i guess ill start...

that should get this one started. thanks again shannon, for getting the expo tech section going. us expeditionary types appreciate it.
Rigwelderstaco - motivating pics - hope to be there one day. In the mean time, how do you get the flippin' pictures in the thread. I'm still wrestling with the photobucket links. Haven't cracked the code on that one yet....

photobucket -
either click on or move the cursor over the picture that you want to post.
then when the box appears that has all the different links in it, click on, and highlight the box that has IMG next to it.
once its highlighted, right click and "copy"
then move back over here, right click, and "paste".
thats it. thats what i use too is photobucket.
Thanks rigwelderstaco -- I was doing everything but that before...
Anyway, here a couple of my work in progress.

nice truck. how do you like the canbak?? i thought of getting one before i got the shell. i was just worried about someone cutting thru it. now i use a couple of tool boxes bolted to the bed and padlocked.
Thanks but doesn't compare to yours and some of the epic trips you take. But I'm starting - going to Moab in March.
I like the top but I'd never secure anything back there for the obvious reasons - just unsnap the sides and you have complete access unless you took the same precautions you described and bolted down a lockable tool box. My DD is a Prius now, so the Tacoma gets duty on the weekends and trips.
Question for you - I see you are running a Ham radio - your thoughts? I'm thinking about the same in the near future.

yeah this is my budget build. i built the bumpers and light hoop out of scrap metal, and the snorkel out of scrap...all leftovers from work. cheap but effective.
i like the ham radio. i have 3 different frequencies to choose from, and CB. here in socal, we have a lot of repeaters to choose from so most places i work i can find a repeater to talk on during my commute. on the trail i dont use it as much because most people have cb's. i actually need to revamp my antennaes. my transmit and receive are not what they used to be.

Hoping to have ARB bumper and some sliders next week.
So far all it has is Mall terrains and the camper top. Gone camping a few times but no major wheeling involved. Hoping to take a trip out west to explore next year. :xpopcorn2

Well, here's mine. I haven't got to go on any real long trips yet due to work and my wife in college. BUT she grads in May this year (09) and i'm gonna hopefully take a few months or year off work for some traveling!!
I bought a nice digital camera finally a while back after going through one and not being able to take pics while we were out goofing off on some of my friends trails. Anyways, here's mine after snorkel install looking all shinny in the parking lot...

Alaska rocks! This time im moving up there for a while, but im driving all the way there from here in GA instead of flying and shipping my truck. If you get a chance hit up Fairbanks and Bettles, an Denali.

Short of rigwelderstaco junk... the rest of the rigs posted here don't look anymore expedition worthy then my junk...
I think some of you are living a pipe dream of running the Dakar or some shit... :2cents:
rigwelderstaco... wtf is the mirror mount hanging off yer front fender for
Chase crews are definately worthy of being considered prepared and what not... But the purpose of that is to maintain a vehicle during a race or competition... offering some level of comfort to the crew
IMO an expedition rig is a single vehicle that is self contained and self sufficient to supply to the needs of the driver and/or passengers of said rig for long periods away from civilization where there is little to no opportunity to replenish supplies...

Well, I know for myself I've kept my truck light on the build mainly due to my wife liking it as her DD. I'm trying to find her a vehicle she likes, and our family can use. She returned a new Mercedes a while back after about 5 days and wanted to drive my truck again... So that's where we are at.
My plan is to build up my truck all the way and use it as a dedicated Expo rig (total of @$50K). I'm going to Alaska this year. Hopefully next year its down to Argentina. Then we ship to New Zealand (where my wife's family is from) to travel both the north and south islands. After that, Europe and eventually Africa. I will have to switch differ things for each trip. My friends who will be traveling along have both ends of the stick for their vehicles as well. One bud has a Land Rover with over $90K invested and his truck could easily circle the globe right now. While my other friends Jeep is just now getting built. I like to work on my truck as much as I can myself. But that limits me as to what gets done on it since I work overseas...
I have no desire to do the Dakar or any other race. Like many others here, I'm building my rig to travel when and where I want. No "pipe dreams" here. Just my dream.

Haha.. I don't fit in with the crawlers or long travel desert runners. Where do I fit in at this forum? (Rhetorical question.)
I have many things that people may consider expedition, but because I have 2- 5 gal containers instead of an extra 22 gal. gas tank under where my spare tire goes, all of the sudden I'm not expedition? (insert backwards question mark)
Lets see what I am missing...
A getto snorkel
spare tire on top of my truck (because stock position is no good.)
more extra lights than the 4 that I have (I guess 8 makes your vehicle an expedition rig.)
Next picture I take I'll be sure to have my gas cans showing, my shovels hanging out, my lights on, and my bumper with its sub-par winch. My inflatable kayak will have to do as well as my hand held GPS and my hand held spotlight. Lots of bungee cords and tie down straps. And snow, oh ya lots of snow. Not behind the truck in the mountains. It must be on the truck.
Like I said, my truck is work in progress. I do consider it an expedition rig and I will take some pictures of it when I'm done with my build (like that's ever going to happen.) I hope then people will approve of it so I feel like I belong somewhere here at TTORA.
..I think some of you are living a pipe dream of running the Dakar or some shit...
Funny thing you should say that! I'm of to somewhere near La Serena, Chile, to actually watch the Dakar Rally. Sure, I'm not running it, but I will be running along side of it for awhile, in the family Samurai, with all kinds of supplies including a winch. ;) (no snorkel, but I don't think I'll need it where I'm going.) Camping under the stars of the southern hemisphere.
IMO, It will be really nice to be out in the Atacama desert of Chile (the driest place in on Earth, 50 times dryer than Death Valley) exploring instead of, well, anywhere else... :2cents:
Well said cvlighthouse and I've enjoyed watching your build-up and posts from the past.

Well all I can say about expo ready or not is that my truck is able to travel into the remote areas I HAVE available. Yeah its not a hardcore vehicle able to spend 2364567 days out in the middle of the desert but I can pack it and be self sufficient for my area for a few days which is all the Army lets me have at one time without taking leave. Its reliable, stong, carries all my gear, well protected, and I have no doubt that anywhere I can explore near me it will come out just fine.
That being said I surf alot on The Expo and drool over the vehicles. One day when I make more than $1800 a month I will build mine a little more. But until then I will continue to have my expo mind set and dream to be able to keep up with yall. I love the outdoors and love exploring them and being away from civilization. So please dont come bashing on peoples rigs. Thanks alot and dont take this the wrong way I am not ill in anyway and was just stating MHO.:D:saw::saw::welder:

take it easy on my truck there dude!!! i do what i can with what ive got!!! if that means i have to use scrap materials to make the stuff i want, then so fuckin be it!! tacodell needs to keep opinions like that to himself, as far as im concerned, but oh well. before you start bashin on my truck and the way i set it up, go check out my comments, pertaining to this very subject, in the "what makes an expedition vehicle" thread. sorry i still havent figured out how to post a link.
imo, everybody has the right to do what they want to THEIR truck. other peoples opinions dont mean much. the important thing, and the ONLY thing that matters, is that YOUR truck does what YOU want it to do, and take you where you want to go.

so, are you saying that taking (a vehicle) to Baja Mexico and driving in some really nasty, and otherwise completely unnecessary remote locations due to the purpose of supporting a race is not considered an Expedition?
w-m.com would argue that an Expedition is:
1 a: a journey or excursion undertaken for a specific purpose b: the group of persons making such a journey.
journey= travel to baja
specific purpose= support of race vehicle
group of persons= chase team
to me, not that i have completed my english degree as of yet, it would seem that a chase team in the baja 1000 would perfectly fit into the definition of Expedition.

shit, id say it fits the bill pretty well, imo!!!
It is what it is. I've seen some nice, well thought out trucks in this thread either driven by ingenuity and creativity or by what they were able to afford, and a few polarizing opinions as to what expeditionary is. I've also seen some inspiring pics of where you all have been either out on your own, race support, or in your own local wheeling spots. I hope to visit some of those spots soon.
Plus I did the "AC/Defrost Mod" so I got that going for me, too.

What happened to pictures?
We have another thread to talk about what makes an expo rig.
no shit. this isnt supposed to be a thread on anyones opinions about what constitutes an expedition vehicle. pray4surf has already started a thread to discuss that. we all have different opinions about the way a vehicle should be set up, and we all have different opinions about "what makes an expedition vehicle".
Like i, as well as many others, have said:
HOW, WHY, AND WHERE DOES NOT MATTER...IF THE VEHICLE TAKES YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO, GETS YOU BACK, AND DOES WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO, THEN IT IS THE PERFECT VEHICLE.
we all have plans for our vehicles. hell if i could afford it, my shit would definately NOT be built out of scrap materials. as it stands, i dont have a lot of money so i make do. all but 2 of my lights were gifts, what the hell i like a lot of light. my winch may not be a $2000 warn, but its gotten me out of the places ive been stuck. THAT is what matters, not the name on it. lets leave this is shit in the other thread and get back to the reason i started this thread.
SO THAT THOSE OF US WHO USE OUR TRUCKS TO EXPLORE, HAVE SOMEWHERE WE COULD CHECK OUT, AND APPRECIATE EACH OTHERS RIGS.
tacodell - cvlighthouses truck and camper is a fine exploration vehicle, especially when youre idea of exploration isnt the hammers.
cvlighthouse - the least you could have done was made it a little less personal.

Nice response CV :xsmokin1:. Couldn't agree more. You'd probably appreciate my posts on the other thread.
Here's my "junk". All my old trip pics are on a different computer, post-TS-gallery-wipe...most of my pics are in SE Utah, places like the Maze, Dark Canyon, etc...
Starting with the drivetrain, suspension and tire stuff everybody's used to...

37" tires, if I want to use them...they're fun, taken them out a few times, but a few had leaks, so I kept the one good spare & going to TrXus MTs for winter and easy overland stuff.

A little more on the "overland" side here. Unfortunately these were all from a short-duration wheeling trip with a basecamp. We did take the recovery ladders (1.5'x5'x2" fiberglass, used many times now), but only one Scepter H2O jug and two or three fuel cans, and left a lot of stuff at camp for this trail. On long trips, there are six NATO fuel cans and two Scepter water jugs at the front of the bed, lashed to a pair of medium sized D-rings mounted to the bed. The spare tire is lashed to four massive D-rings bolted under the bed. On long trips, the exhaust jack and four lengths of rope (emergency traction assist) sit inside the dish of the spare tire, with a tarp around all of it, then the straps. The cooler is strapped and wedged between the liquids and the spare tire. Shovel is QuickFisted to the left inner bedside, HiLift on the right. The CO2 bottle ends up at the back of the bed, when we're carrying all the fluids. There's still room for firewood, a small charcoal grille, large charcoal bag, spare tarps, trash bag, poo bag, and some tools. Everything that goes in the bed is lashed down. When we're on a long trip, I pull the tailgate...it's 50# of dead weight, like the 20# of dead weight from the carpet, the dead weight of the sheetmetal bedsides and fenders (now fiberglass), the heavy stock rear bumper and receiver, and now the several hundred pounds of dead weight that's the stock bed. Everything back there can be carried perfectly well without using the bed.
Tent and other soft goods all go in the cab for now. Eventually most soft goods will be lashed to the top of the rear cage (not full cage, just where the bed used to be), double-bagged so the outer bag can be left in the vestibule of a nice tent & only clean stuff comes inside. Right now we just use trash bags over the drybags.
Rhino liner on the roof, because I was sick of kayaks scraping the paint. Now I can sit up there, throw stuff up there, don't care. Rhino on the front bumper because it's a great place to stand while you're looking at stuff through the binoculars.
Incidentally, with the rear seat removed it's possible to put the captain's chairs horizontal, so driver & passenger could sleep in the cab if necessary.
Note nothing on the roof, no topper, not even a Can-Back. I decided it was too much dead weight and limited visibility too much, and was a damage risk in the trees...the Can-Back is 80#.
Last time I hit a weigh scale loaded, the truck had a 53/47 weight distro and 6500# GVW (before I ditched the bed). My plan is it doesn't look like an "overland" rig, but it is...so no shit on the roof, glass pulled in, every bit of volume used efficiently, ditch every piece of non-functional or unnecessary steel for glass, aluminum, or tube to do the same job, redistribute more weight to the rear, etc...
It starts here...good view of the low-profile rear bumper and receiver, and the basic tube layout. Rear suspension is getting completely rebuilt, don't know exactly where shocks & bumps need to sit yet, so the sides of the cage aren't finished. 37" spare fits at the rear of the cage, cooler just in front (top opens against the top rear rail), jerrycans and space for a pair of deep Pelican cases under the top bracing, and plenty of space on top to lash soft goods. Massive 20# compressor and air tank, and dual batteries between the frame rails & behind the rear axle to the right to offset the engine, bumper, eventual winch, and front diff weight. MTB mounts will end up on the side rails, with a brace to the center so they can't flop. Cover the entire thing in sailcloth and use a couple metal-reinforced tiedown straps, and it'll be a helluva lot more visually and functionally secure than the bed or my two toppers (CanBack, Snugtop) ever were. IMHO part of a good overland rig is performance in all areas without visually making a big deal about it.
http://thumbnails13.imagebam.com/2282/09731722811887.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/09731722811887) http://thumbnails11.imagebam.com/2282/7ab07422811885.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/7ab07422811885)
The things you can't see or aren't obvious...front air locker, 4.88 gears, multiband HAM radio, water storage in the cab, drybags for soft goods, GPS, compass, topo maps, binoculars, cab and front bumper trimmed to fit 35x12.5 tires, no lift necessary but running maybe 2" over stock (even with the 37s, my roof line is lower than the same year truck with 2.5" spacer+3" body+35" tires), headers, chip, pulley, bone stock stereo except for one of those PIE things, 1/4" belly skid to the front third of the fuel tank, inverter, fuzzbuster, ARB mini compressor, JetBoil stove, Super Siphons for fuel and water, tools, spare parts and factory service manual. Proven comfortable, strong, and long-range years before the rear axle and LT front were installed...I've had this truck nearly eight years now.
Our worst-case water range is two people active in 105* heat for about five days...budgeting 2gal/person/day. Realistically we've never used that much, maybe half that much tops and that's when we're very active, plus rolling with the windows down/core open/fan on high to bleed heat off the engine...a/c is a luxury unless we're moving fast, that may change once the electric fans go in &/or I install the larger alt & the aux fan from a Sequoia.
Worst-case range is a little over 500 miles, best is a little under 1000. It's certainly enough to enter the Maze, run every route, and exit with enough fuel to safely make the next town if Hite is closed, even if the road were completely washed out at the southern exit and we had to backtrack to Green River via Hans Flat. Basically, we can load up for the Maze, not hit a fuel/food/water station for a solid week if we like, roll in comfort and at high speed if we feel like it.

I've recently decided to change the direction on how I want to build my rig. After the SAS, I wanted it geared for crawling. Now, I'm planning on expo style. Specs can be read at the url in my sig. I think the family will enjoy expo traveling a lot better than slow crawling. I'll still do the weekend crawl stuff.
Anyways, once my MT's wear out, I'm switching to an AT type tire for more distance traveling. Plus, it should be less noisy than MT's. Better half will like that. My Uncle recently bought me one of those bed tents, while I decide if I should keep it or use it until I can build a custom canvas top. I'll work on preparing my rig/gear/supplies for expedition outings both for short and long periods of time.
Main thing for me is to concentrate on what I have and work on what I "need" not want. Axles won't change, no plans to modify the engine. Only thing aftermarket on the engine is the muffler. I removed my truck box, to gain my bed space back. Now I can use it for the sleeping quarters.
Here's an old pic but, shows my starting point.

Post up on the CoTTORA board, a couple people might join you.
Recommendations...what are you looking for? Middle of nowhere? Challenge? Scenery? Nearby lodging? Test your truck? Relax?
Believe it or not, there was a snorkel in the works for a while LOL...there's room next to the headers to run it under the truck and up the back of the cab. Trouble was, I wasn't sure if it could be completely, definitively sealed, so I let it go.

If I could afford two wheels sets I would. For now and what I think will be best for the long run a set AT's will be my next wheel set.

Those are "sand ladders", a lot of folks have them for the beach sand down here along the coast. They have some that have interlocking teeth where they can be fit together to make a mat of sorts and give you more flotation in soft areas. They are neat looking on your rig, but cause a lot of wind noise and drag if mounted upright. Mantec makes sand ladders and bridging ladders, see pics below. For the price-$250-$450 I'd rather put that money towards something more worthwhile.. That being said, I have also thought about the possibility of getting a couple of pieces of old highway guardrail and attempt to use that as a similar bridging device...??..it might work. I have some pieces of heavy fiberglass waffled industrial grating that I plan to cut up into waffle bridges like in the pics below. They are lightweight and strong.

I got my fiberglass as drop from a place in California...200$ shipped for 1.5x5 foot of 2x2x2 inch square HD glass, and a pair of smaller, 1.5x2 foot-ish sections of the same material. They replace the tailgate, so net weight is about the same, and they're easy to reach. Used 'em many times. I'd recommend coating them with something, or the glass gets beat up in the rocks.
Make sure the length & width you order will support the truck.

Yep, FlyingWill's well-equipped rig is most likely pretty similar to what our '03 D-cab is gonna look like eventually. But just to keep it real here, here's a look at our expo rig in use on the longest "expedition" we've had it on to-date. This is at a microwave tower at 9,300 feet in Colima that served as base camp for several days.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/JWDicus/Crown%20King%2010-5-08/Sleeping%20Platform%20%20Tonneau%201/Sleeping%20Platform%20Tonneau/5735711771.jpg
Wait, you say, aside from the bed tent that's just a bones stock Prerunner D-cab. Yep. And it took us from AZ to south Texas, across the border into Mexico down to the east coast in Veracruz, over the Sierra Madre Oriental, across the central plateau, over the Sierra Madre Occidentale down the coast, up and down several of the volcanoes along the way, to the southernmost tip of Mexico in Oaxaca, back up through the country, across the border at Texas and home to AZ. Three months and 8,000+ miles on a fabulous trip in a stock Taco. We took it across the border 2 days after we drove it off the lot. You gotta love these trucks for their capability just as they are.
That said, we've modified it a lot since then, though mildly modified compared to some of the rigs shown in this thread. Here's what it looks like now.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/JWDicus/Winter%202008%20Trip/DSC_0848.jpg
For you guys rolling on stock rigs, don't feel like you can't "expo" your trucks just as they are. I'm not going to argue that the mods we do to our rigs don't greatly improve their usefullness and function on expedition type trips. But like many others, I can attest to the abilities of these trucks just as they come from the factory. Viva las Tacos!

Short of rigwelderstaco junk... the rest of the rigs posted here don't look anymore expedition worthy then my junk...
.....IMO an expedition rig is a single vehicle that is self contained and self sufficient to supply to the needs of the driver and/or passengers of said rig for long periods away from civilization where there is little to no opportunity to replenish supplies...
I have to agree with TacoDell....many of the rigs posted are just suspension & protection modified rigs....like mine.
They should not be posted here....more suited for the Garage Section.
When I think of an Expo Rig, I think of this from Adventure Trailers.
http://www.adventuretrailers.com/images/truckconv.png
or Wil, Stealth4x4, Arvin or Iggy's examples.
Now if you have a dedicated off-roading trailer like this...
http://www.adventuretrailers.com/images/1_yellow1.jpg
From Adventure Trailers...then those are good.
Or the build that SAR_Squid79 is conducting.
That is an excellent example of making of a Expo Vehicle.
So stop posting normal off-roading rigs.

Since half of the snorkel mafia :flipoff4: seems to think that an "expedition vehicle" is nothing more than a stock Tacoma with a flip-out platform upon which you can pitch a tent :lmao: (Stealth, I'm laughing at them, not you ;)...cuz I've considered something similar LOL), and the other half thinks an "expedition vehicle" needs portal axles and a spare helicopter...here are some arguments otherwise, and a couple shots of a really impressive overland build (not mine).

Note thirty gallons fuel, ten gallons water in the bed, fullsize spare, HiLift on right, shovel on left. Reconfigures for a pair of MTBs in the bed and cooler in the cab. Note everything is low profile (ie it does not scream I'M A GEARHEAD OF THE SNORKEL MAFIA), within the form of the truck (wind resistance about "stock"), and mounted low (decent CG, for a 6500# truck on 35" tires). Everything is lashed down tight. Any unnecessary weight is gone...the pics with the tailgate are earlier than the pics without. The pics with the CanBack are from an earlier phase where I was convinced that a proper build needed a canvas top with the sides rolled up, and a snorkel :flipoff4:. The CanBack weighs 80#, the tent weighs less than a tenth of that. At any rate, the CanBack is most useful for keeping snow and sand off everything, other than that, it's a dead weight I can't see through.
http://thumbnails4.imagebam.com/2346/14b90623455353.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/14b90623455353) http://thumbnails10.imagebam.com/2346/80369223453742.gif (http://www.imagebam.com/image/80369223453742)
Typical camp setup, and definitive proof that "overland equipped" is not measured by the height of your snorkel, but by whether your girlfriend can comfortably wash her hair, and how often.

Your snorkel, winch, lockers, sliders, skid plates, and other Snorkel Mafia gear will do you no good here. They are unnecessary, and if you're not carrying a marine cooler full of ice (or a fridge), fifteen or so gallons of water, and a bunch of spare fuel, you're gonna have to hunt down a team of rock lizards to drag that brand new crawler box about a hundred miles across the desert to the nearest paved road, because you'll be pushing up cacti about half a day's walk from your dead truck.

Happy trails :flipoff4:
For the record, at the time those pictures were taken, my truck had a bone stock drivetrain, uniball arms and long SAWs, and long rear shocks. What made the trip easy was a well-organized load/lash system, easy access to the stuff we needed on a daily basis, and a workable division of labor over a roughly nine day trip (we stopped in a town near the middle for more ice & top off the tank, but that was it...with a fridge we would've pressed on, different menu & ice wouldn't have been required). Last trip I took was with a buddy in his extremely well-built Tundra, and it was the same stuff (load/lash, organization, tasking) that made the necessary stuff a breeze and allowed us so much more time to enjoy where we were.
The van is a Sportsmobile with air-locked 60s, Atlas TCase, 37" MT/KMs, solar panel, dirt bike, etc...see badgertrek.com.
Worthy of note--all that water, food and other stuff is a lot heavier than mountain bikes. If you gotta put anything on the roof, let it be your 25-30# mountain bike, not 8#/gallon water, a full cooler, or a packed duffel bag. Roof racks should be a last resort and only that--carrying a lot of crap on your head might make your "rig" look all Larry of Arabia, but you're more likely to go tits up, coming in hot to the wrong corner.
Don't go bitching about what is or is not an "expedition" build or I will post a picture of a near bone-stock older Toyota pickup with a sheep lashed on top of the bed load, and you can all try and identify what's not "expedition" about it LOL.
At any rate...how about this...if you wanna call it "expedition ready", post an action shot like Squid and Stealth :kewl:. I wanna see your campsite, your camp kit, how you secure your loads, what you carry in addition to a spare winch line, stuff like that.

Since half of the snorkel mafia :flipoff4: seems to think that an "expedition vehicle" is nothing more than a stock
I would have to agree with most everything you said, in that the smaller and lighter the gear, the less expedition like accouterments one needs. I can live easily out of a backpack for days and do not need a refrigerator and all that. I carry a lot of stuff for the truck, parts, water, fuel and tools and fit all of that into the bed with room to spare. If I need two spares, I hang on more off my trailer hitch. My personal gear takes up just a little bit of space. I go all over, where I can and yet have a roll up bed cover that means everything has to be no more than 15” high. My truck does not look “expedition” but I bet I can keep up with a lot of folks who think their’s does but don’t go anyplace.

I can personally vouch for his trailer being stout, well built and really something very well made. It rolls around nicely behind his rig and could be taken darn near anyplace. Hell of a nice thing there, and no one would guess it was home made. Nice!!!

It did as well as I expected.
I pretty much beat the piss out of it this weekend (at least it felt that way). I almost dumped it on its side once, and hit a lot of rough spots in the trail faster than I should have. It rode, pulled, and tracked great. It seems to be very tough, and soild!
I think it could probably benefit from a set of shocks, and I need to revise the way I have my gear organized and secured. My system works GREAT and has been proven time & time again when loading everything in the truck bed, but the trailer is a WHOLE different story.
I got lots of attention and quite a few compliments from others we encountered on the trail, and the Rangers.

Thanks for thinking my rig is expo ready....
I still think I have some things I need to make it considered an ExpoV..
1) Dedicated off-road tires/wheels
2) 2nd battery
3) winch
4) 2nd gas tank on the truck.
5) Storage containers or a trailer to go off road.
Pretty much in that order.
I have camping gear, when I was hiking/camping in the Apps.

Nathan, you're GTG for the most remote parts of North America with what you have, and a buddy in a second truck. The most remote parts aren't necessarily the hardest trails.
Storage containers are a big one for sure! Or at least a way to secure what you have, without bungee cords or duct tape. Rubbermaid containers are great...Pelican cases not necessary. Anything you can seal and lash down is good enough. The first long trip I did, everything was stored in big Rubbermaid containers. Nothing was lashed down very well, but it was relatively easy to clear out the bed of the truck, everything fit under the the truck, and we camped under the CanBack. I realized it was a pain in the ass to load/unload every night, and worse on the trail with everything banging around in the bed. At least NATO cans will handle Elephant Hill even if they're bouncing around on their sides, barely tied to anything...we ran EH as a shakedown for the Maze, and learned a lot about how not to pack. With the right lashing, the same stuff carries just fine.
I'm headed toward Pelican cases and RTTs, but they're not necessary, only a refinement of Rubbermaid and ground tents. Remember it's less about the gear...
CV, that second truck is easier to judge as getting closer to being "expedition ready"...I'm judging only because the spare & jack are easy to reach, but aren't taking up valuable cargo space which will be needed for fuel, water, and whatnot.
Like I said before, I wanna see fewer "wheeling" pictures and more shots of people's cargo systems and camp setups. This thread's already shown anybody can throw a snorkel or an RTT on a truck and call it "expedition", show me the setups in use on a long trip or in camp, not a weekend run or in the driveway.

I purchased 4 of these Tough Boxes from Home Depot. They were $18 each and have a 27 gallon capacity. The label says it can hold up to 700lbs. I use two for the majority of my camping equipment, another for fluids, tow straps, cables and another for spare parts. I plan on buying maybe two more.
These are stackable right side up or upside down. The lids on them are just as sturdy. I hold the boxes down using racheting tie downs. I loop the tie downs through the holes along the lip of the lid/box.

Watch the point loads on those :p. I'm pretty sure that's what your old front diff was shipped in (to Jon?), then I had it, and at some point the bottom cracked...tho I dunno if it was from oil contamination weakening the plastic, or some pointy part of the diff sitting on it...

Those tough boxes look pretty nice. We have been using WallyWorld "Action Packer" boxes like the one shown in the first image on my post at the end of p2 of this thread, but they don't interlock when you stack them, so if you go two boxes high they slip around. Beneath our bed cover tonneau thing, there's only enough depth for one high anyway. Mel just refers to the largest one we use as "the black box." It's a permanent feature of our gear. They come in different sizes and "nest" together to take up less space in the garage when your trip is over. And even in the sub-zero cold you can still toss them around and they don't get brittle and break, which is a plus.
Whatever works, I don't think one is that much better than another as long as you get the thicker darker plastic. Storage containers are a great solution though for modular gear storage. But if you use several of the same size and color boxes, you gotta make sure you grab the right one when you head out on a trip. "John, you grabbed the wrong box!" :buttkick: We only use one of each size so we don't have that problem any more. We used some cheaper tupperware type ones in the past which were great because you could see through them in a stack of multiple boxes and make sure it contained the gear you wanted without opening the lid, but the sun degraded the plastic leading to breakage, and when they got cold the slightest impact would shatter them. But the thicker darker plastic boxes seem to hold up well. Our Action Packers have been with us for about 8 years worth of trips and are still stout. None of the others we tried lasted that long.
We like to mix a combination of hard cases for stuff like camera gear that needs a little more protection, and soft duffel bags so that we can make maximum use of the space we have while packing up. Too many hard cases leaves a lot of lost space in between and around the boxes unless the whole system is really well designed and planned. But with some hard cases and soft bags together, you can really stuff things into the nooks and crannies and use up every last bit of space if you need to.
On the Oaxaca trip, we had to pack for 3 months and still leave the back seats clear and save room in the bed for two more large backpacks because we were meeting friends down in Oaxaca City for two weeks out of the trip. So we not only had to pack for ourselves, but save room for them. Four in a Double cab plus gear for that long is do-able, but you have to get creative and leave a lot of stuff at home. When space gets that valuable, you start to look at every little bit of usable area, and too many hard cases can leave a lot of unusable space unless you wanna start stuffing your dirty underwear in between the boxes.

Yea seriously, if you can insure all your goodies I definitely would! The guy who rolled my truck was considerate enough to shell out some cash which helped with the loss of all my aftermarket stuff. Trying to keep this rig cleaner than my last, probably just sliders, supercharger, and maybe a rear bumper eventually. It goes everywhere I need it to!

Yea, we start in 4x4 tech and the rest of the forum. I just think the expo tech should be more than just camping, we all have trucks and 90% of us do camping trips, but we all know that an expo vehicle is more than a truck with a lift and tires.

Honestly, it's probably more hardcore to go offroading in a stock truck and trust it not to break than in a highly modded one. While reading through this thread, I'm reminded of some of the early days of off-roading and looking at old pictures of vehicles from the early part of last century on the side of the path on the Rubicon and other trails where today's off-roaders claim they need at least 38" tires, major suspension work, superchargers, etc. Those old guys traveled an amazing amount of places and would probably laugh their asses off at some of our rigs and how much money we spend on them.
My old truck was basically stock except for the suspension because reliability was my biggest concern- I had to drive it to work when I wasn't playing with it. I also traveled alone most of the time (something most folks won't do, the "experts" tell you not to do, etc), taking a month off each year to crisscross the country to see and do what I could in between- all while living out of the back of the truck. Shorter trips of a week or less were also done several times a year. To me anyways, that's an American expedition; I'm living out of and with my vehicle for an extended period of time while seeing new (to me) places and taking as many dirt roads as I can in between. Maybe "Adventure Vehicle" would be a better term?
I'd also go so far as to say expo has more to do with a skills set than the vehicle itself. I've seen some old guys go places in old 2wd pickups that a lot of the guys on here would probably think twice about driving. I'd say it includes such things as basic field repairs, self extrication (safely and correctly) from various situations, navigation, camping, cooking, first aid, fire building, etc.
I posted this in another thread, but I think it fits here too:
You can tell who here hasn't been in third world countries where few vehicles are modified but take more of an everyday beating than most of the trucks on this forum ever will. People sometimes forget that most of the world doesn't have a road network like we do and just getting to town can be a rougher trip than some of our purposeful off-road trips. They routinely overload their vehicles (often cheap eastern-bloc or econo European cars) with both people and supplies. They carry livestock in the trunk, etc. According to some here, my father's Land Rover when he was in Sudan (he's a geologist) wouldn't count because it was stock, but he carried extra water, fluids, tools, etc. Maybe the damage from a pissed off baboon trying to rip the top off would make it count?
Jimmy Buffet was asked where Margaritaville was and he said it's any place you want it to be, it's a state of mind.
There aren't many places left unexplored these days- just unexplored by us.

For me, I wanted a vehicle that was off-road capable, but could still do good on long distance highway trips. For example this Christmas we drove from San Francisco CA to Portland OR. Then upon returning to CA, we loaded up the trailer and drove to near Las Vegas NV and set up base camp for a little over a week. While in NV we explored over 500 miles of mostly dirt two tracks and rarely saw more than 3 vehicles in the back country each day. I often travel without a 2nd vehicle (not by choice, but when you do long trips you can't always find a second vehicle that has the time to do the same trip) so reliability and self extraction is a must.

Thanks Guys.
The map monitor is an XENARC 700IDT. A little small, but the best thing about it is that it fits in a regular 1-DIN dash radio slot and folds away so it is out of sight when not in use. Picture below of it folded away:
http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/trkimages/B.JPG
I have it plugged into a regular laptop under the seat and use either the touch screen or an IR keyboard with joystick for input. I use National Geographic’s Topo map program for back country roads and Delorme’s Street Atlas for the highway.
The kitchen sink is a Coleman Exponent Outfitter Camp Kitchen. It folds up quickly and compactly and is light. That and a Campmate kitchen, pictured below:
http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/trkimages/camp/trcmp13.JPG
combined two Rubbermaid bins and a cooler fit nicely in the bed of the truck with just enough space for chairs and some wood.
Nope, no snorkel for me. Maybe someday, but low on the priority list. In the desert I rarely hit deep water, and when I do it is moving to fast anyway.
Outstanding rig.
Needs more SNORKEL.
Don't feel diminished that some might have you believe that you aren't REALLY expeditionary because you are not doing what you are doing (rather elegantly) on a different continent.
I don't think the task is to train to be miserable (oo-rah) but to enjoy some remarkable landscapes and exciting journey's. Great locations - you're setting the standard for domestic expeditionary builds.

I've actually taken mine as far as I'm planning on taking it, as far as being geared for hard core trails & rock crawling, and have now been focusing a lot on adding more expeditionary features to it. I use my rig as a daily driver, mild trail rig, hard core rock crawler, long-range across-country travel, camping, etc.
So I'll be lurking around more on this side of the board and asking questions ;)............
I had a smart ass comment ready until I realized you drive the UA tundra. Fscking badass rig man.

Thanks, here it is in it's present form - trying to get it geared up for our Moab run now. After 7 yrs I've finally got it pretty much dialed in for anything, rides down the interstate smooth at 75 MPH, brakes work awesome, steering feels like my '08 Tundra, and it's built like a damn tank now.............

Ever since I saw that Tundra here on TTORA and then in 4WDTO, I have loved how it was thought out and built up.
I can not wait to see what plans you may or may not have for expedition type trips.
Custom bolt on cargo carrier containers?
Custom overland trailer?
The possibilities are endless!

I'm thinking about making a slide in/bolt in shelf that would sit directly over the top of my spare tire to carry my tube doors and additional gear. Once I get my water can mounted back there this weekend I will start trying to figure out how to fab up the shelf. I've also been studying those military style trailers a lot lately, it would be sweet to have a tag behind to store extra gear in that could also handle the off road stuff well........

Have you thought about doing half/tube doors and then using some canvas, custom make a cover that could be zippered/button on to cover the openings? A friend of mine had this and it was pretty good set-up. This would help so, you don't have to remove your doors and store it.

For the long interstate travel I would rather run the factory doors - safety & comfort reasons. But for shorter trips, having optional covers would allow me to leave the factory doors at home.....

About a dozen of us went, but only 2 of us "self-deployed" and I was the only one that "redeployed." Nine days and about 4,500 miles total including offroad and re-routing due to a blizzard on the return home. The other rigs were trailered or folks from different parts of the country met us there. We went there and back because we wanted to maximize the 4.5 days we had available to do as much of Moab as posssible.
However, we are considering the next trip will do just what you suggested - travel, stop at a place and wheel, travel, and repeat.
By your sig your truck isn't much different that mine - you're ready for Moab now. I'm open/open IFS and I made it up some pretty challenging trails with a few prudent bypasses since I knew I'd have to drive it home.

Ive done new 5 speed, dual optimas with a hellroaring isolator, OME lift, fully baselined, ARB front, Solid rock rear, damplifier interior sound deadening, new seats, redundant guage. Still some bugs to work out but 185k on body 2f has about 25k miles...original miles. Planning a continental divide trip summer of '10.

Well to a point I agree with you, But every one has to start some how. Even camping and sleeping in the bed of their trucks. So what you are saying is, That those who use to go on expedition on horses were better then those who use's donkeys or mules?
Then really there should be nothing but Land Cruisers and specifically the diesel ones found overseas.

March 08 Camino Rio Pilon
Second run through another trial about 50 miles East of Monterrey off a Hwy towards Rayones NL. We followed the trail for about 15 miles until we came to the Hwy again. River goes through the canyon and there were several crossings we had to take in order to continue. The scenery was beautiful. The trail continued but we were all out of time. We didn't take too many pictures on this run b/c we were too busy enjoying it.

Feb 09 Camino Huasteca
This trial is very close to the first but a little further down the mountain road. Trail begins off a dirt road from a small village behind the famous Cola de Caballo in Monterrey. We were planning to go through the over 30 miles of canyon trails on this one but I spun one of my axle splines on this one. Next time I am taking a whole week off to finish at least one of several of these trails trough the mountains.

did you end up regearing your vehicle and how much of a difference did it make if you did?
Also, doesnt that tent rack make the vehicle feel top heavy and a negative when offroad due to the higher centre of gravity?
Why didnt you mount the rack base a little lower or did you want to retain vision through the rear window?

Well here is an update of my Expo rig...
Camping Lab Rtt
Baja Rack
Engel Fridge
Drawer system
HAM 2 meter Yaseu 7800 radio
CB
Tools
Often carries chainsaw, all my gear for camping, exploring in remote places.
It is beefed up to prtect it and has taken me to many great places though National Forest. I can be self sufficient for a week easily. Got 5 extra gallon of gas, enough space for food, drinks, everything. So it is MY expedition rig. Jope to go explore the OBX this fall for a good week and anyone knows that where I am going there is no suplies on the island that I am going so sorry if it does not count as a expo rig to some of you. Will have shower and awning and new tires and shocks by then. Will never make it to Africa or Austrailia but I am planning to hit Moab/ Colorado next year and will be out 5-7 days at a time on my own living out of my vehcle.

All good stuff here, I recently changed directions with my truck and decided to go with a more expedition build since the wife and kids dont really enjoy bouncing around on the rocks and bumps unless there is a worthy destination.
Recently built a rack that fits over the bestop.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a23/dannyboysfc/DSC01136.jpg
built a rear bumper a few months ago
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a23/dannyboysfc/106.jpg
Other than that I have firestone airbags in the rear for load carrying and towing, OME standard duty 884s in the front since its a 4 cyl and I dont plan on permanently attatching a winch up there. The winch is on a cradle that goes in the reciever. I ve got a few lights here and there. Much much more to come and I plan on learning as I go, but in the next few years I plan on touring most of the US, parts of Mexico, Canada, and Alaska.

Question for the 05+ Tacoma's like above
For those of you who have mounted or custom built canopies/frame for RTT to the bed rails, how has the composite bed rail cap held up to having a load on it? Any cracks?
How is it secured?
Drilled and bolted? or clamped to the inner bed rail system?
