I just got a 2WD 2005 Limited Double Cab with the TRD off road package. Now please forgive my ignorance, but I just traded in my little 2.7l Tacoma PreRunner, so I'm not too savy on the TRD package, but what does the following mean that I got off Toyota's website. "Automatic limited-slip rear differential not available with mechanical limited-slip rear differential. I was looking in the manual to see which I have (if any), but I can't find anything on it. The dealer forgot to give me my window sticker which I think would specify if it has it, so I plan on getting that today when I drop off the pink slip to the Tacoma.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Looks like I need to change my Avatar too!

You may want to double check that limited status. As far as Toyota is concerned, there is NOT a model number for an 05 ltd tacoma. Could you send over the VIN? I work for a dealer so I could pull up the orginal invoice and let you know what you got.

Also, if you have the offroad package, its a mechanical locking differential. If you have an Auto tranny, you might have the Auto LSD which uses the vehicle stability system to use your brakes to simulate a mechanicial LSD.

Oh geez, I apologize! I failed to mention that it's a Tundra, not a Tacoma.

Sorry

It was my fault, I didnt realize that I was in the T100-Tundra section. Still, for the rear axle, with a VIN I can double check on exact factory installed equipment.

Gratz on your new truck, its a nice one!

You're not going to make a key are you?

The VIN is not indicating the vehicle's equipment, beyond the fact that it's 2wd with a 2UZ V8 and a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The model code should be UCK31L-PRBLKA.

It's definitely a limited slip. There is no factory locker offered in the Tundra.

Vin through dealer daily will show all factory and port installed equipment. As for a key, tundra d-cabs dont have manual trannies, I will stick with my taco thank you very much! :P

not to mention, LTD tundra keys should be transponder chip encoded, that coding is not stored by Toyota, would have to have a master chip key and those are hard to find and terribly expensive!

Good to know!

My buddy was saying that with a VIN, he can make the exact key needed for the vehicle. Kind of scary. Guess I'll test that out on my truck when I start working at the dealer here in Anchorage.

Thanks for the info.... The manual says that when I put the key in the "ON" position, I should see the VSC TRAC and the Traction Control System light blink for a couple seconds to show that it's working and if not, then I should contact the dealer. There is no VSC TRAC or Traction Control System light when I put the key in the "ON" position.

The reason that I ask is that if my truck has the LSD then shouldn't the lights blink to show that the system is working? Or is all this only in the 4WD models?

Again, I apologize for being so dumb in this dept.

Thanks again!

Just look on the rear axle, if there is a sticker saying use lsd oil only then you have the mechanical limited slip, and there are no lights on the dash to indicate it...

I hate when the solution to my questions are that simple. Boy, do I feel like an idiot! The sticker was right there in red and white... "LSD Oil Only". Thanks for pointing that out for me.

One more dumb question... When does the LSD kick in?

Sorry, forgot to post on Saturday afterwork:

Your truck has the mechanical limited slip. It will engage after one tire starts to spin out of control, you will feel it as it dumps the power over to the other tire.

Your truck does NOT have VSC+TRAC, hence the lack of lights. The owners manual covers all tundra's and all possible equipment which is why its telling you to look for the VSC lights. Hope this helps. If you have more questions about your factory equipment let me know!

When does the LSD kick in?

When one tire significantly loses traction....and it doesn't exactly "kick in", it is a friction clutch.
