: scan tool recommendations

I've got a ScanGaugeII in the FJ, but it's hard-mounted and I want another that I can use on both the Yota and the Saab. I'm toying with upgrading the ScanGauge for the FJ and putting the older version in the Saab, but am also considering a portable tool for more diversity. Any recommendations?

I have seen some good reviews on this one on other forums... actually maybe is was on the main TTORA forum.

When you first posted this though, I was thinking to myself, how is it that you have your SG hard mounted, that you could not use it another vehicle. Mine is what I would call hard mounted, but if I were to get another cable from SG, I could hook it up to another vehicle without any real issues. The real issue is getting the stinking Velcro to let go to move it. :D

Hey Eric, what is it that DonG has? He has something on his laptop and can scan any Toyota's after 1995?

"Hard-mounted" might be a misnomer, but it is bonded to the dash with 3M super-sticky stuff

I looked at a second cable, but then decided I didn't want to have to play the game.

I considered just buying the new upgraded one and putting the older one in the Saab, but they want $170  for it??!!

Really you need to narrow down what you are looking for. Do you want a "code checker"? Would you want data list/stream? Would you like to see enhanced OBD2 data list?

What is your end usage/goals? How much do you want to spend?

I'd get somthing like this

Thank you Brian,

I would like to be able to see the code, the definition and be able to clear it. I'd rather not have to drag around my laptop and I don't have a Palm/PocketPC. Something that would fit in the tool box and not too much money.

I'm not hip to the jargon, so please educate me:

"Code Checker"
Data list/stream
Enhanced OBDII
CAN

I looked at a CenTech at Harbor Freight that was $100, but they wouldn't let me take it out of the box and posted an armed guard next to me while I read the back of the box...

I'd just get this, a "code reader" with no special skills.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=94169

The other words like CAN (controller area network) are for more advanced functions. If you only looking to check codes and clear you don't need and CAN, enhanced OBD, or data list.

data list, if it is Enhanced OBD toyota specific will give you all the sensor readings and calculated readings used for diagnosis. If you know what all those number mean it could be helpfull.

enhanced OBD is just more code definitions and extended user data.

Those Scangauge II's look pretty damn cool, just watched a video showing some of the functions. Is it worth the ~$160 or just more of a gimmick type deal? Do they only sell them online or can you buy locally?

When I bought mine I had the money to burn, so it was cool. I would like some of the added functionality with the upgraded model, but I'm not willing to pony up the $170 again and I'm too lazy to send mine in to be re-flashed.

I primarily use mine to gauge fuel economy (when you see that you're getting 1.5mpg when you stand on it, you don't...) and it helped debunk the CAI myth. If you're a geek and like to see info that is interesting to note while you're driving and might be helpful in diagnosing a problem, you'll like it. My favorite thing is the scantool function and the ability to clear and store codes for little stuff so you don't have to worry that the check engine light isn't just a bad O2 sensor reading versus a major engine failure...

I am pretty geeky in that sense.....lol

So there are 2 versions of the Scanguage II, or is it just the firmware?

Who has the newest ones and the best prices? Something i might consider down the road when i have some spare cash.

Thanks for the info.

Just the one version. I could get the firmware upgraded for like $30 and shipping, but I'm lazy!

I believe there is only the one online source, but have seen the occasional group buy through the blue room.

No, no gimmick. It will tell you all kinds of things about your truck on a real time basis. Is it worth it? I think so. If nothing else, keeping up a display of my Average Fuel Economy in real time, make me keep an eye on how I am driving. In addition to all the other stuff it does, it will read codes, if you throw one, and also lets you clear them.

As to prices and where, I have never seen them in a store. The two main places to get them are here for 169.95

http://www.scangauge.com/

Or here for 189.95 with mounting kit for above the mirror (which is what I have).

http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=mgt&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=882137477&Count2=799277901&CategoryID=109&Target=products.asp

The owner of the first link above is a vendor on TN (called 3n1 (go figure :) )) and he occassionally does group buys on them.

The one disappointment I have with mine is that after 2 years they have not figured out an xguage code so you can get your tranny temp.

I'm going to take a guess. One of the readouts you can program is for Horsepower and then, of course, Fuel Economy. CAI does not really make a difference to either.

Unfortunately mine does not have the firmware to calculate HP, but more to the point the aftermarket CAIs claim to dramatically reduce intake air temps, which is supposed to be the rationale behind better combustion, acceleration (HP) and fuel economy. The after market CAI I had dropped intake air temps by maybe 1-2 degrees and made zero difference in fuel economy. It made the motor resonance louder and offered some psychological "seat of the pants" acceleration. Intake temps were 12-15 degrees over ambient with the OEM, they dropped to 10-15 over ambient with the CAI. When I put the snorkel on with the OEM intake, intake temps dropped to 1-2 degrees over ambient, so perhaps a true "cold-air intake." :2cents:

I'm sure there are lots of other ways I could use the scangauge, but I;m only an amateur geek :D
