Upper Coyote/Sawmill - May 6th, 2017

SoCal TTORA

at

Upper Coyote & Sawmill

This area is dense with history from the Cahuilla Indians to the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition to Bailey Cabin. It's also fun to explore with your 4WD vehicle. Upper Coyote Canyon is lightly traveled but offers stunning views and a challenging terrain. You'll go through rocks, sand and sometimes water while navigating the trail to Bailey Cabin. Another track requires skill and a spotter. Don't travel this path with more than 3 vehicles, though. There aren't many suitable "turn-arounds" to accommodate your group. Sawmill Trail and Santa Rosa Trail once connected many moons ago. They've since been separated to protect certain areas for regrowth. The trails are mild to moderate depending on your approach.

This Run is open to all off-road vehicles. 2WD vehicles are required to have a locker to traverse loose, steep terrain. A mild lift and larger tires are recommended but not required. Chance for body damage is little to none.

Meet Point:
The intersection of Terwilliger Rd. and Coyote Canyon Rd.

Meet Time:
10am

Finally bought a new rig after being out of the game for a while. Live in Rancho Penasquitos and possibly interested in making this ride.

Know a place to leave my truck and trailer near the meet up?

This really isn't an ideal trip to trailer your rig. There are two, possibly three, different trails we'll be running with a 30 minute drive in between the first two. Also, if the reason you're trailering your rig is because it isn't street legal, you need to know that only highway legal vehicles are allowed into Upper Coyote Canyon. The meet area is around ranch houses on dirt roads. The roads are wide enough to accommodate your set up.

I also have a couple friends who are interested in joining us. One has an 80 series LC and the other a 40 series.

What time you think the run will be over? I may need to be back to OC by 530.

It's been a while since I've been on a run. Now that ski season is over, it's time to start my summer activities. I'll see you there.

My Cherokee is street legal and registered but it is spooled in the rear and the times I don't trailer is the times I break down so I always trailer now.

I'll google search to try and find a wal mart near by or somewhere to leave my truck and trailer I guess.

You may want to leave after Upper Coyote. When Garry and I ran these trails a couple weeks ago, we started wheeling around 9 and didn't finish until around 5. But that also included a couple lengthy u-turns and exploring a branch off of Upper Coyote that we won't be doing.

We missed you at Calico, buddy. Glad you're going to make this one.

I have a friend in a 4Runner that has a welded rear diff. So, I know what you mean. You could park your trailer in Anza and then just drive back to it from Sawmill. Sawmill is off HWY 74. I'm glad you'll be able to join us.
