I know this is common knowledge to most guys here but not me. I guess I usually heard teh trm when talking about Dana stuff but I heard a guy on hear talking about changing his to a HP on a Yota. What does this really mean?
Thanks

I see. So it's mostly a clearance thing right?

Basically, the pinion is ABOVE the centerline of the ring gear instead of below.
High pinion is approx 30% stronger in front diffs because you engage the gears on the drive side instead of the coast side.

Basically, the pinion is ABOVE the centerline of the ring gear instead of below.
High pinion is approx 30% stronger in front diffs because you engage the gears on the drive side instead of the coast side.
To add to that the high pinion is stronger in the front when going forward as is the low pinion in the rear going forward.
They are both weaker going in reverse.
And the opposite is true as well. A low pinion front and high pinion rear would be at the wekaest going forward and strongest going in reverse.
But since most of our driving in in the forward direction (hopefully) the first setup mentioned above is more desirable.
And the ground clearance does help. High pinions can also help alleviate bad driveshaft angles.

other note it is recommended not to use a toyota high pinion third in rear axles

It's not really recommended to run ANY high pinion 3rd in the rear ... well, Currie makes a reverse tooth HP for rear applications, but it's STOOPID expensive.

depending on suspension set up and motor, Hi pinions can also limit up travel, so if going HP in a dedicated rig, take that in to account as well, I had to redo 2 set ups because I was unaware they were using HP :-X
