Who has an aftermarket air intake kit installed on a 3.4L Tacoma (cold air kit or whatever you want to call it)? I need some measurements.:D

*Can you tell me the OD measurement of the tube where the filter mounts on it?
*What about the ID measurement of the filter?
*Is the filter attached to the elbow with a hose clamp or some other means?
*What are the other dimensions of the filter?...is it conical or cylindrical, how long is it, etc?
*Is the elbow going to the throttle made of plastic or metal?
*What brand and model kit are the measurements for?...K&N FIPK, AFE, AEM, Kool-Vue, or other?

Pics are welcome, or if you're in the area, I can stop and take measurements myself. will buy beer. Thanks!

Thanks for any help you can give me.:D

Contact Yanman, i know he runs the K&N kit.

Thanks! It sucks they don't advertise the dimensional specs of any of these kits. Evven the K&N catalog.

i wouldnt run the k$n kti if soemone payed me! sucks in dirt and water decreases milage and i noticed absalutley no gains in power besides the noise it made, plus the way its mounted the sheild makes the filter pop off. when you take a hard bump, i was wheeling it in moab and then in idaho springs i noticed it had fallen off.... i was very pissed!

Spindleshanks is a huge fan of k&N... if he wants to run it, he can, leave him alone! :lmao:

Actually I know the opposite is true. I'm waiting to see what he's using this info for.

yea im curious too, i found the volant system was pretty good but for the cost of it i could trade in my kn and make like 15 bucks buy a factory system and get better mpg at 4.30 a gallon.... it made alot of sense! and when you see dirt going up the intake tube AFTER THE FILTER!!! it get me a lil worried

im very impressed with the facory box and its abilitys to get clean good air in thetube and also with the location of the pick up im impressed at how much water it doesnt suck in, after submerging my front end once or twice...

i will forever preech my hatred for the K$N that and topload spacers.....

I'm looking at retrofitting a different type of air filter because I don't trust the stock airbox. I like the way it intakes air from the fender, but I don't trust the seal between the air filter and the airbox. It's completely dependent on those cheesy little springs. Seems unnecessarily complicated.
I'd like to use a radial seal type Heavy Duty filter (this one fits late model Chevy trucks, it's the heavy duty version) :
http://www.wixconnect.com/images/filters/3398_1.gif
A larger filter holds more dirt, flows more air, and the radial design provides a better seal. It could even filter better. Combine that with the low-resistance of a polished aluminum intake elbow and the fact that I get air filters for free, and it's a win-win. Check out this deal for only $100:

The downside may be that I can't find an air filter that flows the same as the OEM Toyota filter. The stock air filter flows 350 cfm, but this Chevy filter only flows 275 cfm. I've got some more research to do.

That's why I need to know the dimensions of the intake tube on the aftermarket kits.

could Mr. Filter (you) come up with a heavy duty retrofit for my k&n POS? i like the straight flow intake tube but the water suckage, dirt flowage, and overall lack of balls of the k&n is dissapointing. got a heavy duty filter i could put in its place and keep the rest of the system?

If you are really just concerned about dirt getting by the seal, you could always run a bead of sensor safe sealant arount the filter befor each install.

Cool deal.. looking forward to what you come up with.

Suprised those GM filters dont flow more air than that.

Yeah, Ike, I'm surprised too. I'm really shocked at how much air the Toyota filter actually pulls.

And Kyle, I'm sure we could find a filter that would match up.

Yeah, thanks for crashing my party, Ike!:D You're probably right, but it would be worse getting flecks of silicone into your intake than anything else.

Hey,

this is the K&N kit I run in my Taco:

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=57-9015-1

and this is the filter:

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RC-4700

I hope this helps.

If you want me to go out and get some dims I can do that too, just got to remember to do it. :)

As fas as extra HP I get or loose, well thats all up for debate, here is a Dyno chart showing the HP gain:

http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/57-9015_dyno.pdf

I also had my Taco at a dealership shortly after I installed it and the technician told me that for what ever reason my truck had more get up and go because of it.

I'll let you guys believe it or not, I can't go back to the stock system because I don't have it anymore, and I don't feel like buying a new one from Toyota for $500, nor do I feel like scoping out junk yards.

Sweet, thanks yanman, that's just the dimensional specs I was looking for and couldn't find.
much appreciated.

I'll be damned, I can't find a filter with a similar sized flange to that K&N one! It's no accident either, I'm sure K&N planned it that way.

I am sure one exists, you could also go slightly diferent in the diameter of the tube.

spindleshanks
03-03-2009, 11:15 PM
I could vary the diameter by a half inch or so, or I could find a 3" ID adaptor and step it up to 4" or so. Anyway, I can't find a filter with suitable flow characteristics. Bah!

Just have them custom make one then.

I'm sure that this is going to make Jeremy shudder.....what better reason to post :p

My factory airbox and Wix filter is open to the inside of my fiberglass fender with nothing other than this screen to keep the big stuff out.

With the filter removed, you can compare what conditions are like on either side. That filter was in there for about six months. I wiped around the filtered area with my finger and got nothing. There are a few waterspots from years ago though.

Sometime I wonder if it isn't just kind of a hit and miss in terms of getting an airbox that seals well (or not).:2cents:
