Did you talk to your buddy rearding running the Yukons down the highway. I take it from your latest post that you have.....
As far as the fuse issue goes...... I would like to run flanges, but the jury is still out on wether that will destroy my axle u joints. From what i was told the yukon super joints will burn up at highway speeds.
3 words... Drive Home Flanges!
I have the Summit Machine flanges with 300m CTM gear slugs....... they have a lock ring that allows you to run the cap without the gear....... only takes a minute to pop the gears in and out.:D

I believe he is thinking more along the lines of how I am - if you lost your rear driveline for some reason, limping home in front wheel drive. I've seen it done, but I believe he had axle joints with bearings. I will ask the guy who ran his like that if he was running Yukons (or the like).

I've driven mine home on the front only several times with my CTMs....... never had a problem....... as a matter of fact, I just cleaned and inspected the caps after I took the "blowed up" stuff out and they look like new. I would assume that the Yukons are no different... they both use bronze bushings and very little grease.

That sounds interesting. They on the Summit site? got a link?
I was wondering if anything like that was availble. But wouldnt the lock ring tend to be the weak link in that set up? Would it gain much over lock out hubs?

Yeah thats what im trying to figure out. And i have the same issue with the zerks on mine, they dont take the grease.
I talked to Randy's about it, they just acted like i was an idiot and didnt know what i was talking about.... I will see if i can hunt something down on it too.
I saw somewhere on the web that there was supposed to be a spring under the zerk, I cant find the site now, but mine dont have any springs under them, i wonder if that might be an issue.

Whats the farthest you've driven like that? I believe he told me that whenever he's done that he would hit them with grease whenever he stopped to get fuel (assuming it's a long trip home).

Longest trip was about 100 miles. A couple times was 50-60 miles. All at highway speeds of 70-75mph. Hell, I didn't even grease them at all except the initial assembly for the first 3 years I ran them. :lmao:

From what I've read, it takes a very small amount of grease since the tolerances are so close - explains why they won't take any grease, since they are so new and probably still full. Also read where they won't (not supposed to) squirt grease out of the caps like conventional joints do.
uh huh.....I said squirt.....:D

If the clip only retains the gear slug, then it basically has no forces applied to it (other than minimal side load from the slug itself). Haven't seen them, but I would say the clip isn't a factor on strength.

Not sure I follow... There's a retainer spring that slides into the hub groove and replaces the old retainer ring that holds the hub in... that keeps the backer that holds the cap on in place so it can't pull out......... the backer stays in when you put the gear in, which pushes the gear into engagement, essentially the same as a locked selectable hub at that point but solid and with much better spline engagement. With the gear out, the axle just free floats in the spindle like it did when the hub wasn't engaged.

It just replaces the standard circle clip that rides in the hub groove to retain the selectable hub, so I don't see it being a strength issue at all......... the caps bolt directly through the backer and the drive gears sandwiching everything together.

So you're running 40's on your rig correct? I wouldn't mind running 38's-40's this year on the UA, but my rims are only 9" wide (TrailReady actually lists them as 8.5", but they are wider). Exactly what size tires & wheels are you running?

I almost got to try out the roll cage this weekend at Grayrock, but the only picture anybody got was on a cell phone after I had finally got it to climb out of this monster rut. At one point, I could lean my elbow out the window and touch the ground......
As usual, the picture is very deceiving - if you tried to run the "flat" looking area above the rut, you would be guaranteed a roll because it was way off camber.

I'm running 40 x 14.50 x 17 Maxxis Creepy Crawlers on 9" wide Pro Comp "soft 8" steelies with rock rings. (eventually I'll run internal beadlocks) I run the tires at 7-10 psi all the time and have only lost a bead once (severe undercut) I'd say you're fine with those rims up to about a 15-16" wide tire.

Yeah, I knew I was forgetting something.... He said as long as you hit them with some grease every so often it wouldn't be an issue, but I have no idea how long they will survive between greasing. And mine did come with those flush style zerk fittings I linked, I tried to throw some grease in mine yesterday, but they wouldn't hardly take any. I'm going to do some more looking on Yukon's site and probably call our local Randy's Ring & Pinion to ask them also.
I know that when I was running the Yukon super joints they said not to over pressure the caps or you would ruin the seal. Once you broke the seal the grease (anti seize) would not stay in the cap. So I just used a little pressure after runs to make sure they were good and never had any problems. Also unlike the CTM's the Yukon super joints use a chromoly cap with a 300m cross. Not a brass sleeve.

Yes, the CV will move the ds out from the tcase a little and help clear the xmember. I don't have the same situation since I made my own xmember and my tcase is clocked up to flat.
Brian, do you have any measurements on your front DS yet? When you do, let me know. I have a spare front drive shaft that is a toyota CV on the tcase end. It would save you some coin if you are able to use it and just add a second CV on the other end.
I also know a shop here in Indy that would do the work and do it well.
Let me know if I can help you out.

Naw, they stuff fine.....it's the whole oil pan vs. D-60 thing. I have a reverse sump, but at full (flat) compression my diff barely clears the oil pan (like .00001" since the diff has clearanced the pan on its own) and my ram will almost touch the pan. So it's more of a "having a real engine" thing :flipoff4:!
The tires will stuff as far as I will let them.....believe me - if it was just sheet metal it would have been dealt with long ago!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/100_0147.jpg
Get the 4runner sump. That should help you out I would think. Not only that but if you change that weak 1350 ujoint in the front and rear to a Toyota style flange and drive shafts, not only will you get better angles and a smoother drive, but you'll also have a driveshaft system that is stronger than what you have now. Just sayin'

Also, you can clearence those Toyota CV's. I have a complete how too in my build thread on Tacoma world. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/builds/23170-building-beast.html

Pictures really don't do them justice since my camera wasn't wanting to cooperate with taking pictures in the dark without the flash on. I was on a night run a few weeks ago and was wishing I had these, I have a few more coming up so I will get to try them out soon hopefully. These lights are easy to install since they have a strong magnet in-bedded in them, they are also supplied with a self-tapping screw if you would rather mount them with that (there's a hole in through the middle of the light for the screw. With the upcoming UA and the threats of deep mud I've been hearing about, I decided to rework my original gettofabulous extended intake to make it a little more water tight. Also added some mud protection to the fenders and engine compartment. I have no use for a snorkel, but did want to get the intake up high enough to handle the deepest water/mud that I would be willing to put my rig through. I think this came out as a good compromise and the truck runs great with the new set-up.
First, cut the lip off the factory air box to be able to mount & seal a new connector on it -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/ab1.jpg
Next, found a intake connector at Advance Auto, it came in a kit with the original flex tubing I used on my previous version of an extended intake -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/ab2.jpg
Then luckily found out that 3" Sch. 40 PVC fit snuggly over the fitting -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/ab3.jpg
Also found out the hard way to use the proper glue when using PVC & ABS together, the one in the red worked well - the heavy duty PVC glue that I originally tried didn't take to the ABS -

Used my heat gun to form the corner of the connector to the air box for a tight fix, it's not pretty, but it won't leak either -

Next, wanted to get the 3" Sch. 40 pipe a little thinner at the top so I could stuff it far up in the fender, so I took my torch to it and made the opening oval shaped -

John- Not sure where your factory intake was. I have a snorkel (more for entertainment than anything else) and while I will never 'drive' in water that deep, it did occur to me that entering water as deep as I'd want to drive, if it were a steep entrance into the water, it would put the entire nose of the truck into the water until the rest of the truck entered...for me there's one trail that I'll hit where the snorkel will do it's job. Nice work!

06-08-2009, 08:48 AM
Yeah, they don't make a snorkel for a 1st Gen Tundra - so I will just have to live with this and be careful. If I see the rig in front of me hood deep, I'm going to get a little momentum and kill the engine before I even get to the water - then Andrea can wade & winch :xdevil:!
My original intake was right above the passenger side tire, facing back, and was always getting filled with mud that was slinging off the tire - a real PITA.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/factoryintake.jpg
Nice work. I still prefer the security (short term at least) of the in cab snorkle. I have a tee cut into the engine compartment with a cleanout that I keep forgetting to remove that should cut down the in-cab noise for day in and day out.
It is kind of loud I guess, but pretty much everything else is too and I've gotten used to it.

I originally had a second flex hose attached to the box and ran up inside the engine compartment high, thinking that if I got to a deep spot I could stuff something in the intake under the fender and pull the duct tape off the one under the hood. It would be pretty cool to put a tee and a 3" PVC ball valve in where you could divert the intake to in-cab only when you needed it. I have a hard time getting wire through my firewall anymore now that I have so much shit stuffed under the hood, so I doubt I could get my intake inside the cab. I was just reading a guy's post on Pirate, he ran his intake tube behind the fender like I did, but ran it all the way back and tied into the hood cowl under the windshield. He also added a drain for rain water - not too bad of an approach.
Not sure how the Tundra's are setup- but mine is cut in to the cab right behind the passenger kick panel. The only thing I was cautioned about there was not letting the hole saw grab and go because the ECU is back there.
The valve would be pretty trick- but it is tight under there, even with the mighty 2.7.

Don't feel bad WES I have mooched my fair share off JC. I had to move to Colorado so he wouldn't harass me about getting his rims back. I have been parting his truck out one piece at a time. Tires, wheels, leaf springs, front and rear axles, and I am sure there is more.

Got the Goodyear's mounted up over the weekend. The sidewalls are definitely stiffer than the KM2's, but they ride good on the road and are as quite. The Goodyear's are a heavier tire for sure, and for some reason they are taller, even though the 37's are listed as 36.8" from each manufacturer. When I put by brand new spare BFG up next to the Goodyear, there was over an inch of height difference. I picked up about 3/4" of clearance under my differentials, I'm sure the stiffer sidewalls also help. I did have to have these balanced, worst one took about 8 oz. of weight. The BFG's have been on my rig for a year and have been smooth with no balancing, but I've also cut two sidewalls in the last year........so there's always trade-off's I suppose........
I also replaced my 100W Lightforce Striker 170's with some new 35W Striker 170 HID's, I thought my original one's were bright until I turned these damn things on!

How did the new MTR's do?
They actually did good all the way around, except for the fact that the thick bead profile wouldn't let my TrailReady locking rings seat all the way and caused bolts to shear. They didn't seem to have that problem with other brands of bead lock's that were on the trip. I believe TR & GY are now working together to come up with something that will make that combo work better together. I have thin aluminum spacers that will fix the problem, but I think I will be moving up to the 38"-40" range sometime soon anyways.
The ideal tire for me would be the KM2's with the MT/R sidewalls - I don't know why someone can't come up with the perfect dual-purpose tire after all these years..........

Well, my rig has now become part Suzuki Samurai…..it's one of the only manufacturer's I hadn't sourced yet! I always try to take some good “lessons learned” notes away from our experiences on the UA and this year’s theme was tight trails and huge dumbo mirrors don’t play well together! So I decided to replace the factory mirrors with something with a little lower profile and also something that was readily available and wouldn’t break the bank next time I decide to smear them down the side of my doors. Turns out that the mirrors on Tim Hardy’s rig caught my eye this year since they were small, foldable, and had a mount I thought I could work with. The fixed portion of the factory mirror sticks out so far that they were getting hit often, and they're also very rigid, so when they would clip a tree the door would bend so bad that the windows wouldn’t roll up. So after a little fab work, I now have very low-profile mirrors (they now stick out about 2" when folded vs about 7" before) that can be replaced for about $25 a piece and I can actually still see out of them for my daily commute as a bonus!

I'm probably gonna to sell them when I get close to having enough cash to buy some 38" or 40" KM2's. I'm thinking that I can get away with the 4.88's if I go with 38's.

All that is. Is proof that mall parking lots can get extreme.
Is there already someone else that is first in line for the KM2s? or can I have that honor? (I think they would look great with my taco sitting in the driveway. ;) )
I also like the mirror idea. fortunately on the first gen tacos, the mirrors fold closely to the bodies already. Otherwise I would be seriously looking into this mod as well.

I'm thinking that I can get away with the 4.88's if I go with 38's.
If you go to 38's or 40's I'm thinking you'll have to regear. When I ran the michelin 38.7" tires, the truck wasn't like it was going up hills on 35's or even on the freeway. Definitely had to press the gas pedal or shift down. Could've been the weitght to but, once you get up to 37"+ tires, those fawkers get heavy anyways.
01 Tundra
08-05-2009, 11:59 AM
So for everybody asking about my KM2's, I'm considering selling them. The spare is brand new, the fronts are worn 0.098" = 84% tread left, based on BFG's 20/32" new tread depth and the rears are worn 0.124" = 80% tread left. The tires have around 6,500 miles on them (give or take) and have been rotated once. There are some of the expected nicks, etc - but no major chunks out, cupping, or any of that, they are still extremely smooth @ 75 MPH with no balancing at all.
The cheapest I've found 37"x12.50"x17" KM2's online is at discount tire, which is $341 each with free shipping (Tire Rack's are $325, but the shipping is almost $100 per tire for me!)......anyways - 5 x $341 = $1705.
I'm thinking $1000 is a fair price for all five, not really wanting to mess with shipping them ;).

Got me thinking.....wonder what a homemade one could turn out like.....you know......say.....buy a wrecked TJ, stretch the frame (115”-120” wheelbase), fab a custom dove-tailed bed, internal cage, custom half cab soft top, then put my Tundra engine, computer, Atlas, trans, & axles in it. It would be the ultimate mut……a Toyota-powered, GM/Ford driven Jeep, it might just burst into flames!
I could keep the weight down and make it perform great both on & off road, and would still have enough storage to make long-range trips. Maybe set it up for 40” tires and 4-link it, keep it low and set it up where it can run higher-speed stuff and still handle the rocks well……..maybe even use 75% of a TJ tub so it would be a kind of extended cab short bed......hmmmmm

I'm just trying to figure out how to have the cake and eat it too. I love the space inside my rig, especially when driving it across country, but it's tipping the scales around 6,800# loaded down with tools, gear, and my fat ass. One of the guys on our trip had a built JK (60's F&R w/ 42's) and it weighed 7k, so that made me feel a little better, but if I could get mine closer to 6k it would work a lot better for me.
I'm thinking -
1. Move the rear axle up 14" and the front axle up 2", that would give me a 120" wheelbase.
2. Bob the front of the fender skins and cut the excess frame off the rear. Also have to rework the bed cage, maybe keep the sliders on the sides (since I use them so much in the tight trails around here) but lose the upper portion since I have a in-cab cage now.
3. Lose the front Alcans, since they have been through 8 yrs of pure hell and are definitely showing it. Go back with a 3-link with 12" coilovers in the front, this would keep the same amount of articulation up front. Keep the Alcans on the rear.
4. Drop the truck another inch so the frame is around 22.5" off the ground.
5. Cut the fenders 1.5" higher and move the factory flares up.

Seriously???........ 14" (12 actually) would only put that bus at 120"?
That kinda put's it's size into perspective for me better! I'm right at 123" with the rear scooted forward as far as it'll go without getting rid of or moving the factory gas tank and my front axle (because it's linked) is smooshed up as close to the cab as it can go and still clear the tires. If I redo the tank up into the bed I can easily push the rear forward another 8-10" before I start getting into the back of the cab. Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you for sure!

Granted I'm in a Tacoma, but that's what I ended up doing. I inboarded the rear leafs and shorted the wheelbase by 10". I could have gone 12" but was thinking about running 42"s-44"s later on and wanted to make sure I had room. The bed was toasted pretty good, so I did my flatbed and will be working on skins for it shortly. In order to shorten the wb, the fuel tank needed to be moved. I went with a 22 gallon ford tank because it fit between the frame rails and below the bed. I found tank sizes ranging from 17 to 35 gallons.

Yeah, I hated the stock tank location and the fact it was about 3 gallons smaller from being smashed. Moving it allowed for the axle to come forward.
Make sure to get a tank for a fuel injection vehicle. My 22gal is a mid 80's to early 90's ford van tank. I would have bought a used tank from the junk yard, but here in the Phoenix area they puncture the ones left in vehicles and the ones they pull and sell they charge almost as much as a new one. I got mine new from Rock Auto, part # F15D $87.99. I also bought a new pump/sender kit part # SP376H $79.79. I got the filler neck piece and wiring plug from a local junkyard iirc for $20. Bought filler hose and fuel line at Napa for about $20.00. Oh and I almost forgot, you need to get a Vent/Check Valve and grommet/seal for the tank. It's the white plastic piece that snaps into the top of the tank where a hose attaches. Damn thing was like $25 or $30 and I only found it at the dealer. So figure about $230 for new stuff with reusing the Toyota pump.
After finding out the fuel pump pressures weren't similar like I thought, I ended up using my Toyota pump on the Ford sending unit assembly with minimal modification. When the tank is full, the gauge reads 3/4 tank and when empty it's on 1/4 tank. That's close enough for me, I could black out the original full & empty lines on the gauge but didn't feel it was that important.

So Wyatt - do you think the 2.0" Kings would be ok for my rig, or should I be looking at the 2.5"?
2.5's fer sure.....but i would wait for Wyatt to confirm. I cant imagine that 2.0's would be able to pull duty on something heavier like the new Tacos or a Tundra.

irelavent...the increased fluid capacity is the only reason he would need a 2.5 and i dont see him doing whoops in the desert at 80 mph for any extended period of time? plus the 2.0 is smaller and when he gets the welder out and starts throwing brackets on the frame, he will see he needs all the room he can get~!
if we were talkin airshocks, then you 2.0/2.5 statement would be valid, but who wants a stupid airshock on a street driven trail machine like this?

Had a great ride with the Georgia Cruisers Club this past Saturday in Tracy City. Andrea drove the entire day, figured it's about time for her to start getting some seat time so I was spotter & camera boy all day. It didn't take me long to realize that she's a natural for this stuff and was picking great lines on her own..........so I decided to shut up and try to learn a thing or two :D!

2.5" Your truck is too heavy for the 2". It would work, but I think over a short time you'll be wishing you went with 2.5's. Hell, your trucks heavier than mine.
Yes, it is all about size here;)

True.... to a point. He may not be hitting the woops in his tundra, but at 6000# plus he's not only going to be working those shocks, but the springs as well. The fluid temps would rise faster just from the weight of his truck. You know how hot shocks can get just from running down fire roads. And, unless he went with some really heavy springs in the front he could run into premature fatgue of those springs. Add in the weight of all his equipment and he'll be wishing for 2.5 coilovers. Plus the size difference in a tundra won't be as noticable as it would be in a smaller Taco. His tundra is bigger than my '05 Taco and I shoved my 2.5" all the way in my engin bay.

40's just arrived so it's going to be a late night for me tonight :D.
Installed 5.13's last Friday and also did a few very small mods to help clear them -
Had to lose the windshield washer reservoir that came factory in the passenger side wheel well. I already reduced the original size years ago by making a S.S. reservoir, but it had to go all together this time. Not a lot of room in the engine bay, especially while still planning on 3-linking the front and having to make room for the coil-overs, but I did manage to squeeze about one liter under there -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/bottle1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/bottle2.jpg
Did a little trimming up front on the inner fender wells -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/trim.jpg
Dropped the rear bump stops down 2" -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/bumps.jpg
Reworked the front bumper side supports to gain a little clearance -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/bumper1-1.jpg
And slid the spare tire mount back 4" to clear the shocks -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/01tundra/spare-1.jpg
And the new shoes -

Yeah, I got it a few minutes ago - sent the picture to my buddy for a 2nd opinion. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the pattern looks like it's not centered on the ring gear teeth - have you double checked the pinion depth?

Yeah, I messed with it a few times, I ended up with the exact same shim amounts as Zuk did on the same install, on the same rearend, with the same gears...thought it was too good to be true. The pattern matched up with the "acceptable" patterns printed with the gears. The part of the pattern you can see clearly is the main contact portion, the rest of the pattern is soft towards the outside of the ring gear, if that makes any sense to you...

As long as the pattern matches an "acceptable" one in the install book and the backlash is in the 0.008" neighborhood I'd say you are good to go .

0.007" will work fine. Consensus is the pinion looks a little deep, may look a little better with about 0.008" - 0.010" less pinion shim.

Picked up 1-5/8" under the diffs, frame is at 24-7/8" off the ground, and they don't rub anything at full steering lock. Now I will hopefully just have to do some minor trimming here and there. When I get around to shaving my 14-bolt I'll pick up another 2" of clearance.

And luckily they get to stay on there ! I twisted it up pretty good this weekend and the only places the the tires touched are on a few support tubes for the bed (just knocked the paint off a little), the very bottom of the frame rail up front (when fully stuffed and turned), and a small place on the plastic fender liner in the front, all of the places are smooth and won't hurt the tires and we never even heard (or felt) them hit, so it's all good.
