: TC's nightmare/rustbucket A-ARM swap....

Man oh Man... who knew this would take over a week. And with the PITA that is was I wasn;t sure if this should have gone under "extreme mods" because honestly it felt like it was... LOL

We started Friday night May 9th... Basically his lower A-Arms were rusting through to the point of possible failure. What we DIDN'T know was that the bolts and rubber bushings that held the A-ARMS to the frame were seized. I kid you not it took us Friday night, and all day Saturday to drill them out. (4 bolts/bushings).

On top of that Troy's front locker was still having problems so while we were in there we dropped the front diff and took that apart.

AxleIke thinking this job is worth 1 Million Dollars.... (at least)

TowerRigger getting his sawzall on. I think we went through like 12 blades....
http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b8db34b3127cce98549815533400000087108AbNWLJszZOA

When the long end of the blade would get stripped Kyle would just snap it so we could use the shorter end... What a Bad Ass! :D
http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b8db34b3127cce9854981f533e00000087108AbNWLJszZOA

Then some grinder action....
http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b8db34b3127cce9854981d533c00000087108AbNWLJszZOA

Serious team effort.... We had to take turns at the sawzall as it vibrated our teeth out of our heads!
http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b8db34b3127cce98549819533800000087108AbNWLJszZOA

Ah! Success! We got one part of the passenger A-Arm off...
http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b8db34b3127cce98549807532600000087108AbNWLJszZOA

We celebrated with some MollyFood (tm)

Who knew such a small rusted pieces of A-Arm (x4) could be such a PITA?

Finally had to resort to the Plasma Cutter...

Finished getting the lower A-Arms out late Sunday!

Took a break Monday to weld some shackle mounts onto FJCruzer's rig.

So now we've got the new lower A-Arms in (and Ball Joints) I also scrubbed all the rust and we painted it with POR (2 coats) I got the Hubs back on, then troy got the CV's and Diff back in right before he left for Hungary (work).

Seriously it might have been easier to just do a SAS but After all the derusting and paint it looks great. This week I will de rust and paint the back end of his rig.

We couldn't have done it without the help of TowerRigger, MrWillie, FJCruizer and especially AxleIke!

:saw:

All the pics are here. http://cottora.shutterfly.com/action/pictures?a=67b0de21b340cba765a8
I don't have any pics of the new paint job - it looks great... but I'll try and get some this week!

Dude, that truck is back together and hopefully for a good long time. You don't want to volunteer for a de rusting job. De rusting would involve a new truck. Litterally.

Between rusted ass bolts, and snapping stuff off, it was the longest afternoon job I've ever seen.

Words of the wise. He speaks the truth too! It was THAT bad! We owe Isaac like MollyFood (tm) for life!!!

Isaac - I didn't know you were a tequila drinker, or we would have busted it out! Last year I traded a bottle of Hungarian wine from my trip there for a bottle of tequila from a colleague's trip to Mexico ... and it hasn't been opened yet!

Um.... I gave it to gerald for coming over and keeping me company and fixing some computer stuff. I mean we hadn't touched it! But we can buy Isaac the same stuff at DaveCo ;)

Isaac, and FJ Cruizer are coming over wed night. (6ish) You are welcome to join if you want. MollyFood (tm) will be provided of course.

Oh and a bonus, Isaac is gonna show us how to do an alignment. It's no shop alignment, but with the way we wheel, it's a hell of a lot cheaper and works great!

Let's get this rusty brat buttoned up! :saw:

I know you got to keep the crowd to a minimum, but if you can stand one more person to watch that alignment I'd be happy to park away from the house and hoof it over.

Actually you can park right on the street. We just can't have 15 trucks being worked on ;)

So come on over!! There's no law against a block party with an alignment thrown in... :neener:

Looks like AxleIke is gonna finally get his quick and dirty (but very useful) Alignment school up and running! :D

I would also like to stop by and see the alignment. Doug maybe we could carpool to keep the congestion down. I could meet you at your place.

Yuck. I've done that. It took forty five minutes for every single goddamn cut through the alignment cams, eight cuts total through a little over an inch diameter hardened steel. Dunno why Toyota doesn't lubricate those things at all...if you have a new truck, grease 'em now so you're not sitting under the truck with a sawzall later!

Sean if you can join us maybe you can help MrDoug with his welding issue?? Working on 2 trucks isn't a problem. It's the gaggle of trucks... :D

Oh, I'm no where near ready for the welding at this point.. I've identified what needs to be done, but haven't really drawn up plans or gathered materials, etc.

But thanks for thinking of me.

It's summer and I need the company. Our landlord doesn't care, and it's only 1 neighbor who bitches so it'll become obvious it's her problem. I mean jeeze last night at 9:00 someone was weed whacking like 4 houses down.... So what is the difference?

devinsixtyseven

She probably thinks you're depressing her property value what with all that real work, because helpless white collar middle class suburbanites don't actually do real work, they avoid it like the plague LOL.

So somebody need something welded or what? I wanna say hi to my welder :p. Post up, cuz I can still cruise up there.

*edit* BTW that means I'm looking for an excuse. I haven't welded anything in like four months now.

That makes at least two of us. I think you could start a racket going on this. I still need to adjust my shackle angles, and if y'all are working on a weekend I could drop by to lend a hand.

So, I took it to BigO to get the alignment checked today:

BEFORE:
Camber: -0.2* -0.3*
Caster: 3.8* 3.0*
Toe: 0.27in 0.23in
Cross camber: 0.1*
Cross caster: 0.8*
Total toe: 0.49in

AFTER:
Camber: -0.2* 0.1*
Caster: 3.6* 3.6*
Toe: 0.03in 0.01in
Cross camber: -0.3*
Cross caster: 0.0*
Total toe: 0.03in

Interestingly, the thrust angle is 0.42*, so I don't think the bent lower link is having much of an effect...

Willie

Not really, but the steering wheel is offcenter. Looking at the report again, it looks like they pulled up a Ford Taurus 2000-07 for the specs, so I'm taking it back and having them try again.

I took out my Camburg's to get them rebuilt and I have a the bolt that holds the shock to the lower a-arm siezed... still don't know how I am going to get it out.
