Bar none, one of the videos any NEWBIE should review a few times before any off-road adventure.

Bill burke's "Getting UNStuck" is worth owning.

It could be....I had a reason to post it here and not there...but for now, i can not remember why.
Must be my ol' age. ;)

If a MOD, wants to move it there...not a problem.

Thanks for the compliment...
I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
I worked as an Automotive Safety Engineer for about a decade.
Now I am a Senior Quality Engineer for New Product Development and our Engineering Lab.

As for affording....be patient and save your pennies. ;)

Ah i was going to school for electrical engineering but it was too expensive to live/drive there, and my local university doesn't have their eng. school up and running yet so i changed computer networking for the time being.

I bought that video when I first started to hit some more serious trails and along with that started to get stuck and break more junk... I have the uncommon-common sense factor working for me but sometimes my friends do not... I sat down after getting it and made some of my buddies watch it while we ate some snacks.

It starts off pretty dry, but that's just Burke's style I think. After a little while the guys started getting into it and learned a lot. The thing about doing trail stuff is, your friends have to be willing to do things safely and correctly too, or you'll be fixing their junk (like what always seems to happen to me) or doctoring them up...

The problem IMO kinda comes down to this... Most of my friends are just like myself. An A type personality that likes to lead, not follow, likes to do stuff a certain way, etc... And to their credit they have served in some harsh countries just like myself and already done some major off roading as a whole, but just in a different environment with different (usually a lot less) equipment. You can't just start giving orders to people on the trail when the shit has already gone wrong somewhere. Some people are just gonna do what they want to do...

After spending years on a special ops team with 10 guys who act just like I do, well I realize you have to go about stuff a different way sometimes. Instead of me out there telling them "my way is not only the correct way, but also a better way", watching little videos like this one actually gets some people to listen.

Anyways, just my :2cents:

WHAT A GREAT DVD!!!

I already knew and practice a lot of the stuff he talked about. I wish every 4-wheeler / Off-Roader had this DVD and practiced such safe, and responsible recovery techniques.

There is a chapter on the DVD where - before he actually starts demonstrating winching techniques, he goes to the Superwinch factory and explains how a winch works, and then there's a big part about safely operating the winch, and communications. My sister thought that part was dumb and boring but I explained to her how dangerous a winch and recovery situation can be, and how stupid and unsafe some people are. Some people know little to nothing about recovery, but think a winch looks cool and makes them invincible. They just bolt the winch to their rig, and down the trail they go...

It made me feel good about myself that I have NEVER seen this DVD before, yet I have EVERY SINGLE piece of recovery gear that Bill Burke recommends and carries. The only thing that he has in his kit, that I don't - is a Pull-Pal Earth Anchor. ...and at $500 a pop, I guess I'm just going to have to use my poor-man's Pull-Pal, and bury my spare tire!

I highly recommend this DVD. Both newbies and veterans can learn some good lessons.

I totally agree Jamie, about every off-roader should own and understand this video.
I did not know the hand signals for winching...one of many things I learned.

The funny parts was when he was explaining tire chains and he kept excusing himself for being out of breath, while up at 12,000 ft in Colorado.

Oh yeah, my in-laws bought it for my birthday last week. Very cool gift.

Just ordered this DVD. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I imagine it will be very helpful before I get my first winch.

I thought it was pretty good overall, but a little slow at times. It really reinforced what I already knew, and had some nice tips and tricks I didn't. Like the sand carpet, cheap and easy way to get unstuck.
