About to buy an 06 Tundra

It's $20000

SR5 (power rear window), 4wd 4.7l V8, factory towing package with trannie cooler.

White with matching tanneau cover.

66k on the clock.

I'm going to take it home and give it a good once over before I make the leap BUT is there anything I need to watch out for??

Is it a good deal also? (I'm thinking it is)

Wow.... I personally think that is a lot for a 06... Just saying. But coolant leaks on the head gaskets... funny shifting tranny... Loose steering rack. That is about it. Great trucks.

Tranny is excellent, rack is solid, don't see any coolant leaks. Are they prone for head gasket failure with only 66k on the odometer?

KBB was around 24k for the truck as it sits. Looks brand new inside and out. I'd think it had 0 miles on it if I didn't see the odometer.

as a former tech (a few years)

the '05s and '06s were really solid friggen trucks.. they're NEVER in the shops

a premature water-pump here and there (mine included)

idler pully here and there


no real head-gasket issues that I ever knew of

OHHH check for steering wheel rattle/play when u go over washboard surfaces. if you feel a Knock in the wheel (and you'll KNOW it) its a headache, dont bother with i if you don't work at the shop the upper shaft is loose cuz its not splined

..i'm tellin you man, you'll KNOW it, if you feel it, it will feel like a loose ratchet clinking back and forth

CHaseTundra and I were plagued by this... i was finally able to fix mine - got a new shaft and welded the upper shaft slip joint together NO MORE PLAY


but i digress...


that IS a liiiittle steep, but i gueeesss its fair

So I bought the truck. This truck won't see much offroad so I'm just wanting to level it out and put some slightly larger tires on it. I'm guessing the best way to level the truck is with some Bilstein 5100 adjustables??

Anyone know what size tire is the cutoff on my 17" wheel for the stock suspension before rubbing occurs?

the answer to your question, with the 5100's @ the top setting is a 285/70 17 (might need spacers if you're gonna use the factory wheels)

unichip definitely gives you more balls on the highway,

and more "snap" off the line..


i never had it dyno'd but i can tell the difference when i have the chip on Map A vs Map B

(i ordered mine set up for a CAI, and Cat-back exhaust)


i think the chip may have helped a LITTLE, but i'm ON the gas a lot more, so it cancels out haha

im averaging like 10.75 mpg

Congrats on your new purchase, Quattro. I am a little late to the party, but IMHO, our Gen1s look much better without the OEM flares that most Tundras came with. I took the chrome trim off my fenders and could not believe how much removing them cleaned up the look on my truck.

Very pretty, nice choice!

How much did you end up paying? Not that the 5100's on the 1st perch ride "bad" but I'd sure recommend leaving your stock stuff on there; especially with so little mileage. The slight rake looks good and she looks just fine with a touch 'o weight in the back.

Also that tire upsize won't do your mileage any favors.

This is an old photo of my truck after I put my stock tacoma wheels on them. I wanted to see if 265 75 16 MTs would fit with no lift. (They fit nicely)

Glad you kept the tacoma. i just purchased an 06 double cab tundra and so far am loving it. Not a 4x4 but thats what the tacoma is for. No way I could separate myself from it.

I have to get use to peeking in the tundra section now cause I am so use to skipping over it.
