Automatic transmissions have been proven to be great tranny's for wheeling. They are easy to use and theres no having no dealing with burnt clutches. However, earlier auto trans's for the Toyota's had a starvation issue when at extreme angles and they would tend to over heat from time time. Heat is not a good thing for automatic Transmissions.

Enter the new generation of auto tranny's from Toyota. The a750f transmission found in the '05+ Tacomas, 4th gen 4Runners, and FJ Cruiser's is one heck of a tranny. Gone are the days of starvation while sitting on that 9 foot waterfall and they are not as prone to over heating like the earlier models are. One other side bennifit to these transmissions is that although they are a fully automatic transmission, they can be shifted manually and they hold the gear you shifted into.

But like any piece of machinery that use's fluid to keep it cool, this transmision is no different and in a 4wd vehicle that sees slow going for long periods of time while in lo gear that situation is not kind to the tranny.

I wanted to see how my transmission was doing so I decided to get a Dakota Digital trans temp gauge that would go along with my volt meters.

Since I changed the transfer case to a fully manual one from an FJ Cruiser I could now get rid of the 4wd switch sitting on the dash. That would also be the perfect place to put this gauge so that I could see it at a glance.
This is the first installment of how I hooked it up.

First, here is the 4wd switch that I took out of the dash.

Then I needed to find the cover plate for that section from a prerunner. You can find them in the junk yard or you can go to Toyota and buy one.

Here is the gauge I will be using. It's a fully digital gauge and they are very accurate when used with Dakota digital's sending unit. You will have to wire it up yourself as these are professional series gauges. Not like the auto meters you get at pepboys.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee73/awsumdc/trans%20temp%20gauge%20install/DSC00482640x480.jpg

So here it is all wired up and ready to go into it's new home. I'll have the rest of the install for you next week.

Well, the Beast has seen some rough times and it's time to do some major work to it so where better to do it than the shop where it all started.

So it sits in the shop of DeMello-Offroad and it's going to have some major work done.

New Currie Iron Jock rear axle, three link system in the rear, Bigger brakes up front, a new DeMello front bumper and the bed area is going to be redone so that I can actually use it.
There will also be some body work done to clean up some of the scars it has and it'll get new graphics as well.

So follow along as we rebuild the Beast.

This is one of the reasons it's getting a new three link system. The track bar has tron off of the mount for the last time.

ouch!
I hope mine won't have any issues like that but with 3/8" a plate bracket welded to a 3/8" thick Diamond axle tube I don't think I will :D

You should be fine because of how yours is mounted.

Took the Beast out for a real test in Arizona.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgHeMpkLNZU

All the up grades worked better than we thought. the new front DeMello plate bumper allowed a better approach angle than before because of how tight it is to the front of the truck while still allowing for a winch. The new Currie Rock Jock has more clearence than the other axle and the three link rear suspension worked far better than the old leaf spring set up did. Without those three changes I would have never made it up that fall.

Wow, just wow! Your truck has been a favorite since I joined, it's really been cool to watch the progression of this beast and after catching up on the RST link, I can't wait to see what's next! There are a ton of builds out there but trucks like yours and Pepe's just take it to the next level, cheers to true talent! :xbeer1:

Thanks man. Thank you very much. Pepe and I love what we do and then we especially love to share it with friends and to help them do the same. Plus we get to meet great people along the way.
Thanks again
Wyatt
