Looks awesome Nate. You can't go wrong with those tires! Don't know if you saw in your other thread, but you were mentioning about re-gearing. Give me a shout and I'll help you on that.

Funny thing about your pic, my grandfather had a fleet of Terex mining equipment, and I have driven one of those. Not far off from my junk.

Oh yeah, but not suspension or steering, just body, fenders, bumpers, and sliders. The big issue is the front tires locked and stuffed into the back of the grill and bottom of the wheel well. Already took a cutoff wheel to one side toight and got close, it just needs a little more persuasion:saw:

Bought my locks today. Unfortunately longfield no longer makes locks, so I may find a way to modify the ones I am getting to add an anti coning ring. I picked up the ones from Offroadoverstock.com. They are the same as the Kore ones, with free shipping and about $20 less. They are also a Pirate vendor. Just need a new wheel and I am set.

I run those on my junk. One thing I would do before bolting on the outer ring is round off the outer edge of the ring. They will cut tires when you run them at low psi if edges arnt round off.

There's info floating around on Pirate and I believe a vendor that sells anti coning rings... and from what I hear you can use a serpentine belt as well.:D

. . . and from the crap load of research I did about anti coning rings, when I thought I needed to have them. Seems they serve about as much purpose as any good snake oil. Good info on Pirate about using a V belt as an alternative, but still widely considered unnecessary if the beadlocks are installed correctly to start with.

I think Hutchinson is the only company that makes DOT compliant beadlocks which technically means that everything else is illegal...I still drive mine on the street though, cause I'm a fawkin' rebel!:D

Mine had a sticker that said for off road use only. It's a liability thing. I'm not sure if there is actually anything in the law book stating that beadlocks are a no no on roads falling under the "highway" classification.

I doubt you drive that thing everyday Nate, so just get some beadlocks and drive to and from the trail. With all the fake beadlocks out these days, I doubt they would know. I know Jeff makes some good beadlocks at Ballistic FWIW.

they used to market them as the only DOT beadlock but i guess they are not making that rim anymore. good luck with the weld ons nate had a friend who bought a set and once done he couldnt do more than bout 20mph due to the way out of balance issue.
Kaistie
12-07-2008, 01:23 PM
Yeah, it is a bit of a concern. the nice thing about these locks is that they self center on the inside lip of the wheel. The older styles welded to the outside lip, potentially causing an out of balance issue. I hope I don't have that problem though. I really don't want to buy a trailer.

One thing I noticed with my Creepys, and I talked to Eric about this as well from when he ran CC's. Don't even attempt to balance them. With no balancing they ride smoother than with. I never balanced mine and my rig drove actually really smooth at 55-60mph and everyone else running them that attempted to balance them said they rode like shit. Run the PSI a little on the low side and they will make themselves round after you get them a little hot. For comparison, I used to put mine at 7psi front, 6pi back when I was wheeling, and 17psi front, 15 psi back when driving on the road.

I run 14oz. of BB's in each of mine at 25-26 on the highway and they are pretty smooth, smoother than without...... they'll shimmy and hop a tad now and then, but you get used to it (and find "happy speeds")......... the 40's (compared to the egg shaped 38's I had) are great!!........ way smoother than any of the radials I ever ran............ the rock rings don't effect the balance at all either. I can say, and Stroke will agree, if the tires are running mismatched psi, they will wobble, hop wander, etc.

I don't think I will do much for balancing. I have about 14oz of air soft in there right now and it is a little rough. Not sure if I need more, or as Miller said, none.

Mine are perfectly smooth until about 70 with near the same psi in each tire. If I have everything tightened nicely and the tie rods aren't bad, I can push it further. 65-70 and I'm happy.

What pressure are you running them at? Throw another 5oz. in there and they'll prolly smooth out some............ a little over what they need won't hurt 'em............. a little under and they still vibe. :D

Fawk! DIY Beadlocks are a ton of fawking work! Got the first one done tonight and it is holding air just fine. Looks like I need longer bolts though as the 1.5" ones don't quite grab the nylon on the nut very well. Shit it will be nice when they are all complete.

Actually, the tire slipped right over the bead without much effort. I soaped the shit out of it, stood on it while my neighbor used a pry bar. Only took about a minute.
