Cougar Buttes - Feb. 18, 2017

TTORA SoCal

in

Cougar Buttes

Just northeast of Big Bear is Johnson Valley. Here you'll find all sorts of areas to drive your 4wd rig through. It's home to King of the Hammers. TTORA SoCal will be visiting Cougar Buttes. Composed of many trials, we'll be tackling a few!

The Difficult Run
Bullfrog will be the main attraction with bits of Cakewalk mixed in and down Box Canyon. Depending on how quick the day goes, we may visit another!

Minimum requirements: 4wd, 32" tires, a mild lift, sliders.
Recommended: a locker, aftermarket skids.

The Hard Run
Hammerdown is a short but very technical trail. Both your driving skills and your truck's capabilities will be put to the test. Body damage is a threat but can be avoided.

Minimum requirements: 4wd, 35" tires, one locker, sliders, aftermarket skids.
Recommended: locked f/r, solid front axle

*currently, we don't have a trail leader for a hard run*

Please be prepared! Here's a brief checklist of items you should bring with you anytime you take your rig offroad:

Trail Preparedness Checklist

This is BLM land so there are few regulations. Obey all signs, protect wildlife and plantlife including the federally protected desert tortoise, and always pack out what you pack in.

Possession of glass beverage containers is prohibited.

Meet Point:
N3429'02.6"
W11649'09.3"

Coming off the 15, exit Bear Valley and head east. Bear Valley ends at the 18. Turn right. Stay straight on the 18 as it turns into the 247(Old Woman Springs Rd.). At Camp Rock Rd., turn left. Follow the coordinates the rest of the way in. A bunch of trails weave in and out of each other but just head in the general direction and you'll get there. You'll be looking at the first obstacle, Chicken Rock.

Meet Time: 10am
CB: CH28

Bring lunch!

Sign up for an awesome adventure! I'm still getting the cruiser ready so, unfortunately, I won't be there. I just had to post a pic of the ol' Tacoma as a farewell.

And here I was thinking you posted this pic because I was in it.....

By the way, six days ago was my exact half way point of this European adventure, it's all downhill from here.

Oh, and for those who have not run Cougar Buttes before, it's awesome. Something for everyone. Mind those tail lights.

I never know if difficult is harder than hard or if hard is more difficult than difficult.
So, what should I do...?

The Difficult Run was pretty difficult last time I went....

Think 4-5 of us got high centered. :/ and 3 of us lost a tail light.. One a little more than the others.

No. Look's like I'm out for this trip. I ordered some aftermarket links from Texas but they haven't even shipped.

When in doubt, throttle out!

We don't have a trail leader for Hammerdown. So, there there's only one run to sign up for. Leon did it and walked away with both tail lights busted. Have fun!

Weld and sleeve the thing. When you get a new one you will have a trail spare

New links came in last night and are now installed. Now I need to readjust the tie rods to track straight.

50/50 chance of making it.

Didn't you mix up the event dates once before?

No. I'm not that stupid. Well ... maybe I did. But this is the first time I actually showed up on the wrong day. It worked out. I practiced self spotting for a while then hooked up with a couple other Toyotas.

It's looking like I can probably make it after all, but I've been watching some videos of Bullfrog and Cakewalk, and they look pretty challenging. Are there multiple lines or easy ways around some of the more difficult sections?
