My Dad has a 2000 Tundra 2wd v8, with 59,000 miles on it. When ever he wanted something done, we either towed with my old Tacoma's I had, or use my 05 4Runner. That how much his truck is babied. Well the only time he tow with it the tranny starts to slip. He was towing a VW Baja Bug, and a Quad on a trailer, which is way under the max towing cap. Everytime it would shift from 2nd to 3rd, it felt like some one hit you from behind. Well he took it to Toyota, and his Warrenty ended (Powertrain) March 2005. Well i thought this was unacceptable, and on my way home from work, i stoped by and talked to the manager at the dealer. I explained that the truck was never abused, and it was always serviced at his dealership. I was told he(The Service Manager) could see what he could do, which is all i wanted. Toyota steped up and covered the Tranny. So i picked up today with a new transmission. I just thought i should share.
They showed me the old Tranny, there was pieces of Gears on the bottom of the pan. The truck has a Tranny cooler that was from the Factory. I come to find out, that Eariler Tundras have this problem. His was built in Dec 99.

Join the club of "bad 2000 model tundra tranny" club. Mine felt the same way and this was at about 74000 miles. The weakest link in the early tundra is the OD planetary gear. 01-up was supposedly upgraded with a stronger gear. Check out the carnage of the month on the TTORA homepage, you'll see how my OD planetary looked like, you should also see the OD planetary ring gear looked like. It was just as bad.
I now run with the OD off at all times. Unless, I'm on the freeway with no load.

At least your dealer did the right thing. Toyota knows full well these trannys are crap but it seems they are not making it known to the general public. If you screem loud and long enough they will fix it. Mike got totally screwed on his, though.

I think that it is great that the dealer steped up and replaced the tranny. he could have just said no. And that would have caused you a lot of problems.

nah, dealers and service mgrs decline stuff all the time, passing the buck to the DSMs (it keeps their costs down). Those guys are great and if they can't quite cover the whole thing will negotiate a compromise to keep the customer happy. As long as the gripe is reasonable they usually do the right thing...at least the 3 that I've dealt with over a 20 yr period have been this way ;) I've never had to do any further with a complaint.

Damn, i saw the pictures. The Shop forman said the same thing. I also bitched about the brake TSB, and got that done in January since his was always warping rotors. I was told that the new tranny is upgraded with stronger guts. I guess time will tell, and see how it hold up.

You think all of the '01 Tundra's had the "up-graded" planetary gears in them? I've been sweating this since I heard yours crapped out  . I believe my truck was manufactured in June of '01.

No. I've heard of models up to 02's having tranny problems. Just not as much as the 00 models.

I never thought it would go out. I seen on other board people that have way more miles, and never had a problem. I guess it is just luck of the draw. I had a DC Tundra, and the tranny was way firmer than my dads 00 was. I noticed the "new" one shifts hard 2nd to 3rd. I went back and i was told it is normal. I just used to my 5speed in my 4runner i guess.

Mike,
Can you please elaborate on the symptoms prior to killing the tranny? The A340F in the "big taco" seems a bit rougher shifting of late, particularly going down when coming to a stop. Seems worse since putting the 4.30's, maybe more reverse axle wrap, as there is definitely more compression braking, even with only a 10% ratio reduction.
On a brighter note, I pulled a 4k# enclosed trailer round abouts 1k+ miles not too long ago in O/D at highway speeds on the lower gears; got 12 MPG, not too shabby. We'll see if it will pull the Heep in O/D later this month for TXTO.
I have also learned how to warp the front rotors on this rig, just like every other of my previous four Toyo's, except the vented FJ-40 rotors/IFS V-6 calipers on the early solid axle in my Heep, but it doesn't ever go very fast...by driver's choice/good sense. After 20 years, I guess that warped rotors are something that one just gets used to.
Take care, John
P.S. - I still have that 4.7 FIPK if you know anyone possibly interested, price reduced.

I first felt the tranny go right after getting off the trail. As the tranny was going through the gears, I felt, so did the passengers, a harsh jerk of the truck as it shifted. At first I thought it was either or both the front and rear locker, had the front hubs locked. I didn't feel it again until I got home. Pulling out of the driveway I felt the same harsh "jerk" and I knew my hubs were not locked. So, to be sure I removed the tranny pan and found out why the truck jerked. Metal pieces on every four of the magnets.
As far as the FIPK, I think many are leaning towards the stock box and a drop-in.

Thanks Mike, I may just need to pull the pan and have a look at mine.
