And now for the main reason I started this thread, To give any knowledge (or lack of) back to my fellow Inttora members.
I know that with most things that we are gonna add to our trucks, rust is gonna be a problem. And This is where I hope I can help! Now powder coat or rhino liner would be my first choice but since I can't afford that, this is what I've come up with.
First, start off with nice clean welds ( thanks dave ).
Next I knocked off any weld splatter and wire wheeled every weld. Then I wiped with a prep solvent to prepare for the caulk, yep caulk. I used an adhesive paintable bathroom caulk because I couldn't find what I usually use "sikaflex". That's good stuff, use it if you can find it. The caulk is to help shield the weld from the elements, and can make some ugly welds look purdy! It smooths out the highs and lows and fills any holes, all to allow for better paint coverage and protection.
Should look kinda like this
Make sure to sand off any rust or steel coating.
Then after drying I wiped it all down and sprayed the entire piece with a rust converter. Here's some of the stuff I used.
After that dried I gave it a good coat of a quality primer.
And that's as far as I got today.
