Rear end temp??

How hot should a rear end be? I just made a 300 mile road trip to sacramento to pick up my new Snugtop. I stoped and checked things out and felt the rear end. It was pretty hot. I have an Arb locker and 35's. Just courious? Should I use a diffrent gear oil mixture?

As long as its not burning your hand hot then its normal. After just 10 min of driving your diff is that hot.

After that long of a road trip yeah i can see it getting hot. But if its to hot to touch then u might want to pull the filler plug and stick your finger in there and make sure u have some oil in it. Of course wait for it to cool first.

Just to be safe change it out with fresh oil.

Autometer makes a rearend temp gauge. Sounds crazy but with normal driving i dont think you have nothing to worry about. Use some synthetic gear lube if your worried about it.

I drained my factory diff. oil and replaced it with Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil a couple of years ago. It SEEMS to run cooler by feeling of the diff. with my hand. Whether or not this is my imagination or not, I can't tell you but it makes me feel better anyway.

Mine used to run realy hot after long trips, but after I switched to a full synth (Amsoil 2000) it been running noticably cooler... plus the synth can deal with the heat better without breaking down.

OK, 98.6, uh yeah, but seriously does anyone have a temp for the rear differential after 30+ highway speed miles. (60mph+) Was pulling my drive shaft and found the diff to be hot. Not to hot to touch but uncomfortable to hold my hand on for any length of time.

Why not buy a thermometer and measure it?

If seen some Tacos that have been put through hell all their life and they held up. I dont think a warm rear is anything to worry about.
