View Full Version : Daniel/Aaron - info about the head/block/timing chain issue

Background: Daniel's timing chain "fell off" the timing gear at the last event, and a few hours later, we got it back on and got the truck running good enough to get back to the trailer. Before and after this happened, you could hear the chain slapping around in there. He recently did the timing chain, but had lots of frustration getting the right chain. Further inspection revealed that he's got a late block (with the saturn on the side), and a early head.

the old head on a new block simply WILL NOT WORK

you can bolt it on but the newer timing chain wont go on at all and the older style chain will be floppy loose, not to mention compression ratio will be down around 7 to 1

you NEED either a newer style head or a older style block

Looks like Daniel needs to find another early short block, or a 22RE head, and bolt the carb stuff to it.

yes.. i too did some digging and the heads are different... one more reason i'll stick to the later stuff.

In 1985- the 22RE had a major change. The block was taller and the head shorter, compared to the earlier models. The engines' blocks and heads are not interchangeable (for practical and cost purpose).

BZZZZZZZZZZZ thats a mis type, whoever wrote that up for Toysport got confused
the blocks were shorter and the heads shorter

the blocks were .200 shorter ie, early block 11.280 deck height later 85 plus = 11.080 deck height

the heads are also shorter 96mm compared to 100

Sorry I haven't updated this any.. I haven't had internet since May. Daniel took his block to Bunn's and it's getting bored 40 over. Head from engnbldr should be in next week and hopefully it'll be back together soon after that.

Did he damage any of the valves or pistons? Just curious.

Unless he lost a valve into the combustion chamber thats not a posibility. With the talldeck head and a shortdeck block the pistons wouldnt travel fully into the combustion chamber like the head is desighned for them to. I beleive he could have had a valve open and still had clearance for the flat top pistons.

The pistons looked okay.. The block has seen pleny of use apparantly. It was rebuilt and bored out at least once before. The rings were completely wore out when he pulled it apart, so who knows how many miles are on the block.. Not sure on the valves, but I believe there were alright.
