Am I an old guy or what? I have been noticing mods being labled like....deck plate mod, grey wire mod, and everyone knows about the swivel cupholder mod. So am I just not gittinit or what? Is it just the lingo I lack, or is there more to it. I like the older toys, so when modding newer trucks comes around I'm just out of it.

Could someone clue me in to the younger brother of my mini. I have tried so hard to get away from all the factory wiring issues, as I just don't see it nessicarry in a wheeler. Most of the newer toys I have seen built these guys just don't wheel them to the extremes to even need lockers. Mabye it is the whole weekend warrior, daily driver thing I don't understand, but even on my WW/DD toy I would mutch rather pull the doors and the door buzzer than have AC. Besides that leaves the compressor for an air pump for airing back up after a trail ride.

Does it just all come down to different strokes for different folks, or am I missing something?

man, I am with ya. but I have a reason.. I am old.... I think alot of it comes from experience, knowing what works and is needed vs what is just bling, or crap someone posts on the internet... from my old bronco days, I know a couple guys who are serious web wheelers. and read all this "necessary" stuff and think its a must do, and spend a buttload of money doin it, crap, to me its about simplicity, and as far as wheelin goes, get some seat time and learn how to drive.. ya can get through a lot more by half way knowing how to do it than by buying the latest bling.... guess thats why I have always driven junk.. It kinda makes me smile to run the same stuff the 50,000 buggies are running... :D

The deckplate mod is when people put a hole in their air filter box that can be closed back up at any time. They feel they get better air flow and such. The grey wire mod is for TRD tacomas. It lets them use the locker in 2wd or 4hi, because the trd from the factory only lets you use the locker in 4lo. These mods don't cost any money and are not really bling. The deckplate might cost like 5 bucks. The greywire mod i don't think cost anything.

Yea I really need to get some seat time, couse I struggle on rocks bigger than gravel roads. :D

I drive junk becouse its what I can afford, well that and I just can't see beating up a newer more expensive vehicle. I know you don't have to flog on em to wheel, but for me its about making it through the obistacle without winching, even if that means wadding up some body panels and coming through on 2 wheels. Most times I can just walk my rig right through where I point it, experiance makes all the difference.

I have a feeling at takover there will be a few rigs trying to hang that can't. Heck I've been in that position.

Thanks 01yota I was wondering what those mods were about. Are there any others like that that yall newer toy owners do to tweak things? I guess its just the lingo I don't comprehend, couse weve been doing that same type of stuff for years on our older toys. Open alement filters, and linclon lockers, are basically the same type of thing right, if you look at it in retrospect?

gittinit.. your right, I didnt mean to come across like folks cant wheel, or that I can.. crap I got wadded up in Gregs rocks Sat..and dang near got my rear driveshaft.. but I think some of of the newer stuff is to over ride the safety measures the mfg's put in place ie: the no locker in high range bs.. I had the same deal on my rubicon and had to bypass that.. but the lingo has changed for sure.. :2cents:

Not referring to my rig are ya....

I've wheeled my junk (87 runner) and I decided I wanted a nicer wheelin rig...

It has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantage would be it requires more skill to keep it nice.

Disadvantage, if ya dent the crap out of it ya feel bad.

I look at it like this though, all things being equal, nice vehicle or not, eventually its goina get some body damage, so whatever you wheel, you better be prepared to endure that.

Now with my current rig, I'll try like hell to make it through something, but I've got front and rear winches for reasons.... Its to keep up with you people and your truggies...

I wasnt refering to your rig or any one in particular for that matter. It is a prime example of what I was talking about though. I guess from experiance I see things differently. I have been through trails and have been proud to beat my rig, then someone comes up with a freshly waxed whatever and says, oh yea I made that trail last week..... the whole time I'm rolling my eyes becouse I know they pulled cable. Don't get me wrong I'm not afraid to use my winch, but I'd rather use it on someone elses rig than my own. I tried the quicksand trail at hotsprings once a few years back. After pulling 75 feet of cable twice I decided never again. I found my limitations that night. Anyone can get through any trail, with the right winch, or 2.

Its really not about who has the nicer rig, its more about if your willing to use it. I've seen some pics of your wheeling escapades....I'll try to keep up with you if I can.

I know you weren't talkin bout my rig... just givin ya crap.

After having the nice rig, I still miss the ability to get damage and not worry about it... but I enjoy my a/c, heat, leather, etc.... and staying out of the elements. but i do see myself building a rig from scratch, most likely on an early 2nd gen 4runner platform... and i imagine it will most likely windup jeepish... no top, no doors, bobed, with a custom canvas top... but til then I got my cruiser.

I agree with its not who has the nicer rig, it definately is whether or not your willing to use it. and if anything it will be me tryin to keep up with you!

gotta agree with the beater vs the nicer rig.. one reason to have diffrent rigs!! :) my mall crawler is our '05 heep rubicon on 33's that we normally take to Colorado or Moab wheelin. I really try to keep it dent free and it wont ever see more than a 3 rated at the park even though it is fairly capable and equipped with a 8274-50 . but I have found over the years its really hard to have a nice rig and actually wheel it to its potential.. it wont be nice long.. one reason my old yota junk is where it is at for me..

thanks for askin.... The Sammi is cool as hell and seems like it will go anywhere. It kinda pisses off some big really built rigs... it walks stuff like Gregs rocks 4 fingers and such much better than my truggy... but at 86" wheelbase which is a 5" stretch it is kinda sketchy on ledges an bad off camber stuff.. its on 36" tsl's and 6.5 t case, toy axles with 5.29's (110:1 crawl) and detroit's f&r and propane.. I left it pretty much as full body as possible . it really is a fun, cool rig and great in the woods.... weighs probably 2700-2900lbs with 9000lb winch and cable and full tank of 'pane... the heep is just another rubicon on 33's wife drives it to work some and we take it out west to moab and colorado some.. here is the sammi..... and my old ass.....its no wonder I am such a poor cracker...

Thats a nice sammy! Youve done everything I would do if I could get my hands on one, except for a slightly longer wheelbase stretch. Did you stretch both ends? What springs are those?

slacker24/7
06-12-2009, 12:39 PM
its got stock yj springs with the spring plates drilled for a extra inch. so I gained about 5" probably equally divided.. I have some xj springs that I can reverse and gain 6" or so but that would take a comp cut in the rear as well as the need to add an anti wrap bar. then the front, ya have to move the steering box forward (toy ifs box) some use toy rear springs due to the offset pin. I looked at all that, but am gonna keep it as full body as possible and just wheel the truggy on severe stuff with ledges and stuff .... and the zuk to just lay the windshield down and trail ride in.....

So this is more a mild trail/camping rec rig , and the extra cab is your balls out rig. I'd say the truggy pales in comparison to that samuari. Thats one bad little rig!
