Wahoo! Thanks to everyone for your donations that made this all happen. Within the next few weeks we should be live with the new hosting provider and (duh) the new hardware pictured above.

I signed the colo agreement this morning.

Well, they look exactly the same, so no sense taking the other one out of the box. Bob already has the third server from Ironport, so all together there will be three servers working for us.

Well, you're right. A few years ago it woulda been bling, now it's just another server.

Our data center charges by rack space, so you have to fit a lot of crap in a really small space. It's a 1U server, meaning it's 1 3/4" tall. We'll have 3 servers in a rack over there, and will be taking up only 5 1/4" of space.

I'm sure Bob will correct me if I'm wrong...

Web Server: P4 3.0/2G RAM/Mirrored SATA 250G Drives
DB Server: P4 3.0/2G RAM/Mirrored SATA 74G 10K RPM Drives
Mail Server: Ironport C10 http://www.ironport.com/products/ironport_c10.html

InReach has decent bandwidth to multiple backbones. Everyone should notice a speed increase and less downtime once this stuff is all in place.

Thanks to everyone who donated!

Bob is all about FreeBSD. He's done a really great job with www.norcalttora.com, so no reason to do anything different with the new stuff.

Remember when you could only fit a few servers in a rack? Now you can stack an incredible amount of power into the same space.

Congrats on the new hardware!

Congrats on the new hardware!

I was in the McI Ashburn Colo last week. I saw 15 cages full of 1U Dell servers. Kind of cool.

That is a sight to see In that lab we have 104 racks, not counting the switch racks, all filled with various stacks of servers Then there's the benches... It's a great place to hang out in the summer time because it has the best air conditioning in the building It's a bit noisy, but it's good and cool.

Just curious here. I'm coming from the Windows side of things so don't bash me.

Do the web servers really require 2GB of RAM? Couldn't you take out 1GB from the www serves and throw them into the SQL servers, assuming the stick count works.

SQL is a hog compared to www, at least in the Windows world. Used to until I got laid off work on the admin department for an Internet based company. Admined two colos, 100+ web servers and the rest of the mayhem that comes with it.

New servers look great!
