I'm cutting and pasting this from the colorado chapter so there might be some confusing one sided conversations sorry for the confusion just wanted to keep a record and share what I've learned and what mistakes I made so that you all wont have to go through it too.
So here we go. I bought a 86 4Runner on Friday (4/11/08) The engine had been machined and the crank ground, but not put together and installed. With the purchase came and extra transmission. A Turbo tranny to be exact. :xpimp: :woot:
So after the HOW on Saturday I loaded up the SUB and went to pick it up.
The 4Runner is in my Father-in-Laws back yard until I have the motor ready for install so I don't have any pics of it out of the garage I purchased it from but here are some pics to tide you over with.
The runner as purchased

The parts in the back of the SUB.
What have I gotten myself into?

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg253/KnAph0t0s/4Runner%20project/IMG_1385.jpg
After I picked up a little I started unloading things and getting an Idea of what parts I had and what needed to be done.
I don't know why anyone would paint an engine white but he did and it will change colors soon.

I have some surface rust but I took some fine steel wool to it.
The pistons have to be machined so I'll take them to the machine shop with the crank (not pictured) and have them matched up.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg253/KnAph0t0s/4Runner%20project/IMG_1393.jpg
That's all for today I have to find a machine shop that can get the Rods and crank ready before this weekend so I can get it together. I would like to put it in this weekend but we will see how that goes.
I'm contemplating getting a 85 front axle and doing the SAS before the motor goes in but I don't know if it's in the budget and wont know until I get the motor put together and ready to run.

The pic of all the shiat is my SUBURBAN the 4Runner is at the Inlaws in there back yard. I live in an apt complex and parking is a pain already with three cars and the complex really cracks down on non running vehicles (it's in an upper scale neighborhood kinda funny actually million dollar house neighborhood all down the street and a apt complex with college kids, divorced people, and people like us just married and starting out).
I'm gonna take all the engine parts to the machine shop and see what they want to do with it. I'm not an expert on machining things I just put them together.

Well I took the Engine parts down to Gunn Automotive (machine shop) today I hope that they will have them done by Thursday so that I can put the motor in on Sunday. Brian (TheFatKid) suggested them and they aren't too far from home.

Bummer!!!
I just got back from the machine shop and they said it would be around the 25th before I get my chit back. Most of the time is because they outsource their crank stuff and can't do anything about it. I tried to slip him a 50 but it didn't work.
They also said that the PO had just done a hone on the cylinder bores and that, even though it will run well and be reliable, they would suggest I bore the cylinders. I had an extra set of pistons that were .020 over and they said that they could use those. But that means I have to buy piston rings.
SO All my motor money is spent and this thing is screeching to a halt until I get the motor back.

Well I ordered the head today from this guy (http://www.engnbldr.com/head_shop.htm) with the crawler cam. :xpimp: I hope it was the right decision. It wont be here until a WEEK from TUESDAY errrrrr. So the 4Runner should get the motor and tranny bolted in the weekend before I get the head (which is no biggie) and then the day after I get the head I should be able to button it up.
I just hate having spent 1000 bucks on a motor and I don't even have it setting in front of me. It's like when you hand someone a check and he doesn't cash it right away he takes 2 weeks to do so and it just makes your stomach turn in knots.:(
well damnit I can't do a damn thing.

I can start putting things together now!
Only waiting on the block, crank, and rods from Gunn Automotive tomorrow will be 2 weeks that they have had it (said it should take a week). Kinda concerned about that.

WOO HOO my Block Crank Pistons and Rods are all setting in my garage and I am too excited to sleep. I am going to Match port the head and manifold. I talked to the machine shop and they said that there is no better way to sqeeze more HP and flow out of an engine for free. stopped at lowes and picked up some dremmel bits too.

Here are some pics of what I got done today. I got a little excited and forgot to take pics during crank install had a bitch of a time with the thrust washers.
My torque specs seem a little light does this sound right
mains = 76 ft lbs
rods = 43 ft lbs
I put red loctite on the rod bolts and I'm going back and putting it on the main bearing cap bolts.
The garage floor isn't clean by any means so I don't want to hear it (I got enough shit to fill a 2 car garage and no work bench). :D
Three of the pistons/rods installed

I use an engine assembly grease instead of oil because it is just easier to work with and it stays put. That way when I start it up there is some lube in there to keep from a dry start-up and I have yet to figure out how to "prime" a 22r without turning it over a couple of times.

ARP studs are what I'm leaning towards but I don't like the Idea of having to remove the two rear ones to remove the head while in the vehicle. I think that I'll be using head bolts for now.
What I plan on doing is this:
1. Install the Trans.
2. Install the motor witout the head on it. (only for ease of installation)
3. Install head and all elec. vacume and acc. bracets.
The Injectors wont be here until next week so I wont be able to fire it up Sunday but it should be as close as it's going to get. Barring any hang ups which there always are.
So having said that..
To do list:
clean trans off
clean the rest of the parts being bolted to motor
degrease engine bay
Upgrade to 1" master cylinder
Bolt up:
Oil pick-up
Oil pan
the plate behind the flywheel
flywheel
motor mounts
new clutch master and slave
trans and shifters
motor
timing chain
radiator
what ever is left
brackets
hoses
electrical connections
drive shafts
starter
I think that's it in a nut shell If there is something that you see that I missed please speak up. I tend to overlook many things because I get excited about the end result.
I also don't know if the tank had fuel in it when parked or not so I have to check that some time before connecting the fuel lines. I'm begining to think that 700 was a little much for it. :D
poorboyota26
06-03-2008, 04:55 PM
So I pulled up to the complex with the 4Runner on the trailer and I SMELL VARNISH gerrrrrrrr!!! The tank has at least 10 gallons of it and it's coming out the fuel lines in the engine bay. so I have to drain it and clean it. I've never used additives to reverse bad gas do they work? Would it be hard on a new motor?
poorboyota26
06-03-2008, 04:59 PM
I bought new filters and some stabil for after I clean out the tank and any residue that's left. I was thinking of hooking the comp.and battery up to fire up the fuel pump and pump that stuff out of the tank but I bet that will cook the pump and I have officially run out of money today. So no new pump.
I had the motor mostly assembled and went to put the rear main seal on and can't find the bolts or the bolts to the flywheel so I called Brian and he was able to get me some from their parts area at Burt. beers for you Brian. So now I'm going back to the parts store to get a block heater that I'm sure I'll be needing next winter. I would rather put one in now while I have the freeze plug out instead of draining it and doing it in the runner.
I didn't get done what I wanted to yesterday so I have to do it today and the motor prob. wont go in until later. I don't want to F things up too bad so I have to be a little patient. I do need to get this thing running though as someone has shown interest in my truck.

So I got the engine bay cleaned and the trans. semi clean and was looking for a serial # on the trans to verify that it is in fact a r151 (couldn't find one) and found that who ever had it last BROKE the slave cylinder mount      so to who ever that was FUC* YOU mother FUC*er gawd I'm pissed and out of money to boot. So I thought that just perhaps the w56 bell housing might bolt up. NOPE. F it I'm going to stuff it in and see if it works until I get more money to buy a different one. I don't want to put the w56 in cause I am going to tear it apart for a crawler (it has a top shifting transfer case). Sooo on ward and upward I guess. Still pissed off though hope no one shows up right now I'm throwing sh!i around the messy garage and drinkin beer like it's going out of style :D

Well after searching for someone who has head bolts in stock I got some coming from napa, 25 bucks for the set. I was just in the store and thought I'd ask so that's that. They wont be here for a few days though so I have to wait again errrrrr. I want to fire this thing up soo bad.

So things have absolutely not gone as planned :( Par for the course I guess. The motor is sitting on my garage floor waiting for clutch-to-flywheel bolts and water pump pully studs. I can't get the damn things out. I have to get it running by thursday afternoon cause I want to get it broke in this weekend. Sorry Doug I know you wanted to be there when it first fired maybe you'll be lucky and I wont get chit done and wont fire it up until Saturday. If that happens then we will drink to it and smash a beer bottle against the bumper and name it.:D

OK come hell or high water the motor is going in TODAY (friday) I don't have time not to. I am on vacation this next week and I don't want to spend it wrenching on my chit all week. I want to have some fun with the 4 funner.
SO anyone want to come over is more than welcome. I could use some help on the dropping of the gas tank thing. I think there is like 4 or 5 gallons in it and I've never dropped one out of a 4 Runner before (couple of times with the pick-up but that was cheating no bed).
I will be installing the motor today and then finishing up all the other BS tomorrow.
I have to:
Finish cleaning the:
Distributor
Valve cover
Throttle body
Remaining harnesses and hoses and other junk like that.
Drop the tank and clean it too.
Change trans oil
Install shifters
Install drive shafts
Go through all the left over parts and see what I forgot.
If there is anyone with a 22RE that has some free time this weekend and wants a free 12 pack of what ever you want, then you should most definitely come over. AHHEM Hurley, Isaac

SO I got accomplished what I wanted to do today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's in and I just have some things to put together including hoses and what not. The varnish isn't as bad as I had thought (it's pretty much yellow gas not real thick) so i think I'm just going to drain it and put some BG44K in there and hope that it is all good. The complex I live in smells like bad gas as it is after draining 5 gallons of it and spilling some (so does my arm).
I was going to wash parts as I went but I don't really have the time to do that now and I will give it a good scrubbing when I have it running.
The engine went in so smoothly we had to take a beer break just to make up for the time alloted. Seriously it was like: Roll it up to the runner and drop it down in the engine bay. It took 20 minutes total. In the past that has always been a hassle trying to get the motor to line up with the trans.
On with the Pic's

I really want to thank Dan (Hurley842002) for his help and for the reference vehicle. He has the same year and motor that I have and was a great help to me for where all the connections go and what not. Any time you need anything Dan let me know. I am super excited right now. I have to get the bolt and Nut that hold the starter on and one more bolt for the Trans/engine braces but that should be it as far as parts I need to get.
poorboyota26
06-03-2008, 05:21 PM
MM K I need some input here.
I cut out the trans tunnel to accomodate the shifter and now I'm wondering if there is a console that the turbos had that I might be able to get a hold of.
I got the starter bolt and nut from A-n-A Trading post (thanks Brian) but the last bolt I needed isn't working. It's the bolt that goes through the intake second from the front. It has an Allen head on it and the one that I have is bent. The replace ment that I bought at A-n-A isn't catching a thread and it has 1/2 an inch before the head hits the intake to snug up.
ANYONE HAVE A BOLT FOR THIS. I've almost got this thing done and that stupid bolt is the only thing holding me up. I have to have the upper part of the intake off to get to it and also the fuel rail. So once I get it in there I can button it up and hit the switch.
So close yet so far.
poorboyota26

I got a bolt and put it all together (thank you Scotty I might be up tonight though) and started filling it with oil and antifreeze.
SO when you assemble your motor make sure that your torque wrench says
FT-LBS
not
IN-LBS
:banghead: :explode: :banghead: :xsmash: :xsmash: :xbarf:  :suicide: :slap: :buttkick: :jawdrop:
That's right people I assembled the entire motor with all the wrong torque specs and it started leaking antifreeze out the side of the block. So I get to dissassemble the thing and re torque EVERY STINKING bolt again.
So I'm doing what every respectable shade tree mechanic would do. I'm going fishing and getting F'ing DRUNK.:xbeer2: :xbeer2:
If no one is doing anything tomorrow I'll be up all night and all tomorrow doing it again. Hopefully I get it right this time.

Well I didn't get drunk but I caught a fish. So I guess that's OK. I'm going to drive over to my dad's in Loveland (1 Hour away) and pick up the correct torque wrench and pull an all nighter (or at least get the crank and rods re-torqued and the bottom end back in). Then get a few hours rest and spend the holiday doing the rest. I'm just sad right now I was 1 hour from firing it up. :( Guess it's better that it did it before than after.
poorboyota26
06-03-2008, 05:27 PM
It's DONE!
I'm currently running at 38 hrs straight and that damn thing is in and ready to fire as soon as I can get a gas tank and fuel filter.
yep the tank is so rusty that it looks like moab. chunks and red rust all over inside.
I think I'm going to get a new fuel pump in case the old one craps out and a couple of filters to run on until the new tank gets here. I researched it and you can run with a rusty tank just replace your fuel filters often. I am pretty quick at it already with all the motor problems and all so it wont be too much of a hassle.
I'm to the point where I just want to drive the damn thing and see if all this work is worth it. I don't even know if the diff is good or if the brakes work or if the hubs will lock or if or if or if.........
so I'm just going to go for the gusto and do it. I don't care what the hell happens I have to find out if it'll drive before I dump any more money into it.
Anyone know where I could get a NEW tank (not a fuel cell I'm not ready for that yet).
Thanks for the words of encouragement here are some pics of the rust and the motor in and ready. It's got some cleaning left to be done and I reused most of the hoses until I can get them replaced. but it looks pretty much like any old 4Runner engine bay as of right now. Maybe a little bit more clean than Dans but...:D

IT's ALIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ran it long enough to break in the cam and figured I could change the trans. and transfercase oil and bolt up the drive shafts while it cooled down then I'd take it for a drive.
Did you know that the turbo tranny not only has a biger input/output shaft it has a bigger shaft for the d/s to bolt up to. :banghead:  :aahg: :dunno:
poorboyota26
06-03-2008, 05:35 PM
I went to bolt up the drive shaft and wouldnt youknow that the Turbo trans has a bigger bolt pattern on the output flange. So after a few phone calls and trying to figure out what the hell I was going to do to drive this thing tonight. ScottyC from addicted told me that I coudl just drill out the pattern on the flange being that the drive shaft is self centering.
It worked great I'm washing up now so that I can take it to the gas station and then the woman to dinner for being a good sport. Thank you for helping me think outside the box Scotty I really owe you. I'll drive up and bring it by the shop tomorrow.

It's all I can do to keep from crying.
I didn't clean the gas tank (I cleaned it but not too well) and I'm paying for it today. It is dieing and acting like it is out of gas (vapor lock). I think either the screen in the tank is clogged or the filter. I have an extra filter but not a screen.
I didn't clean the tank very well because I have a new one setting at Advanced Auto. I don't have the 200 for it until friday so I was hopeing to just get by until then but it looks like I will have to tear it apart now and see if that is the prob. I have to go with the new tank route because I don't have one of those fancy schmancy houses that has a hose, yard and a drive, that all you rich boys have (yet).
On a good note I got my tires today 31x10.5x15 BFG AT's. :woot:
I also got 4 used BFG at's of the same size. This guy was standing next to me and was like "I want to get those 31" tires off of my 4Runner", and I was like " I'll take em off of your hands" and the guy behind the counter went :jawdrop: because he thought he had just lost the sale. "I just want them for a full size spare" I said and the guy was like ok. I gave him 20 bucks for the 4 of them and it was done.
I got dibs on one and Hurley842002 has dibs on one. The fourth is trash but there is still one left if anyone wants a full size spare they aren't the greatest of tread but it'll get you off the trail and home and then some if you have a blow out. I'll post something in the 4 Sale section too.

So after replacing the Gas tank (200) Fuel pump (130) 2 Strainers (32) 2 Fuel filters (30) and waiting on the side of the road for things to cool down (myself included), I get this ASS HAT at the junk yard that tells me to go buy a new, From the dealer, fuel pump. He was a total jerk about it too and wouldn't sell me the crap he just left in the toilet let alone the parts I needed.
So I go across the street to a u-pull-it place. I'm looking for a coil. Thinking that once the coil heats up it shorts out and quits sending a strong spark to the Dist. Not one to be found. In 9 trucks and 4 Runners from 79-89 not one coil.
But wait there is hope.
I decided that if this guy was what he said he was (a Toyota owner for life) there may be some truth to what he said. (I'll tell ya in a min.) So I look for a truck/ Runner with a tank in it and a fuel pump in that. I find one. pull the return hose and take a big whiff. GAS. Not varnish. This is good. so I run back to my 4 Runner grab the proper wrenches to remove the high pressure line and the screws for the cap, pulled it out and..................It's NEW brand F'ing NEW OMG I stuffed it under my shirt and ran for the counter and paid for it as fast as I could before someone else sees it. It was kinda funny really you should have been there. I run home as fast as my fuel starved vehicle could go and installed the piece.
The explanation of what was happening:
When you purchase a fuel pump from a parts place it isn't made nearly as well as OEM. So much that when the pump heats up it creates an air pocket in the pump itself sending it up the line. This air pocket makes your vehicle act as if it were vapor locking. The exact thing that an electric fuel pump is supposed to help prevent. So when I asked the ASS HAT at Budget automotive junk yard for a COIL he said to go get a $360 pump from the dealer and be done with it. He gave me that exact explanation as to why my pump wasn't working.

I now have 540 miles on my perfectly running 4Runner and I have loved it for the last 440.
I spent 4 of the 5 days I took for vacation working on it and I'm really quite bitter about it but what can ya do you know.
Here are some before and after Pics:

we had a great time and it performed flawlessly, except for the hard starting issue.
I think I have a dirty cold start injector or it just isn't worki
