Deck Plate Mod???

i have been hearing about this deck plate mod that everyone is doing...i was wondering what it does for your truck and how much it cost to do?... thanks

Just did it a week and a half ago. I installed a 6" deckplate and it works great. A small improvement in performance, not much, but definitely a nice sound change from under the hood. The only performance difference I can overtly notice is midrange acceleration. It cost me a total of 18 bucks, which was just the cost of the deckplate itself with tax (CA tax blows, man). I didn't seal my mod, as I don't go to heavy mudbogs or drive through waist-deep water. I did put the K & N drop in filter into the box, but saw no real change over a clean stock filter, so you don't have to spend the money for that.

I did the same with a TRD Filter. I still dont notice any HP gains. I am looking to get a new stock ait box and install it before I take it back to the dealer for any kind of service. I dont know about the dealer you go to, but where I go, they will voind your warranty for even installing driving lights on your truck. Or at least they tried to void it.

they can't do it, unless they can PROVE that the mod caused the problem. Also, toyota's warranty allows changes to the intake up to the throttle body. I agree, it's much easier to just have a stock box and swap it for a service visit, but if they were to tell you something like that, they're out of line.

Do you have to screw the lid back on everytime it rains and ur just driving on highway? Or just when going through mud and such?

What about filtration? does it allow mor particles to enter the engine since its a big hole? I have a K&N drop in filter and i can notice some difference, but not much.

I just made this mod to my truck today. It took about an hour and only cost me 10 bucks! It makes an awesome sound, but cant really notice that much change in acceleration. I only put a 4" deck plate on though. I also put a screen across the hole then put the plate down, strecthing the screen tight across the opening. Im not sure if it really does anything but makes me feel a bit more comfertable about having a big "hole" in my air box. I only have a 4 cyl.. and the box was not that hard to seal. Just put enough adhesive in the gaps and you are good. Other than that, just place a small bead around it... Its def a cheap mod but sounds good... any other cheap performance mods??

No. It's fine in the rain and even wet offroad. The only reason you need to put the cover back on is for mud bogging, stream crossings and deep puddle jumping.

The "big hole" is before the filter. As a result, your filtration is the same as it would be without the deckplate. The change is that the air no longer has to go through the twists and turns of the stock intake, it's a straight shot.

However, hold that K&N up to a bright light and look at all the holes that go right through it. As a result, I don't recommend the gauze and oil filter with OR without the deckplate mod. Either the stock filter or a foam filter will clean the air better.

I ran the stock paper filter, the K&N drop in, the TRD drop in and now an Amsoil foam filter.

Well, I didn't have any complaints with the stock filter, but I HAD to experiment

The K&N allowed the inside of my intake to get coated with a thin layer of a very fine, talcum powder like dust during the summer of wheeling when I had it in.

I cleaned the intake out and tried the TRD, with the same result.

Once again I scrubbed out the intake and so far I am happy with the Amsoil. I over oiled it and fouled out the MAF the first time, but once I learned to oil it properly, then pat it down between two towels, it's worked fine ever since. In two years of running it, my intake is dust free.

And, to answer the question that always gets asked; yes, both the K&N and TRD were properly oiled and installed.

Based upon my experience, I will run either stock filters or Amsoil foam filters in all my rigs.

Thanks. I just pulled out a TRD for the same reason. I'm back to stock and feel the difference. I may just try an Amsoil.

The TRD air filter is made by K&N I think. That's why you got the same results.

If you are crossing higw water areas, what diffrence does it make if water enters
through the fender well or the deckplate in the air box? Unless you have a snorkel
the water will still enter the intake, wouldn"t it. All I know for sure is if you do suck your engine full of water do not try to start it untill all the plugs are pulled and the water is pushed out of the engine. If you try to start while cylinders are filled with water, thats when major damage happens.

It depends upon what you mean by "high water". Your "high water" might be a small puddle to me

Having the intake in the fender has the advantage of it being "somewhat" protected from splashes. When the deckplate is open, it's unprotected especially from frontal splashes.

The last time I was in high water, It came in over the door windows. Is that high enough to qualify.

In water that high, having the deckplate in might be the least of your worries, but it's probably a good bet anyway.

so this mod is just an unscrewable hole? i guess i know what im doing this weekend. I just dropped a K&N, should i take it out and return it?

It is a big hole in your airbox that you can close. It increases airflow into your engine for more power etc. If you'd like to see actual results of cutting the hole go to gadgets website www.gadgetonline.com he has actual dyno result from cutting the big hole. I don't believe he has a deckplate, just a hole, cause he doesn't take his runner off-road.

AmSoil airfilter is better. Either that or the stock paper. K&N lets in dirt.

if you can find a buddy with a rotozip or dremel that has the circle cutting attachment, you'll have a real clean setup. I did mine by freehand with the rotozip and it's not exactly perfectly round, but it works just fine. I did my buddy's with my rotozip and circle attachment (forgot I had the attachment! d'oh!), and it came out top notch. be sure to vacuum out all the shavings.

well I'm experimenting, I dont have a dyno its all seat of your pants testing, I had my old air box from my other Taco as a guinnea pig, I took it and cut 2 1.5" holes in the front of it and 3 2" holes on the side across from the "fender tube"(?) and then took some screen and glued that over the holes on the inside. the way that air box is designed it looks like it would have to take on alot of water before it would hit the actual intake tube so I'm not too worried about water but I'm going to see if I pick up any water or junk in the lower portions of the box.
My other idea would be to try to find a K&N cone filter and strap it on the "fender tube" inside the box and then take out the stock filter, this way the air is still being filtered, I just have to fill in the all the holes on the air box I seen two small one last night when I was cutting up the old one
I just ordered a K&N drop in and should get it later this week, I'll keep you updated

installed the new box last night and took it out, there is a different sound for sure when you get on the gas its more raspy as far as any real performance, I started off with a fresh filter from the donor box so its hard to tell how much is from the holes and how much is from the fresh filter, I'm guessing the filter is more of it than the holes

I took the elbow off that leads into the fender and dropped a K&N in it and big difference nice sucking sound, similar to a aftermarket intake but not quite as loud, I'm guessing because its made of rubber and plastic not an aluminum tube

I've been very happy with my eBay ricer intake. I still feel that the restrictions in the Tacoma intake are not in the box, but in the intake tube (with the two silencers/resonators). I would have just done the Airraid MIT, but it was $30 more than my eBay intake. If I end up back in CA and have to smog every 2 years, then I will probably do the MIT instead of having to swap the stock air box back in.
