Im working on putting my new motor in. Ive gotten it in and wired put the transmission on and got it ready to stab the distributor and put the battery in. I today tried to crank it by wrench to no 1 tdc and it wouldnt budge. It cranked freely on the engine stand and so i thought it was bound up at the transmission. I took the transmission off and it still wont crank. So now i sit here wondering what to do? Any ideas? Would the power steering and alternator belts being too tight affect anything? I just dont know so im gonna go get some liquid motivation for now and wait for somebody to say anything? I tried to find corys number and couldnt. Thanks in advance guys!

Hmmmm...

Have you done anything with the valves?
Have you pulled out the spark plugs and tried it without compression?
Have you taken off the accessories yet?

Try that, I would think.

Unhook the accessories and I bet it turns.....

I havent messed with it yet but before i do i have another question. What way does it crank? Clockwise or counter? I just wanna be sure. Im pretty sure its clockwise and i know if i didnt think about it too much i wouldnt question myself. But u know what happens when you second guess yourself.

what about your starter? does it crank no start? or does it not crank not start?

I havent even gotten that far yet. As of now the trannys off and of course the starter bolts to it. I took it off because it seemed to be binding somewhere in the driveline I put it in gear in hopes that it would make the flywheel move but seemed to only rock the motor back and forth. I need to get the motor to crank with a wrench so i can stab the distributor in. The last thing i need is to be cranking on the starter and it to be out of time and bend a valve. Or for it to break the starter or the flywheel. I have to get the motor to turn by hand before i take any chances.

I need more info. You said it turned over fine on the stand, but how complete was it at that time? Did you have the flywheel, spark plugs, crank pully, ect all bolted up and ready to drop in as a complete package, or was it just a short block. I recall interrearance issues with one of the motors I have built. My problem was one of the small bolts that hold the dust cover thingy to the back of the block, and the flywheel.

The only advice I can give you at with such little info is to think back at what u bolted to the longblock since the last time you turned the crank. I'm shure your answer will lie somewhere between that step and its current arangement.

I had the alternator and the exhaust manifold on the intake manifold on and i put the flywheel and the clutch on right before i dropped it in. Im gonna take the belts off the power steering and the alternator and see if thats what it is. I really hope so.... i dont really wanna pull it back out again so soon.k

I loosened the alt and ps belt and no go. Slid the transmission back further and heres what i found. Good call gittinit. Is this the aformentioned bolt? What causes this? I gotta drop the transmission completely and take the flywheel off. Im also assuming that there may be more than one of these buggers. Git what did u do about the problem did u just grind it enough to clear?

I don't rember but I think I was able to search through my stash of bolts that I aquired by parting out trucks and find one that cleared. It looks as though there are washers, or just a washer behind that bolt head. You might have enough clearance if you install a bolt without a washer

Ther is one or two more that hold that dust cover thingy in place, but they shouldnt cause interfearance. If I rember correctly they are in a slightly more desirable location.

Glad I could help! :)

I got it. I took them both out (2) and cut the washers off and ground the heads half way. Put everything back together, the tranny and stuck the distributor and hooked up the battery and found that i have a fuel leak. On the front facing side of the fuel rail there is a round bulb thing that the fuel line connects to with a copper washer. Is there any tricks to it? I remember taking it off and it was way, way tight. I cant seem to get it that tight again?

Sounds like a banjo fitting, and it needs 2 copper washers - one on each side of it. The bolt probably bottomed out before it got tight and is causing the leak.

that bolt is WAY too long,

That banjo fitting you speak of. What/where do i find parts? O rileys perhaps? Or should i just get the rest of the brass band to go with it? :D

The "Help!" section of any parts store probably has those copper washers. Take the one you still have or the bolt an match them up.

The help section was a no go. The orielys guys never even seen a copper washer that big. I said well obviously there out there. I found a oil plug copper washer that was damn close and i fought it and fought it but i prevailed! THE TRUCK RUNS!!!! Finally after over a year i got it to run and drove it to the garden hose for a drink. Its only running on 2 cylinders and like crap but none the less on its own power. Im frickin tired of pushin its ass around. :D Thanks guys for all the advice now i just got to get it to run on all 4. :D

If it's two, then it might have come undone where the factory splice for the injectors is.

What's your email? I'll forward you what Doable sent me when I was having similiar problems.

Good call jordan it was the wires and injectors. I took all the efi crap apart and stripped about 3 feet of wire shroud and chased all the wires to the injectors. While i was in there i took the fuel rail off and cleaned and ohm tested all the injectors as well as the resistance of the plugs back to the splice connections. I never would have thought that 4 injectors are ran by four wires split into 8. It was only firing on 2 and 4. I GOT IT RUNNIN AND IT PURRS LIKE A KITTEN. It sounds the best it ever has. The idle is a little high I had the distributor clocked way right to see if that made a difference when it was runnin crappy but thats all i need to do! Im stoked. Lets go wheelin!!!!
