Thought i would get the pictarz rollin for the interwebz
The story in a nut shell....
Lexi was my first ever car/truck i have sold her and got her back 3times so this time im keeping her around for good(or for a long time) Anyways i have gone about the wheeling thing totaly bass ackwards and need to get it under control.
I lifted her and was more worried about making her big before anything else so heres what we learned. Armor, gears and lockers first. Lift and bigger tires come later.
I wheeled her 2 years now no armor no gears and a rear locker so needless to say shes been beat up pretty bad, Dont get me wrong its super hot and i love my girls like that but there is a time when she needs to look like a lady. I think she may have been fooling around on me when she was sick for the 2 years she was living at my grandmas and got the funk. Add that with my Ivan Stuart wheeling style due to no gears and shes been in need of some rehab time.
The cure......
Some people have read and been great to say they can help out with the man power needed to do the operation so we booked the OR and got a doner with out the germ and doesnt look like she was beat in the face with a bag of nickles.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/4wheeling/carnage%20april6/Picture160.jpg
So Lets tour the OR and meet some of the other sick ladys...yes i got lexi in to an all girls hospital..no Mc dreamys tryin to give her the goods in this story.
I have yet really get to know the 2 ladys that will be sharing a room but they seem to be pretty nice girls, Oh and lookers too.*Shwing!*
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/05-01-08_0036.jpg
The doners bits were delivered on a stretcher with leafs to prevent any damage to the new body. The doctor said we should gut her and give her a full new body so prevent the spread of any of her funk.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/05-01-08_1721.jpg
Once off the stretcher we took the new parts to OR 1 where the new body was prepped for a full peel and a few moles to be removed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/05-02-08_0122.jpg
It was also done with her booty. Now normaly i like a bit of junk in the trunk but what i learned is JDM girls are not supposed to have a big flabby butt it just gets in the way of what they can do during the quality time.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/05-02-08_0125.jpg
Were going to be trimming some off the rear(longbed=7 foot she will be 6ft. like before)
Once all the old stuff was removed from the body we needed to do a few things to insure she would not be getting any more of the germ...last thing i need is for her to wind up with cancer again or something.
Any spot that is known for cancer was treated with chassis saver. The butt will get this before paint but after the butt reduction is done.
Something had spilled inside and removed a layer of skin so she was treated in a few parts of her chest area....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/Picture074-3.jpg
Cant be to careful when your talking about her face or the bewbies and from the chest up was done inside and out.

I spent some time setting up the OR with the nurses lastnight so today and tonights butt reduction will go smooth. I will be posting updates after each step of the Rehab program. With any luck next weekend I will be needing a few kind people to help me lift her up on to her feet again. If anyone would like to come visit Lexi and her new body they are welcome to. The OR is in Timnith just east of Fortcollins. Im up there at her side everyday in to the early morning
making sure that shes being treated well so the recovery will be short and painless.
Please call for visiting hours

i have to take some new pics. Lexi is recovering well. Everytime i go to take pics the girls in the shop are naked or i forget my camera. The butt reduction went great and just will need some touch up from stictching her back up. During the surgery they found some cancer in one of her hips so she will be going back in to have some patch work done on that hip.
Her upper body is good tho. All i can say is the chassis save stuff sands like spray paint! Its junk for a surface your sanding to paint.
I hear nate will be paying a visit this week and i hope to have the make up done from the waste up this week and finishing up the butt this weekend.
Shes got some new goodies when shes back on her feet.
All new chrome front grill,lights
Keeping the H4 housing headlights and adding HID low/highs
the Bed section for the canback sleeper is at the shop now and a buddy who does wood working is coming by to plan out the trapt doors in the floor and storage compartments for tools, supplys and stuff then it gets dropped at Wilsons to be covered.
New carpet, heatercore, windshield, dash will be retrimed, rock doors and removable speaker pods with another set of MB Quarts.
No roll bar this time and im going with home built bumpers.

Im there everyday man just give me a ring...pm me if you need the number again.
So Chassis saver is junk. i was told to sand it with 400 before paint and this shit is coming off in sheets! going to media blast it all off i think.

Don't talk to me about sheets of rust... because I know all to well. Just remember the metallurgical properties are such that rust is an expanded piece of metal. (Meaning when I scraped off a piece 1/8 inch thick, in reality the original metal was maybe 1/16th). The rust "aerates and thickens" it.
Then again your wanting to get rid of the chassis saver right? Not rust.... The POR (Paint over Rust) we used on Ron seems to look great. (I'll have to paint over that but that is all on the underside and is not body paint...)
vwfastg60
05-26-2008, 06:45 PM
The rust is just in annoying spots. I found it in the bed and have been removing it as fast as im finding it. Its on the top of the wheel well in the passengers rear. Its bedfloor pretty much so im going to have someone fallow me up this week to cut up lexi's old bed for that patch pannel. The other spots are spots she had rust so i need to cut them out and give them to Wilson so he can brake them at work.
We did a test with the Chassis saver and the rust preventing spray paint i use on the frame and the chassis saver lost...what a waste of money. $50 a qt OR 2.35 a can. Coverage is good on the spray paint too.
I took a brake for a few days cause i just didnt want to burn out on the bed but tomorrow is back to work. I have to sand the radsupport and low in the bay, Clean and scotchbrite the underside of the cab then im going to paint the bottom of the cab and bay. after that block the cab, Seal it and shoot it.
We mocked up my new lighting system in the bay and its going to work perfect!!! I went with 6k high and low beam hid in my crystal clear hella headlights. I think i will be able to see now. I have a gallon unreduced Super white paint(Toyota color even) and clear. Im looking for some Toyota seats that will fit with the new interior but cant find any i like other then highlander seats and all i see is tan and impossible to find in a yard. We have been to 20+ yards in colorado now looking. I have one more guy to try that i spaced out this whole time. His brother said he has my front and rear axle and a few to pick from so we will see...lexi may have more surgerys lined up with little recovery time.

Harbor Freight sells walnut shells and glass beads.
Thanks I gotta sneak over there cause i had to drag Ballz out of there today or he would have spent everything he had. :)
Ready to spray except the mud and I just need to get with nate on that. I have to take a day or so away to set everything up. Ballz went nuts at harbor freight and got tranny jacks, stands, carts, chairs, more tools....Im moving my other tool box and stereo and fridge up to the shop tomorrow along with another compressor, gas bottles...Pretty much everything from my garage but the cleaning stuff cause ballz has his detailing cart. Kyles stuff goes up this weekend. All together we now have quiet the little operation going. The pain is going to be the hanging winch from the beams for the body swap. I figure it will make life easier then trying to lift it now it will just need a few to keep it from swinging as it comes off and the new one goes on. We will have to do a wrench day once were all settled in. We have press's a 40gallon and a 60(might be bigger) compressor, 5 fully fully stocked tool boxes, My little welder 5 jacks, stands, hoist, tranny jacks, and right now 3 work benches atleast 20 feet long.
With as much as we have got done the past few days i may get the underside of the cab,Bay shot this week but chances are sunday with all the set up we have going and car shuffling. Im going to put the motor in the 6 and throw a cover on it in the corner for now.

Time to update a bit.
So Lexi was allowed out of the hospital for some quality time alone in the woods. Took her up and did some camping ran 4 trails in one weekend and put a ton of miles on her. She did alright. I missed her so much! I have been stuck driving her on and off because the bimmer was wrecked and has been showing off how much of a bitch she can be with all her little nit picky BS.
Today i was posting up some stuff on Craigslist i need to get rid of and thought id see what toyota stuff i could get. If you guys remember the plan was can back but this was pretty cool and i couldnt pass it up.
Got it from a fellow CoTTora member(808yota or something 808)

I figured i could do a can back whenever but because im painting everything i might as well get this cause i plan on running it in the winter. I think it should be much warmer then the can back for the colder camping trips.
Heres the cab mock up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/06-22-08_1901.jpg
Im going to hunt out power doors cause this drivers side one was smashed while being stored on the side of my house. Plus the Reg is bad in it and thats a bunch of work to put in to something not that great from the start.
Also i have haded Bixenon to the hella housings and LOVE them. Because the front of the truck is all temp for now i have had a few grounding issues but other then that one of the coolest things on the truck.
Dont have tons of pics with them but im on the right.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/4wheeling/camping%20july18/Picture018.jpg
As soon as the bimmer is back on the road the truck will be hit hard. Got the topper, New carpet, Stereo, and will have new grill, lights, hood, fenders about a weeks time.

Thanks man, You will have to come by the shop and chill.
This is the best part about the topper....It fits in my garage!!!!!!!
Ok so its close, Really close and in the center it might rub a slight bit but it fits. This thing is WAY too big :(
I have been meaning to, shit just keeps coming up.

I hear ya. My car has the after wreck curse and i have to park it every few days and driv ethe truck cause something went wrong on the car. Now they are not going to pay on the wreck cause the cars 14years old and the clearly fresh damage could be old is what they said.
That sucks man, hope they cover it.
vwfastg60
09-13-2008, 08:03 AM
Because my newest part will require mods to the inner fenders im using the old cab to mock up and make the inner fenders closed in to keep dirt and stuff out. Because i dont want to cut and bang on new paint i wm going to do it on the gray cab and then just move it over to the new cab weld, seamseal or bolt....however i find best to close it off and prevent rust and keep it clean looking.
IFS GONE!!!!

So heres a few updated pics. SAS under way, Axle needs the ball gussets and steering stops welded on and some more grinding on the armor. Highsteer arms will go on when it all comes apart, Vented rotors, IFS calipers, gotta get some rock rings and backing plate delete rings and that will get painted up and finished. The frame is done on one side the other needs some brackets cut off still and ground down rear pinion angle to be set(after front axle goes on to make sure it will track straight) and adjustment of the shackle mounts and i think front hangers.
Old steering parts just to hold it in place.

I know the blocks are sketch thats why the truck is also braced to hoist. I need taller stands.

Axle on and set up. Shackles had not been put on yet

Rear spring hangers had to be moved 7inches forward and 2 and 3/4 back IIRC

After mock up it all has to come off.
so we started tearing it down. Here are some pics showing why the cab is being replaced because everyone thought i was crazy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture057-1.jpg
Barts impressed that this is going down and everything has fluids...no leaks and would run if wiring was there. The cab holds wiring, and linkage tho...

This explains a loss of response
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture062-1.jpg
ok so some grinding is required but will be easy now with nothing in the way.

Gotta fab a way for the ebrake tab to mount to...it goes here and ran through the old Tbar mounting

Madness's fab work in action on the new rear X member that replaces my old torn tire carrier mounting. The frame is SOOO stiff now compared to how it was.

Heres the one thing im going to be figuring out. I have 3 gas tanks...2 are 22re and one is 22r. The re tanks are from a 4runner and the other is from the 2wd. My truck being a longbed im worried im going to need to mod the 22r tank to fit the fuel pump. I know they sit higher and are bigger then the 2wd but i dont know how they differ in size for the mounting stuff.

Or just put a fuel cell in and get that crap out from under the truck where rocks are gonna beat it up.
Just remember that the capacity is ACTUALLY about 20% less than what is listed. Mine is a 15 gal, and I'm lucky to get 12 in it.

I Think the tank is cool where it is. I have the longbed so the tank is higher then normal trucks and runners. The tank is almost level with the frame and the skid only hangs down about an inch. I could move it up to flush it all but even after 3 years of wheeling the only damage to the skid was from my drive shaft rubbing a section that hung out.
The fuel cell is a good idea if i was going more full on crawler but this is still going to be a fully functional truck with a full size bed. Not that it will ever be used but it will be there. lol

Yeah, but you're going big now, and harder trails are in your future ... I would AT LEAST make the tank flush and have a heavy duty skidplate under it.

The skid will happen and flushing the skid is a great idea. I need to check bed measurements before i cut it up.
If you look in this pic you can see the skid,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture055.jpg
The amount it would save flushing the skid is minimal but the gas tank is a better safe then sorry situation. Maybe i can just pull the skid up a bit.
The truck will be wheeled but not super hard. Its going to see moab this summer and a few colorado trails mainly for camping and easier runs. There is a truggy project in the mix.

I have made this mistake countless times.
I've thought a lot of things would be fine. I spend money, then realize that, no, actually, they suck.
Once you've eliminated the weak link, the next weakest thing becomes the weak link.
You've gotten rid of the IFS, which gave you fits. You have the opportunity to fix a weakness, you should do it. Otherwise, you'll add more mods, then, get foiled on obstacles because you didn't fix the gas tank while you had the chance.
I'm exaggerating, but not that much. I've had MANY experiences EXACTLY like this.
Anyway, just my $.02.

Im going to look in to it but it may not happen. 1 because the body might get in the way and im not going any higher and im not cutting the bed up or taking up space in the bed with a fuel cell. 2 because at this point i have taken on a huge project and with what i still have on my plate and the time i want to be done in it just may not allow. This truck will be wheeled but more of the camping rig or light trail rig. Its more of a daily and a weekend wheeler then a full on crawler. We will have the truggy project in the shop as soon as mines finished up or at least once the truck looks like a truck again. Besides most of the guys i wheel with anymore are open/open and stock or mild lift and care about the body too much to risk damage.
When i was looking to drivetrain lift my 85 4runner the longbed brackets were one of the things that i was told to do. I dont plan on wheeling any harder then i did before and i think i will do much better with the gear/case work so i can get the lines i aim for now rather then bounce off and smack the body.

The truck will be wheeled but not super hard. Its going to see moab this summer and a few colorado trails mainly for camping and easier runs. There is a truggy project in the mix.
Good luck with that one. Having a fully capable rig and not wheeling it hard is gonna be hard to do even with a truggy project. I know I couldnt not wheel hard with a nice rig!

x2 - absolutely what I was thinking ... this is a lot of work to just build a camping rig - you're gonna be 'wheeling harder stuff with this rig! (or if you don't, I'm gonna give you a HUGE ration of crap for having an overbuilt rig)

I don't believe that. If you'd wanted that, you could have dropped tire size, kept the IFS, and made it pretty. Seems silly to drop all that coin to make it capable, then take it on fire roads.
You have a crawler now. Don't worry about the body so much, and take it out and drive it. I see Patriot and Indy in your future.
IMO, you should ditch the bed all together. Its just going to get wrinkled. Time to tube it, move everything up, and get it on the rocks.

Kirk, What are you talking about your truck having less then me? spooled rear in yours i have a locker but all that says is i spent more money and can turn mine off. You were EFI and SAF and i was carbed and ifs. You should easily be able to go more places then i did. The only thing was that for some reason as rigged as my truck always has felt it still held together to finish more runs with out trail wrench time:D You will NEVER live down the night at carnage where the shifter came out and 3 feet later dropped the front DS.
Its getting armor but not for a few months after the truck is rolling, I have the sliders and they will be on and my front bumper is being built but as for the rear and some monkey bars im going to hold off a few months just so i can recover some money...I have dumped 1000's on this thing and that vacume in my pocket is giving me a hicky..
I guess i could have explained this better...The rig will see a few harder trails but the reason im building this truck the way i am is not with the main focus of going out and pushing the limits every time.. It will be so i can pack the dog and some friends and go explore a bit. The truggy project is all about pushing the limits all the time. My truck is not getting rebuilt again and i dont ever plan on selling it because of what it is to me so im fixing the flaws its had and using it for everything i always have and with the new gear doing so in a safer, more comfortable way. Yes it will look good but i get tired of driving junk so i will drive it more now. I dont see indy but i do see moab and a bunch of new trails in its future.

Seamless upper truss. i smoothed out the rest of the welds a bit but not enough to hurt anything. All i can say is it took FOREVER!!!! I did it small sections at a time so i didnt screw up the housing letting it cool between welds.

And it looks pretty damn good... Although it was all done by Applewood Auto Body.
I talked to his painter friend (owner of the body shop) the first time I was selling my truck. The kid had just rolled it. They had a cab all ready to be swapped that they picked up for cheap. They were considering just getting another Yota truck, and ditching that one due to the cost of repair. So I showed him my truck... Looks like they ended up doing the cab swap...
It was just funny to find that. Haha...I saw this truck all crushed up, and he was bragging about how it had the Mustang 5.0 in it and all. Then low and behold here's another truck with the same setup that has a "fresh paint job".... :lmao:

Shock hoops are tacked up and same with the supports. After looking at how Scott did his and how the filter on his 4runner and my truck differ i figured this would be an easier way to brace it and still hit the filter from the fender well.

Wish I was making that kind of progress.. looking good.
About that hoop support tho. I've seen others putting one brace and bracing to the rear as well, I have been curios about that decision.
Why only brace one side (rear vs. front not driver vs. pass), and why brace it to the rear?
Being uneducated on this thought I'd ask. Is it because the shackle is in the rear and thus the axle moves backwards during compression and transmits the force that direction at the shock hoop? or is there some other factor?

No shit.. I talked to him a little about his plans. I don't know how he doesn't feel overwhelmed. I'm not doing near that, but feel like I'm rebuilding the whole damn thing.
I dont feel overwhelmed because i focus in steps. I have a list and an over all plan but for example...This week and weekend im finishing the shock hoops, sliders, grinding and frame cleaning. Then when Scott has some room I will take it over and have him move the steering box. A final test fit of the body after the mods have been made for the hoops and the steering box and i finalize the frame and suspension can get cranked down and i dont have to remove it again. Im going to bring it home and leave it in the garage while nate works his magic with the body and we can focus on the paint and bodywork. once that is done the motor and interior is all that's left and that stuff is easy. Motor maybe a week and interior about the same. Most of the interior work im just helping on because i cant stitch for the life of me. The pannels are going to be made by me and i will do the simple wrapping and install.
Motor stuff if its all painted and ready i can throw together in a few hours..
I think the shop space helps out alot with that.
Its more stress then when i worked at home. and after this project im just going to be storing the M6 and working slowly on it.
I think its the shop "Perks" that keep him from getting too stressed out. :D

I have to weld on the tabs for the lines on the high steer arms and paint those.(Color suggestions?)
Weld the tabs on the frame for the upper lines
Remount the Ebrake cable clip that was on the T-bar...I gotta find an IFS rig to take some measurements.
Sliders fell through and will be working on those tonight. Anyone in the area have a chop saw i could use to cut the plates and legs?

One question: How much front wheel spacing do you have? Is it just the standard amount? It seems like your rotors are farther out of the wheels than is usual.
Maybe I'm just imagining that though.

The rear-mount caliper sticking out sketches me too...but there's not always a good place to put it.
Sounds like additional tire width won't help, if you're running spacers to hit a certain track width.
Looks like they're only about an inch outside the tire tho, is that about right? Hard to tell from the photo.
Shock hoops look good. You planning to connect them through the engine bay?

I dont think the caliper will be an issue. Its up pretty high and on the back side of the axle. It sticks out about an inch maybe a little more but it wasnt an issue with the IFS. If it gets weird or drives funny i can always run the 1.5's and just take the rears off but then it will be narrow.....Im almost wishing i would have just gone full width.

Yes, good vision and comfort does wonders... The only thing that I don't like as much about miller is that you have to remember to turn it back on, if you were grinding for a little too long or something... That's always nice. You're focusing intently on a spot right before you weld it, and then after about 2 seconds, you realize that its not going to darken..

Nice or not it will see the trail. It may not see the crazy trails where body damage is going to be a must but it will get wheeled and as much as possible.
Im sure the bumper is strong. It looks and feels solid. Im bolting my bumper up and going to change the top mounting up and add another bolt in the optional hole. My stock ones are bent to hell so im going to hack em off and add some new stuff. Im cheating on the Xmember welding on the back side and flipping the frame over and just going to burn it on.

It's about time for an update....
Lexi has spent too much time in the hospital so Doctors have been working round the clock to make some progress.
First things first....Her heart, It has had one hell of a work out so the doctors got together and planned on modding the heart she had but a bigger better heart available so after all of us got together we made up our minds and the new heart was in order. Shes going to be getting a work out after the new look is finished if you know what i mean;) Might as well.....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture008.jpg
with the famework of her body the doctors had to remount everything to get the heart to stay put. They used 2/4 1/4'' on the stock mounting plates to make it all fit right.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture005.jpg
Lexi has lost a ton of weight in her recovery but the new heart and the body pieces that have been put on set her about the same weight as before.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture025-1.jpg
So at this point in her surgery i need to make up my mind on a few things. I know Nate's answer to this question but could use a few other opinions.
Lexi is getting the inner workings of her younger sister(00 tacoma dash) the A/C parts will be installed so i cant avoid the holes in the firewall for those and the heatercore but i can avoid the clutter of the wiring harness. Do i wire tuck the bay and put the tacoma fuseblock behind the dash where the airbag is or do i take all the brackets from the bay of the tacoma and move them to lexi and make her look oem fresh?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture018.jpg
A bunch of emissions crap goes behind the fuseblock that im going to try to work out of the swap all together.
you can see the emissions crap in the front corner of the bay here.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture020-1.jpg
If i wire tuck it this plug will wind up running through the firewall directly behind the motor and to the passenger side where the stock ecu mounts in the tacoma dash.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture012.jpg
Few more pics from the hospital

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v147/vwfastg60/87%20toyota/Picture024.jpg
I think that the 3rz takes up less room then the 22r/re/rte. I can see the top of the bell housing(could get to the top bolts np) before it was a paint to see or get to. Theres like 3-4 inches on both sides of the motor to the inner fenders and everything lines up perfect with my new mounts. Heater core lines are pretty close but will need to change some with the tacoma heatercore so it will be perfect.

I was talking about this with Wendy lastnight...Lexi may need a new name after its all back together.
The story behind the name...
I have a friend named lexi with a lazy eye...its not always lazy but you can see it from time to time. when i got the truck the first time the headlight was pointed down out. After all the front end damage the headlight would never get back to where it needed to be so i named it lexi after my lazy eyed friend. She knows thats why and hates it so much but is a good sport about it. The new cab will allow for the headlights to be aimed right so maybe a new name is in order.

Right now, get it running.
Get the motor done, wiring done, interior done, and drive it at least. We can do paint/body work after that.
once it runs/drives and you enjoy it for a few months, we can spend time doing wire tuck. Pick 1 thing a weekend and knock it out.

Nate as much fun as that sounds id rather build it once and do the other finishing touches later. Remember i have the bed to build in im sure little interior stuff to finish and little bugs to work out. Id rather not be taking it off the road and on the road anymore. It will be my daily for a few months so i can get some money saved up and get a new car. Im not sure what the maxima is going to do or how long it will last.
Id like to stick to the plan with putting it together.....Mock ups finished with the frame so finish grinding, painting and take it home. Finish the dash mock up and get the taco cab out of the shop for more room. paint the stuff and put it all on and put it together and be done working on cars for a while...I really am starting to hate it and need a brake after this project is done.

If you want to do it all in one wack, just wire tuck it id say.
The fuse block has to be moved to the passenger side anyway, so no matter how you look at it, wires have to be cut/extended, etc.
However, you could just mount it on the driver side, and extended the battery cables. Maybe just tuck the things that are easy to tuck, and leave the rest but clean up the wiring so its not as visible? My engine bay looked pretty clean except for a few wires with that 3rz in there.
Doing away with the emissions stuff will likely set off a CEL that will create bad A/F, bad gas mileage, and lack of power. There may be a way around that, however.

The fuse block will either be on the drivers side like the tacoma or under the dash if its wire tucked. the intake goes where the old battery tray way on the passenger side. if i put it in as it was in the taco i wont have to add to anything but the tail lights but if i wire tuck it and move the fuse block then i will need to add to the whole bay harness.
In all the 3rz swaps i have seen people do away with the emissions bs so im wondering how to do it with out the cel. I wonder if i can put the sensors in line with the lines they are on but just 86 the box.

It's definitely easier to leave it in the engine bay and find a way to protect it, than move it around.

Yeah, for POR15, you want a pretty rough surface - just take off any loose rust, don't grind it down to shiny metal. Do it right and that stuff really works though!

First, that assumes this truck ever sees a trail ... at this rate, I think that's a fair question!
Second - isn't that the point of a skidplate?

Thanks doug, I still have to paint the bottom of the cab, bay and inside of the cab and mock up the taco dash. After that the cab can go on. I will want some help to keep from scratching it up cause those towers and the motor make it a huge pain in the butt to work around.
After i get pinion angle set and shock tabs on im taking the frame home so i have more room to work on the cabs. The motor and trans will be mounted and at some point while its at my house im going to take it over to the muffler shop and have all the piping done.
Anyone know of a place that sells thick wall tubing that can be used from the downpipe back? Id like a thicker pipe to make it sound a bit deeper, plus it will hold up better to rust and rocks. I need 2.5 to match my borla mufflers.

Let me know. I'm a few weeks out but Clayton had thick wall piping on his 22r and some cheapo muffler and the thing sounded like a mini 3.4. Im not looking for it to be loud i just want a nice tone. Being a 4cylinder i dont want it raspy and high pitched so if its quiet and simi deep i will be happy. I have a 3 chamber borla stainless muffler and 2 borla resonators that are small and all of it is thin so it wont hang down.

I am going to tuck it up. It will run over the rear driveshaft rather then try to stuff it behind the motor and mess with the downpipe. The main reason for the thick wall tube is sound (as bad as that is) but the bonus will be a slight increase in strength. Even my stock stuff held up so im not too worried. Its all going to be tucked up as high as possible and mounted using the stock locations on the frame and eurosport chain hangers (same as rubber ones but have a chain inside) so they don't brake.

Check out his sheet work in this thread: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=803578
But he's also building a 'trecker' (http://toyotatrekker.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=trekkerbuilds&action=display&thread=33) with a custom dash and kept saying "I want this dash to "look" stock .. but have that ..... " hmmmmm seems to be something different here ? " ... same theme for the whole truck .."

I guess they would be more of a rosette weld to resemble the factory spot welds.
The shell was just kinda tweaked a bit. I didnt want to do the final cutting tell i have the heater box in and the column bolted up.
