View Full Version : If you run synthetic...

...be very careful who spools in your rope.
I found my rope all wadded up on one side of the drum. I had to hook up to a tree to pull it out and found that it was all messed up... Ouch...
I lost a chafe guard (it did it's job I guess... Haha!) and about twenty feet of rope. Plus, those sweet aluminum crimps that I had to order are gone.
So, if you like runnin' synthetic, make sure you talk with who's spoolin' in your rope, or use the rope for where you're stuck, unhook, and spool it in yourself.

Thanks for the PSA. :D
Gotta be careful doing a lot of pulls with a lot of rope on the drum, too. I've seen it get pinched and damaged near the drum from doing a few hard "line-snapping" pulls. (where it might be a bit crooked from lazy spooling)
You really have to take care of it more than steel.

PSA was no charge today :D
Synthetic has its ups, but you have to treat it like a lady and be gentle.
I was half-heartedly expecting to hear "if your 4Runner didn't suck so much, you wouldn't have to winch..." :D

gotta agree..with ya Jordan.. also be sure and spool it back under a load as well as you would a cable, its a bitch to trust someone to watch your cable (rope) but some times its unavoidable, if its piling up on one side during a pull, pull that off and change anchor points.. but ya need to get it straightened our asap.. wow.. sounds like you had a great little helper there.... :flipoff4: but of course, if your runner didnt suck so much and you knew how to drive it wouldnt have happenned... ok.. ya happy??
see ya buddy...

I put the rope on under load and just about burned up my motor.
I was thinking my rope was a little long to begin with, but it was fine as long as I made sure to spool it up right. I'll take credit for this screw up, I guess. BUT, hopefully others can learn from my mistake.
Also, I'm not thrilled with this UHMW fairlead from SKY. It's not very smooth and is not very firm at the mounting points.
So, anyone have an aluminum or steel fairlead I could buy? Not crucial, but that'd be nice.
And Dave, thanks for those words :D I only needed about a foot of winch line to get me over those rocks. Everything after that was unloaded spooling, and I should've just stopped and done it myself  You learn and live... I'm still getting over my web-wheeling days :o

Yea, I know. You were just doin' your part...
I was half-heartedly expecting to hear "if your 4Runner didn't suck so much, you wouldn't have to winch..."
I had too much rope on there, but still, an effort would've been nice, ya know?! Whatever... chock it up as one of those things.
Now ya'll kids listen up and don't repeat my mistakes!!!! :lmao:
