Calico - April 1/2, 2017

CALICO

Our annual Calico event is coming up on April 1st & 2nd, 2017. We will have people camping out starting Friday night through Sunday. Most of the runs will be on Saturday with optional run(s) on Sunday as well.

Calico was a booming silver mining town in the 1880's. In it's heyday, it had over 500 operating mines. The decreasing value of silver led to it's demise by the turn of the century. Most of the trails/roads we use for our runs were established routes for accessing the mines and removing the ore. Many mines are still accessible but please use caution.

Vehicle minimum requirements for the hard runs (Doran and Odessa):
33" tires
one locker
sliders
spare

Vehicle minimum requirements for the easy run (Philips Loop, Mule Canyon, Wall Street Overlook, Early Man Site):
31" tires
sliders
spare

Run schedule (subject to change based on vehicle count) follows-

Run #1 - Doran / Saturday 9am
Run #2 - Odessa / Saturday 9am
Run #3 - Phillips & Wallstreet / Saturday 9am
Run #4 - Doran and/or Odessa (loop?) / Sunday 10am

For those of you who haven't been before check out some pics from the previous years.

The main group camping spot will be the same as last year. Pawn found a nice spot on Phillips Loop Road just off to the left of Mule Canyon Road. (about 1mi from pavement - Ghost Town Road) The camping location is on BLM land, so no camping permits or fees are required. This is dry camping with no facilities (5mi drive to town), so bring what you need. Pack it in, pack it out!

Calico is here!

I'm very excited for this run! I'll finally have the cruiser put together. Hopefully Mayra and Kennedy can join me but they're still on the fence. It'll be great to see everyone again after missing all of the runs so far this year. Come on out!

I'm in. I might show up Friday night. Not sure yet. I'll definitely stay for Saturday night.

Already got 6 40oz bottles ready to go.

Also, bring your guns. We'll setup a shooting gallery on Saturday afternoon for those that want to shoot some guns.

Was it easier to fix than you expected? Or did you take ShowStop's advice?

I was about to let you know I have a passenger seat available. Mayra and Kennedy are skipping this one.

I think I figured out one of the problems from last year. The cold bottles don't work well.

Easier, no, installing the leaf springs was actually a little more difficult than I thought, but not by much. I still need to change my tie rod, drag link, panhard bar and rod ends, but I that's not going to be an issue.

I had a little scare concerning my shocks. I should be back on track now. I ended up having to order from 3 different vendors to make it happen. Extended the breathers today but still need to bleed the brakes and do an alignment. I have the day off on the Friday before just to make sure everything is set. Got the tires mounted up today, too. Things are starting to look sexy!

I still like the wider mouth bottles for bombs

Do I hear a side business in the works? I sell you spools and you finish them and make them all pretty to sell to the SF yuppies?

hmm, off-season project....
you get these on a regular basis?

now I'll have to go into the damn stores and see how the bases are made

sometimes you see the whole spool cleaned up and finished with clear epoxy, sometimes one flat and the original center, sometimes just the flat with new base. will have to do some research.

We go through tons of spools. Here is what is sitting outside right now-

That is after I just killed 20 of them for firewood.

This is one of the better looking spools we get-

For scale, it is about 30" x 30".

Damn it Janet. And I got up early this morning. Actually, we're going to San Francisco for a few days to celebrate our 23rd. Too bad I can't strap a couple of those spools on my Camry to pay for my trip.

But thanks for thinking about me and we'll see you NEXT weekend.

I have my passenger seat open if your truck isn't ready by the weekend.

I'm still putting the cruiser together bit by bit. I have Friday off, too. So if all goes well, I might be at camp late that night.
