Anyone out there have a stock instrument cluster with the Tach in it for a 22re? What is your red-line. I have been getting a few different #'s from different people. some it's 4800, some it's 3800. I know that the 22re is NOT a high reving motor and that all of the tourque is achieved at the 2500 range.
I was just curious because I ran it up to 4800 the other day and had a little dark smoke. Couldn't repeat it but I don't need to be ruining the motor.

My 20R is 4800...and I get it there a lot... Considering mine is an older, carbureted smaller engine, I would assume the 22RE can hit those revs as well

my 22re will hit like 5.5k
I believe factory red line is 5250, but after 4800 power drops off a cliff.

did you figure out your burning coolant issue?
Sounds like you're having a hell of a time lately.
Think he just turned the bolts another 1/8th turn and that fixed it for now.

NOPE it comes apart on Sunday. damn thing is running HOT too. I think the T-stat is going south. It runs fine for a while and then every now and then it gets hot.
I was taking it to 4500 today to see what it would do, the power above 4k is night and day, and it got hot fast. I have never had it above 4k so I never really got into the peak power of the 22re all 120 squirrels.
I know that there has to be an air bubble in there somewhere but I can't seem to get it out. I have this hose idea that would hook up to the flush point on the heater hose, I hope it works.
I have never been able to get over 20mpg with it either (cept coming down Loveland pass anyone can do that though). I will be pulling the cam and replacing it with the stock one. See if that helps.

At last years CO4RJ, I was running in 2nd gear at 5K (probably 35-40mph) up 285 from Johnsons Village to the turnoff to head to the campsite. My 22RE is fresh (maybe 1000 on the rebuild) but I couldn't pull that hill in 3rd gear with the 39.5's. My brother in his YJ on 37's and a 4 liter was impressed that I could even do that speed up that hill :D Just wait until I add a cage and some bumpers and a winch, I'll be running it at 5K in 1st gear just to make it up that hill :D
I didn't want to run it pass 5K though, it sounds loud at 5K
Sounds to me like air in the cooling system like you are suspecting. Usually tstats fail open and over cool.

5250 is it.
I've run the thing at 4500 for long periods of time. It does just fine.
You can run them up there for a while without problems. A buddy of mine had 4th go out in his 2wd 4spd, and he drove that thing at like 5k every time he was on the highway for 6 months. Even made a trip to cali and back, and he still drives that motor today.

Try again there college boy - 5800
Yeah yeah, depends on how you look at it. i consider hitting the red to be past it, so i would actually call it 5600, but either way that is way past the power of a 22re

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the motor is going to fly apart at 4600 rpm. man that just makes me cringe.:scared:
I have always felt the same way.

Nice save attempt there ...
In the end, it has a rev limiter, so does the redline really matter?

its the amber lights and a crappy camera that make them seem the same. My carb motor made a good amount of power to redline but the re's dont. Im going to miss reving the hell out of the motor gear after gear to get up to speed.

No, I'm laughing that you KNOW you are color blind and yet are senile enough to wonder what we're talking about.
