hey i have a 71 fj40 and have been contemplating tackling the steering issues for years, and have decided to finally go for it. the box that is on there is believed to be an aftermaket one(detailed pics tomorrow) and the bearings are so shot in it that the wheel has 3/4 of a turn of play. the bracket that it is mounted to is not factory.
i plan on replacing the box but want to go with a power steering setup. so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the steering shaft size and splines are? what are popular power steering boxes?
will post detailed pics tomorrow after i take the bumper off at work, might need help identifying box. sorry about crappy pics, all i have tonight.
thanks in advance.
took bumper off today at work and got a few pics:
top down numbers on case read LB-1.83F and tag reads:
LB1
34790
input shaft appears to be 2-3"in length
shot from front
box has 3 mounting points to bracket
really need some help on this one guys, would prefer to replace with a power unit that requires no modification. i could however change around the mounts if i had to but do not want to mess with the steering shaft. i would really appreciate any input on this. thanks in advance
I was about to comment that a saginaw box works very well when converting the steering on these.
On my 71, the gear box is in …well a box. yet to be mounted to the vehicle. I plan to rebuild it, and if need be afterwards, just go with a saginaw which should be easy enough to attach to high steer.
thanks for all the useful info, i was planning on doing a saginaw box from the start. i was just exploring the idea of doing a bolt-on deal that required no fab, or switching input shaft or pitman arm, as i rely on the fj these days since the 4runner cannot currently be registered. guess i will just have to remove the box to get a count of the splines and reinstall until i can get a replacement. once again thank you all for the input.
In a lot of cases, a mini-truck PS will bolt right on, and will be plenty strong if you're running 35's or smaller. Depends whether you care about staying with Toyota parts or not...
had a local gear box specialist come and take a look; turns out it is a saginaw 525 box. he is hooking me up with a reman box on monday. on the other hand he told me that he could get me a direct bolt-on replacement power unit with new pressure, return lines, pitman and a steering adapter for $135. i do not want to modify my current bumper. he also mentioned that going to power was going to destroy my knuckles?
