Valve Adjustment - 94 3.0L 4Runner - Who can do this?

Hey Guys -

I need to adjust the valves on my Runner. They are getting REALLY bad. Is it hard to do, or am I being a pussy? I've built motors, and can do pretty much anything on a vehicle, but I have never messed with the heads. If I were to hire someone - what should I look for as far as price goes? It taps really bad when it is not under pressure - leading me to believe that it's the valves, and not a rod knock...and we've driven it for about 8000 miles, and it just keeps getting worse and worse.

Any thoughts/advice/good mechanics, etc?

I'd be interested in this answer too, as I always thought the valves on the 3.0 were self adjusting, like the 3.4. If they aren't, it would be good to know how, since my bro's truck could likely use a valve adjustement since its just about at 200k.

Dont think either motor has self adjusting valves. believe they both use shims wich makes it a pita, especially if you dont have a large assortment on hand when you do the adjusting.

3.4 is self adjusting. At least that's what we were told at the dealer.

I know myself and some others would also be interested in adjusting our 3.0 valves....Valve adjusting party anyone? :saw:

Everything i am reading suggests that they are the shim style just like the 3.0 I dont know how they would make them self adjusting. the shim style need to be adjusted far less frequently than the old post/nut style on the 22r.

Brian, care to clear this up?
