Originally I thought this to be a transmission problem, but now I'm pretty certain that it is not.
Symptoms:
On flat ground - truck feels fine. Once it builds up RPMs transmssion shifts fine and normal.
On the slightest incline, the truck has absolutely no power, and seems like it can't build RPM's. On a 4% - 6% grade, the truck can barely pull itself - maxes out at about 5 - 8 mph, 1800 RPM in 1st gear.
Drove fine on Friday afternoon. Didn't drive it all weekend. Monday morning this was going on. Just spent the last couple of hours trying to troubleshoot . . . can't find anything out of the ordinary.
It does not feel like the trans is slipping or anything. Engine feels smooth, but definitely like it's not pulling.
Parked, I can rev the engine and it runs and revs normal.
A side note is that when I'm sitting at a stop sign with my turn signal on, my voltage gauge, and RPMs start to dance, and it feels like it's running rough. ...only with the turn signal on.

I'm not at all familiar with your year rig.. however, make sure all your ground bonds are good. You may have an electrical ground issue which "may" in turn be giving the controller issues (I assume it has one being a '90)... just a wild guess.
I had an 88 FJ-62 back in the day. It would periodically slightly backfire. Then I destroyed the alternator in the mud. I had one put on at the dealer at the time and they said the back fire would go away after the excess fuel burned off the cat. The alternator wasn't giving the truck hot enough spark???? That is that they said anyhow. It did go away and the truck ran better. I also fabricated my own cold air intake from the plenum to the fender taking out the old restrictive air box. That along with cutting off the cats took me from 10 MPG to almost 15 overnight with 33x9.50's on a truck with 225,000 miles. It also felt like it had tons more power with those mods.
Judging by the gold taco STILL sitting in the same place you saw it last, you don't want my help!
but is it running rich? Sorry had to throw that one in there. good luck Jamie, have you taken any readings yet? what is your fuel pressure like? No need in telling you to start with the basics and work your way up with your diagnoses. Are you getting any back fires or missing?
on those trucks, it could be a multitude of things...
Like everyone said, replace your fuel filter first. After that, just to be sure, start replacing your vacuum lines one by one. (I know what your thinking, crazy huh?)
You would be surprised at what a small vacuum leak can do to an 60-62 series LC, trust me...ive had my headaches with my 60, although, you have a totally different engine then me.
I've been out of town - in Gulport Mississippi, to be exact - for the last few weeks, and I won't be back to San Diego for a few more weeks.
When I get back, I'm planning on replacing the fuel pump & Fuel Pressure Regulator, and I hope <fingers crossed> that that fixes her.
If anyone wants to volunteer to help - PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! I'll provide beer and food, but I think it's going to be a bear to replace that fuel pump.
I would be willing to help. I dropped the tank on my Taco and it was a bitch! I would not say that I am a pro but I have tools, like to wrench, a garage (if you need it) and a thirst for beer. :xbeer3:
Im going with an electrical issue. if your gauges start to dance with the t/s on them most likely a ground issue. as far as the no power thing, Im guessing EGR prob, its opening to early you can test by plugging off the egr vacuum line with a bolt or screw. if its not that then back to the electrical possibly the ignitor module and yes those are kinda expensive.
Well . . . I'm glad I decided just to take it into the shop!
The problem was something that I probably would have NEVER found on my own. The problem was the distributor shaft. The gear and pin at the bottom of the distributor shaft were totally worn out, and the engine could not hold timing. At idle it was okay, but as soon as you tried to increase the RPMs the timing would just advance and retard like crazy...
I should get it back from the shop this afternoon.
glad to hear you are making progress on your issue. I too followed suit and took my truck to the dealership over the weekend. After the stealership having it for 30 minutes today, they are saying my issue is with the belt/tensioner allowing slack which is basically stopping the supercharger from performing.
We shall see when I pick it up and fix the tensioner.
Glad to hear it worked out for you, and at least you have a bunch of maintenance items out of the way that is a super sharp looking rig.
