Mike has a nice bumper fabbed out of square tube and plate. simple and effective design.

I designed and fabricated this abortion all on my own, although it is definetly strong and works well. The very front of your truck is not the best place to start learning how to weld, by the time I got to the rear bumper I was pretty decent at welding, shame all of the ugliest shit is seen first :D !

I think you'd be better off with a plate style with all the rock crawling that you do.

I didn't mind you guys hijacking my thread. :D Any way onto bumpers, I have made two bumpers out of square tube because I have no tube bender. Plate bumpers are awsome but they will most likely weigh more than a bumper made of tubing.
That being said I like both styles, which ever you do make sure to have it be high clearance, you saw my old cow catcher bumper on axle alley.

Whatever I decided to build, it will be a high clearance bumper. I have a couple of ideas in my head. I just need to put it on paper or on my truck.

Here is my bumper. It is made of mostly 3/16" flat stock that has been formed and welded. It is difficult to make a plate bumper without an effective way to cut steel (i.e. a plasma cutter, or a metal saw), where as if you make a bumper from tube, you can get away with cutting it with a chop saw.

I'll have no problem cutting it. I'll have a plasma around when I do it.
