I'm doing some out loud thinking about how I'd like to build my bumper to hold a Warn 8274.

It won't hurt my feelings if I have to cut the grill a bit, but I don't want the winch too close to the radiator.

Also, at this point, I'd really like tube, but plate is fine as long as it's the minimal amount of plate.

So who wants (or has the tools) to help fab this beast? :D Oh gittinit... :p

Some ideas I've come across...

Which boss? I though you didn't work there anymore? Or you talking about sneaking in via other employees? :xdevil:

I'm digging the first one, too, but I think I might want the winch closer to the hood line, and tucked in a bit more.

I've got some idears in my head, I just haven't put them on paper yet. They have some neat bends, and it might look pretty mean when done.

That 1st one is slick! I don't like the approach it gives but I bet he was trying to keep the stock hood latch. That is something to keep in mind when you do this. The higher and further back the winch goes the less likely the stock latch is to fit. You can and prolly should get some expanded metal to go between the radiator and the winch. You don't want frays in that nice senthytic rope from contacting the radiator. I do love that its tied into the shock hoops. These upright winches will pull your bumper off if you don't have multiple tie in points to the frame.

Just let me know when you want to do it. I might be laid off work the last week of this month. I plan to get alot done on my rig but I could squeese in a little time for a small project.

Ok, thanks. How often is the boss gone?

That sucks about the layoff. :( I know you are busy with your truck, and I don't want to distract you from that.

Anybody have an idea how many feet of tube that first bumper might take? I'm thinking about not doing the plate like that one where the winch bolts in, but moving the tubes where the mount bolts are, and sleeving holes in the tube for the bolts. So the winch just appears to be "hanging" there.

One stick, or about 20ft. You should have a few feet left over for bracing and such.

weekends , mostly if that don't work out we can bend it there and tack and finish welding it where I'm working now or we can use my buddies shop. Paul

Hmm, I've got a good welder now, so if we could bend it up and tack it, I could finish it up at home.

You found a new rig yet? :driving:

That would be cool. Got some buyers for my Dodge and yes I found some rigs, just waiting to sell my truck. I'd tell you about the possible new rigs but Im trying to hide them so they stay for sale till I can get them !!!

I hadn't seen a 8274 in a tube bumper before. The last picture looks real good and the extra braces behind the body mount looks like the bumper will have a lot of strenght.

Josh,
Sorry, I know you got a lot more pictures, but I bet you don't have these two.

So, with football practice for Colton and rain and Walmart trips, I didn't get to Michael's until around 2:00, neither master builder had stopped for lunch. I insisted they take a break . . .
I don't know when they started.

Bumper is built!! A very big THANK YOU goes out to Michael Faber! Dude, you've got an awesome setup there in your shop.

We built it out of 1 3/4" .120 wall HREW, and a little bit of 1/4" plate. We recessed the winch back next to the core support. All that needed notching is the grill.

I've still got a laundry list of things to do, such as cleanup (including my booger welds), cap the ends, make some blinker mounts, paint it, and wire the winch, and notch the grill.

Here's the blank canvas...

Many hours later, here's the finished product. The welds were still hot!

And here's how it sits now, with extra rust thanks to the wonderful weather we've had.

I need to clearance the bottom of that vertical brace that tied the hood latch to the lower core support. It's going to be in the way of the winch rope.

All in all, it went pretty smooth. We only had to remake one support. I haven't decided which tool is better - the bender, the plasma, or the welder. :D:D

I also had enough tube to make a set of sliders, but time was short (and so was the supply of tube), so I didn't get the legs made, or them mounted on the truck.

Josh, any chance we could get a pic from the driver's side with a small amount of the driver fender completely parallel with the ground? How's the approach angle? How far out does it go? I'm trying to figure those questions out with that picture :D
