It looks as though the one in the pic is made to lift and lower? I doubt I can do that but I will try to make it light weight so it can be removed easily. I could possibly mount it on a hinge so it can tilt up. I'm not exactly shure what goals I need to shoot for other than these. you know this thing is gonna rattle and make all kinds of racket every time you hit a pot hole.
With sis driving I'm shure draging the carrier on bumps and such wouldnt be an issue, but Glen, you would shurly hang up on it if I mounted it low. Could you imagine the burban sitting on the front bumper and the carrer with the tires off the ground. :D What have yall been doing to get her out of the house lately?
fold down ramp
hitch is about knee high, maybe just under my knee cant be too far away from my pickup
just the chair: 250 pounds to be safe
tiedowns: ratchet straps
looks like this:
deminseions: its 24 inches wide and 36 inches long front wheels to back wheels
Glen has 2 ramps he had made a few years ago to get dad's chair (looks the same as hers) into the van, they are made of expanded metal on 1x1 square tube, he could use these ramps to get it on and off the platform
Lets see pics of the ramps u have. I want measurements on them too. I'll plan to use them in the design as that will save on materials.

Will they fit into the back of the burb? Would cuting them down to 36" and mounting them permanently to the carrier be desirable. If mounted permanently to the carrier 5ft is just too much. I could make them fold flat to the base, then the whole thing just fold up to the back of the burb. Another thing to consider, is whether or not you have the ambulance doors or a tailgate/hatch combo on the burb. I don't rember which it is.
If you have to access the back of the burb with the chair behind it you might have issues. This alone would make you want to remove and reinstall it when not in use, but doing that over and over, would just be alot of trouble.
If its not raining and you feel up to it get me some pics of the hitch, and these ramps. I need to visualize what I'm working with.
As soon as I have a clear Idea what goals to accomplish, I will get a design going.

that sounds good Michael, they do have a cross "member" at about 34-36 inches
couldnt you hing them off the base anyway ?? :dunno:
it does have the ambulance doors, so being able to fold it up and down is a great idea
its sunny out so i'll get pics as soon as i get some breakfast

It looks as though the ramps are bowed a little. were they used for another purpose at one time, or just slightly under built origonally?

they were slightly abused :dunno: i might have tried to use them to unload that little 2wd truck i have http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd137/79coyotefrg/smilies/whistle.gif

that one is bent more than the other, i think i can turn it bow up and drive my truck over them and flatten them back out without kinking http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd137/79coyotefrg/smilies/headscratch.gif

I havent forgotten ya Glen, I just got busy with another job. I'm swapping built toy axles and 35's with crossover under a 4runner for a customer. :)

sweet, its ok, i gotta go to the heart doctor tomorrow :ack:
i'll try and drive my truck over the ramps and see if they will straighten out
Mom took the chair for a ride down the hill yesterday, its control is extremely sensitive, we gotta get them to come fine tune that thing

I was thinking about this the other day, and thought of a few ways how to raise and lower it on the cheap.
1. Use a HiLift jack with the jack mechanism stationary in the receiver hitch, and the jack rail goes up and down. You'd need a way to secure it while in motion, like a padlock in the last hole in the rail under the mechanism so it wouldn't fall. Mount the carrier to the base of the jack.
2. Get a trailer jack with enough travel (or join 2 of the legs together in a way it's seamless to the jack gear), and crank it up and down. Be sure to get a side crank, not a top crank in case it's too close to the back door.

Or, for $250, you could just get a premade one - http://www.discountramps.com/scooter-wheelchair-rack.htm (or copy it's design :D )

Thats a good idea I was conscerned of the breakover angle this thing has and if it will be able to climb the ramps to the platform without high centering.
Now you got my gears moving.

with the ramps i have i know Michael can build the platform and then make my ramps fold so they dont stick WAY up in the air

I got something for ya Glen. I just have to buy the 2x2x1/4 tube to slip into the reciever and build the ramp mounts. When can I have the ramps so I can call this project done. I'll get some pics up soon, and let you know where we stand $.

I don't figure i'll make it. Of course you know the condition of my red pile. And the Kracker hasnt been touched for a while. If it had tires it could make it, open, front/rear. With a good weekends work, and some good tires, it could make it and show yall 2,3, level trail type guys a thing or two. I'm putting all my motivation into the red truck and finnishing others projects.
The 4 runner is now gone from my shop and I picked up $10 worth of 2x2 tube to put onto the jazzychair carrier. If you would rather I could send the carrier down with Stacy, and you can figure out the ramps. That might also make me short on time for making the "fold up" option. It would get it to you sooner though.

i would rather have the fold up option, i'll get Stacy to bring the ramps up or if Mom decides she wants too we might sneek up there :dunno:

OK Glen my bro in law came up with this rack way back when and it has been passes back and forth between us over the years. It has never been used but its a nice pice of fab work and so now it will be yours.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l268/gittinit/helping%20out/goingfulltruggy040.jpg
It measures 32" (as in the pic) tall and 42" wide, and 4 to 6 inches deep. It will give yall plenty of room for the power chair and mabye a gas can or whatever you need to carry. One end of the rail is removable, and the reciver pice that needs fabbed on it is laying on top against the tree.
I still need to figure out a hinge and latch, and I need to know how far the hole is from the end of your reciver tube?

about 3 inches deep, i'll measure that as soon as the rain lets up a touch :woot:
