There was a guy down the road that came to me one day and told me he had a couple motors. But they were in Bristow Oklahoma. Well yesterday we went to bristow and i pulled an 82 truck back for him in exchange for a motor. I thought i was gonna get it yesterday but alas that didnt work out. So i should get it sometime this week its out of an 87 but it isnt fuel injected but i can work on that! I also got an 82 straight axle that needs some work. Its complete on the passenger side but its missing the rotors out on the drivers side. I also got a timing and water pump cover. I gave him a set of stock 15.7s rims with tires in exchange for all this and he wanted to give me some money. I said hey i figure were square i had a half tank of gas when i left and i got a half tank now. (he bought gas) I think i came out good? I need to know what gears were in 82? My 86 has 410s.
I cleaned out the barn turned my truck around and used the tractor to pull the motor and im ready for a new/used heart for my toy! I Cant wait!

82 had 410 gears also
the 87 engine will work fine, pull the intake off and bolt your efi intake on

It's too bad I didn't know about this this morning. I just found two solid axle hub/rotor assemblies in my parts truck. I could've sold ya one cheap. Glad to hear you finally got a motor though!

I havent goten it yet but im ready for it!!! Sure i could use an extra hand and for now i might just leave the motor carb just to get it going agan then i might throw on the fuel injection. Could i do that glen? What will i have to do? Just not hook up the efi stuff?

It would probably be easier to just keep the efi if the truck's already ready for it. No sense in spending all that time trying to get the carb running right if you don't have to.

i agree with Aaron, just pull the efi intake off the old engine and lay it over on the inner fender and then pull the engine with the head still on out,
pull the intake off the new engine, stab it in and bolt up the efi intake, the engines are IDENTICAL

Thats a problem i have already had the efi stuff and head off the old motor months ago. I still cant seperate the head fromt the efi manifold i have all the bolts out and still im hung up on something i cant figure out. Ive beat on it and pryed on it but it wont come off and its been so long im not sure i remember how to put the efi back together!

Well finally i divorced the head from the efi manifold. Upon closer inspection to the tune of 30 minutes with it in my lap i discovered there was a bolt right next to the thermostat housing. But it wasnt a bolt with a metric or standard head nor was it torx or allen? Im not sure what it was but i had to take the fuel rail off to get a pair of vise grips on it. Is this normal? What is it supposed to be?

it supposed to be a large allen. replace it with a hex head bolt. makes it easier the next time around.

I got it! I got it! Its in the barn and im in process of anaylizing what all i need to do. I pulled the plugs and cranked it and i get air coming out and they all hit tdc. But when i get one revolution around it feels like it binds almost as if its compressing. But i have the spark plugs out? How is that possible? I pulled the timing cover and looked at the chain and it looks fairly new in there. The top of the head has wear marks from when the timing chain was bad but its got new guides in there now. I plan on pulling the pan and looking at bottom end. Whats the best way to get the manifold and all that off of a carb manifold?

just unbolt the intake from the head, you will need to remove the water pipe from the center of the head, this is incorporated into the efi intake

Ok but how do i get the bolts out tucked behind the carb?

Iv'e been fairly busy but found time to take new motor apart and put it back together with efi on. And stabbed it in. I need help wrestlin my tranny! I fought it for nearly 4 hours last night and killed a half a bottle of rum by the time i was done. I also need help getting it wired. I had liquid motivation taking it apart and its been so long i cant remember how the wiring harness went around all the efi crap. Im almost there i just need a hand.
