to make it short i have an 01 trd v6 ext cab tacoma. towed a jet ski on a four hour trip. when my truck sits in traffic or around town my engine runs at the normal running temperature. but when im on the highway between 65 and + the temp gauge gos from normal temp up to almost in the red then back down then back up and keeps fluctuating. if i let off the gas for while or coast down hill the temp gauge will eventually come back down. im thinking i need to flush the coolant, (which is full by the way) and replace the thermostat. anybody else ever have problems? anything else that it could be? thanks for the help.

Most likely the thermostat. If it's comming down, it's probably because the fan clutch engaged a bit more...

I agree. Sounds like the t-stat is not opening at the right time and/or its not opening all the way. It may stay cool in town because it is stuck partially open, and there is enough coolant passing to cool the engine since its under no load.
