I just emailed them about it's use on my 2003 Toyota 2.7L I4 4x4. They said that it will fit in my truck, but that it has no warranty at all because it is considered offroad only.

Since when is a Limited Slip Differenial considered offroad only? They come on both road trucks and cars also as an option. If it were a locking differiential, then I could maybe see such a claim.

I drive my truck over 90% onroad vs. offroad, so it is most likely the best for my use vs. getting a locking unit.

By the way, anyone have any idea how much it costs to have installed?

The TRD Limited Slip is manufactured by Eaton. It is sold under the TRD Kazuma brand, which means it is for off-road/racing purposes only. All TRD Kazuma products are for off-road/racing purposes, therfore they warranty differently than standard TRD parts.

This limited slip is a heavy duty unit, it IS NOT offered in either trucks or cars as an option. Some people don't understand why a heavier-duty unity carries less warranty, but TRD's philosphy is they build 'em stronger than stock but they figure folks are gonna beat the heck out of them (*ahem*- improper or excessive application of torque). :)

If most of your driving is on-road, than this is the most streetable low cost option available. You ought to call around to some gear shops for install, but if you ahve any mechanical inclination it's actually a pretty simple, straightforward process. Another option is to post on your local TTORA Chapter board and see if you can organize a WAT. Nothing wrong with comraderie and learning!

I meant LSD's in general, and not the TRD.

So this unit wouldn't be recommended for say, overall use, such as both highway/offroad?

No, not at all. I actually said this would be the most streetable low cost option for you. It has great sreet manners, much better than a full time locker.

I just got a pricing for the installation from a local Toyota dealership. They quoted me $600.

As for why I'm having Toyota do it? The truck is a year and a half old, and w/full warranty. If they do it, the warranty isn't effected.

The truck only has 17K miles on it, and after seeing the new '05 Tacoma for the first time today, I think I'll be keeping my '03 for a while. :) The installation itself, is guaranteed a full year.

I'm also going to check to see if this LSD will truly fit on my truck. My Tacoma has the 2.7L I4, and so has a different rear end from the V6. The P/N posted isn't even listed in the TRD catalog. The only one listed is a P/N 00602-41110-002, first states that it fits the V6 Tacoma only.

It will fit the trucks with the 2.7- I was told TRD excluded the 4cyl in the description to avoid inclusion of the 5-lug mini trucks which have a 7.5" rear

IMHO
$600 for install sounds outrageously high for install of the LSD-
$800 for the LSD is not worth it when you could have an ARB selectable locker installed for that price (Excluding AC)

IIRC- For that price- I think Dealer ships were selling the LSD housed in a new 3rd member- all you had to do was ship back the core

The part number you listed & above is for an assembled LSD & 3rd member with the 3.90 rear ratio - All you would have to do is swap 3rd members- if you had 3.90's & return the core

My Tacoma has the 2.7L I4, and so has a different rear end from the V6. Not true.

The P/N posted isn't even listed in the TRD catalog It certainly is.

The only one listed is a P/N 00602-41110-002, first states that it fits the V6 Tacoma only. Same reason as the first, to avoid confusion with the 5 lug mini's. Tacoma 4x4's have the same rearends available irregardless of engine. The only 4x4 rear it is incompatible with is the e-locker (for obvious reasons!). You have mail also...

Just finished the install of the $199 TRD LSD from TRDparts4u.com
Its a 3-4 Hr job. Once we got the 3rd member removed and on the bench
. It took less than 40 minutes to LSD Unit back into the third housing w/ new bearings & all. This includes pre & post LSD preload & backlash measurements.

This install was on my Bro's truck
Considering I have an ARB on my rig, For $199 This is a great bang for the buck. Especially if your truck is a daily driver-

I just ordered one. By the way, the price is actually $179.00 w/a $20.00 shipping charge, if that makes any difference? I would imagine the locals would pay less w/a direct pickup. :)

I asked a lot of questions because I wanted to make sure that it will fit my truck before ordering, and w/o questions, especially since it won't be until late January, early Febuary before I have it installed.

In the mean time, what parts, other than the bearings, will I need to get? I want to have everything ready, and on hand, when I have the LSD installed. Are the Toyota parts (bearings, etc) ok, or would an aftermarket brand be even better?

Also I use synthetic gear lube (Mobil 1) in all my powertrain. I've been told by some people that your don't need to use a friction modifier additive w/synthetic lube, while others say you still do, w/still others saying it'll make it too slippery for the clutches to work if you do. What's the word here?

I did some more pricing and got $500.0 from another Toyota dealer, I don't know if that includes parts, and around $300.00, w/parts, if I understood them right :), from a differential parts and service place, Randy's Ring and Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com) here in Washington state.

While I'd trust Randy's Ring and Pinion a little more than the Toyota dealership, since installing differenials is their speciality, of course I'm still going to check them out, on the other hand, having a Toyota dealer do it won't effect my truck warranty.

I want to replace everything, bearings, gaskets, seals, even though my truck has only 17K on it. As for using RTV vs. gasket, isn't it harder to disassemble later on, though it seals better, especially when using synthetic oil?

I've never used Redline, only Amsoil and Mobil 1. I've never seen it sold anywhere local.

By the way, anyone from Washington state had any experience or heard of other's experiences w/Randy's Ring and Pinion in Everett, Washington?

You are probably right on Randy's doing the install if they will. I would be reluctant to let a dealer do it simply because it is something they rarely (if ever) do.

Toyotat bearings are best. Barb can get you those, your axle seals & FIPG at wholesale if you like.

From what they said, the Tundra and Tacoma share the same rear axle, so there were no problems w/installing it on the Tacoma. I asked generally how long do the clutches last, they said that it depended on the maintenance,as well as the use and abuse, but said that they have never had a TRD LSD come back for any kind of service. They couldn't believe how cheap I got it for, since they use to sell them.

Anyway, Randy's is in a brand building, 2 years old, w/stalls big enough for motor homes or tractors. They showed me around the place, and the shop is very clean. These guys are professionals when it comes to differentials. www.ring-pinion.com

It was funny, Randy's couldn't believe how clean both the oil and the differential were when they took it apart. They said that they have never seen such a clean differential. I have almost 18K miles on the truck, w/13k on the oil.

I bought the truck new and at around 5000 miles had the entire powertrain changed. The idea I have is w/the initial break in, that metal particles are generated, as well as possible left over metal chips and casting sand from the manufacturing process, are going to be there. I also went synthetic w/Mobil1 gear oil.

So the idea of never changing the powertrain oil, as far as I'm concerned, is not good. I see it very important to do, and especially w/an automatic transmission, depending how hard you use the vehicle, and if driven hard and offroad, especially in water, to change it often.

I try to do my powertrain once a year w/it's manual transmission, using nothing but synthetic. I plan on keeping my truck a long while. :D

I bought one of these two years ago when they were at the steal of a price of $279...it cost me about tha tmuch to have it installed by a shop that does nothing but differentials....

I love my LSD and it has treated me great since they day I had it installed....makes street driving more fun and the truck is much more capable off road...
