Largest tire for stock 15x6 wheels

Hey guys, this is my first post, recently found the site. I would appreciate any help you guys can give, seems like a knowledgeable crew out there.

I'm running the stock 15x6 wheels on my Tacoma 4x4. I need to replace my current tires (little Dunlop Grandtrek P225/75R15s) and would like to put the largest tire I can fit on these wheels without any tire rub. I'm looking at the 30x9.50 BFT ATs, will any rubbing occur with this wheel/tire combo? If so, how large of a tire will work?

you should have no prob's im running 31x10.5x15 on stock wheels and no rubbing, and I had the same tire set up (little Dunlop Grandtrek P225/75R15s)

Can you run a 33" tire on a stock 1996 rims ? it is a 4x4 truck.

They do make skinny 33 tires - like 33x9.5 or 33x10.5 (maybe)

fitting tires won't be your biggest problem, running taller tires w/o regearing will. the truck can take a 31" tire but you are geared for 28s so expect a big drop in power.

what engine? are you sure they are 6" and not 7"?

If you need to regear check the classified section here, and get a set of used 4:10's or better yet find a complete third and front diff with 4:10's already installed then you won't have to pay for setup and the install kits,

not if he has the 2.7. 4.10s with that engine were for the 235 size tire, not 31s.

hytenor, I've got the 2.7L ('96) and I thought the wheels were 15x6, but I'm second guessing myself now. I haven't looked at the back of a wheel yet, I just looked at the tag on the inside of my door and it read 15x6JJ (I think?). Did they even put a 6" stock wheel on 4x4 Tacomas or were they 7"?

Also, if my truck is geared for 235s (~29") and I put on 30s (~29.5") should I expect much of a drop in power? I know I can expect some drop compared to my current 225/75s, just hope it's not too much!

I think most came with 7s but they also came with 6" steelies; just check the back of the rim for the #. Mine are stamped on the front as well but I have alloys. the 30s shoud be fine. you'll notice some drop in power but probably not enough to worry about. Just don't try towing 4,000# trailers up steep grades during the summer If your truck came stock with the 235s you should have either 4.10 or 3.91 gears.

throw the 30s on and enjoy

Mine cam with the P265's which are nearly identical to 31's and 4:10 gears, I would have thought that the smaller tired trucks would not have needed that steep of gearing

which 32s? I assume you have a 2.7; do you know what gears you have?
There have been several members who have gone with 265x75/16s w/o lifting and survive just fine...they get used to the rubbing If you have 15" rims and go to 32x11.50s you'll have problems, however since that is a wider tire then the 265/75. The pinchweld mod may take care of the front; I'm not sure what you'll need in the back.

Who has 32x11.50s w/o a lift?? chime in!

my '00 came with 4.30s and 265/75/15s. It would seem that toyota finally figured out the proper gearing for what tires in '00. My door plate says 235s but the window sticker has 265s. It seems that in the earlier years they started shipping trucks with 265s/31s before changing to the lower ratios (4.30 for the manual and 4.56 for the AT). Why? who knows...to make them all look the same on the lot?

before the 235s the 2.7s wound up mainly with 225s and even 205s and 3.58 gears...pretty sucky. I noticed that some early v6 4x4s wound up with 225 or 205s and 3.15 gears, yuck!

How reliable is that sticker? It says that I am an B02A which is a 2 pinion, open 7.5" ring gear.

My old ’94 sticker was wrong… It said that I had 225/75R15 with 4:10 gears, well I ran it through the dealer’s computer and I had the 31x10.50R15 with 4:56 gear option.

Now: '06 Extended Cab: 4x4, 4.0L, 5 speed... Mods coming.
My old '98 Extended Cab : 4x4, 2.7L, 5 speed... with 33x10.50 BFG MT, OME 881, OME 15a/b, OME shocks, 4.56 gears, IPF 986 and LCE Header.

Ok that's probably the case with my truck, the door plate lists P235's and it's never felt like it had a lot of power

well, the 4x4 and prerunners have 8" rearends, not 7.5s
If your truck came stock with 225s and the 2.7 you should have 3.58 gears. (which coincides with the B02 code, forget the 'A').
If it came stock with 31s and the AT 2.7 you may have 4.56s, but only with the AT and your BO code should be 4.
