If you have ever owned an ARB compressor to run your ARB locker you may be in the same boat as me and some of my friends. I would say all and all not a bad product but if you have $700 to $1400 worth of lockers in your truck and you are counting on a $200 compressor (cheap for a compressor) to run the whole system, seems like there is a better solution. I know of a few instances of compressors running and not making air, not running at all, and even melted wires. I will admit some of this may be due to lack of takencareament, and improper installation.
I am not saying I have the solution but this is what I came up with and it has performed flawlessly since installed. What I have is just a quick connect coming from the solenoid that can be hooked to any air source with female end of a quick disconnect. I started with a Power Tank and the ARB kit they sell, and this worked great. Then I realized that my std cab truck has no secure place to mount the tank and still be in the upright position. Therefore I could not carry air unless I was on the trail and no chance of using my locker for the occasional and spur of the moment local wheeling trip.
I used to scuba dive and had an old first stage regulator with two second stages hooked to it. I traded one second stage regulator for a small pony tank at my local scuba shop. The first stage drops pressure from 2500 psi to about 110 psi. I bought a $15 pressure reg. from Home Depot and a female quick connect, and dropped pressure to 80psi to the ARB solenoid. I have used this pony tank for about four months now and have barely made a dent in the amount of air it holds. Oh yeah and when I am on the trail I have the Power Tank to back it up. That’s why all the extra air line.
If anyone else has a good solution to the ARB compressor lets see it!
