couple of wrong turns along the way but thats how it goes sometimes, when i go back and it's sunny, i won't recognize hardly anything.

Here's a group photo when BOVADS was off exploring where we needed to go;

Not a whole lot of action shots as it was pouring and we pretty much kept moving and kept teh CB's busy.

Group pic at teh mine;

We left the mine and teh road out was a running wash, Pretaco was up front and lead us out wit no miss haps, some of teh others got pics of this spot hopefully they'll post em.

Once we got back to the highway it was stillpouring so we went south a couple of miles to hide in a tunnel and air up. Some got pics of this too.

3 of teh group went home, and BOVADS, Pretaco, TacoToy anfd myself went up to Payson to see if it might be snowing for flooding? Well teh first stop was for fuel and snacks then to where we cross teh river to get to my cabin, NOT today.

Normally the water is 5'± lower then the bridge;

running it the other way would have been cool up the steep rocky part.

I totally forgot TacoToy was widening the road...

This was a lot more fun than it looks. This is Symon623 acting like a salmon climbing in an uphill stream!

Here's the pics I took. I only got a couple of Thamasta and Symon going thru the wash after the mine.

I wonder who that was who almost rolled his truck down the mountain. He was lucky all those shrubs were there to hold up his truck so Tacoray could pull him out. To bad no one got a pic

Did you guys find the old mill/mine area with the yellow truck and all the equipment?? The wash section of trail just east of there is the best part of trail.

we didnt find much, we didnt find the yellow truck, visability was really low, i mean 100' in places, really low clouds all day. we went wrong way for sure, we went down most everything instead of up. but with the weather the way it was probably better that way. glad everybody showed , and had a good time

I was thinking about you guys today and that rain! Looks like fun.
This is the mine workings. They are up a hill almost a 180 to the left after a bit of a tippy section.

Did you pass a couple of mines on your left. Should have been almost able to reach out and touch one. The other would be about 5 fee away with a fence at the entrance (most ripped away fence)
Here is a pic of the one. I'm sure in the rain it would have been easy to miss! I bet your eyes were glued up stream for water!

you'da had a hell of a time in only 2 wheel drive Nate, doable but you'd tear teh road up, we did enough of that as it was, the mud was pretty deep in places.

Seems like you guys ran it backwards. Did you guys see the big mine towards the begining or the end? If the begining, you ran it backwards and the mill that was posted would have been kinda towards the end on your right. Normally the mill is towards the begining and on your left with the big mine towards the end of the trail before you head out.

If we would've taken FR 3722 from here, it would've taken us to Sunflower Mine. The creek we would've had to go thru may have denied us though.

So that mine entrance your parked in front of was near the beginning of the normal end?

It was near the end for us, we ran the loop in a counter clockwise direction.
