Welcome!

When my 3.0 goes, I can guarantee you another one is not going in. Look into 3.4L swap:

My first place to look would be junkyards, but my experience out there wasn't real good with finding Toyota stuff.

Next would be Craigslist.

The ideal candidate is something that was in a bad accident (roll, t-bone) - all you need is the engine, ECU, and maybe the tranny (depending on what you have now and what you want).

The 5 speed behind the 3.4L is pretty much interchangeable with the 5 speed behind the earlier 3.0L, so finding a manual tranny won't be too difficult. The automatics are different, so finding them is a little more troublesome (and since they're fully integrated into the ECU, you pretty much have to find an automatic donor vehicle and get the motor, tranny, and ECU all from the same truck).

The 3.4L swap is probably one of the easiest and most common, and ORS has everything well documented on exactly what you need to do, but it's not cheap! The other option would be a Chevy 4.3L, with stuff from Advance Adapters:

Welcome

theres alledgedly a junkyard somewhere around New Philadelphia (south of Canton) that specializes in Toyota parts, I think Jeebs01 http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/member.php?u=9438 might know about it, I think he bought some stuff there. You might send him a pm and see if he has any info about it

If it were me I would use a R151F 5 speed as well as it's matching t-case from a turbo'ed 4cyl truck with an r150 bellhousing from a 3vz truck........this combo will hook to the 3vz or 5vz but will give you a gear driven t-case as opposed to chain driven, a lower first gear and i believe a taller overdrive

5th gear is like .83 vs .82 - not enough to be significant.

1st gear though is 3.83 on a R150, 5.15 on R151 IIRC - BIG difference

the r151 is 4.3 first gear stock.......Marlin has an upgrade to 5.15.........still speaking from experience the 3.83 to 4.3 jump is very noticeable (I went from a w56 to the r151 in my 4runner) plus you will be gaing the gear driven case meaning you can add lower crawler gears to it if you want.

To me if you need to swap in something different anyhow the 151 is the only way to go.

Oh and if you use the r151 and decide you don't want to use a toyota engine it can be hooked to any 60 degree gm engine, some dodge engines (including the new Hemi's), some isuzu v-6 's and a few other engines all useing junkyard parts.....no special adapters required
