Alright guys, I have been dreaming of doing this for a while now and to be honest after seeing the AZ boys tear some shit up ITS FUCKING TIME TO STEP IT UP! (Story Time) I went on line and did a little homework, and going with 1 tons would be great but I really don't see that in the near future. I did come across a good deal on a complete suspension, axles and tires though. The only thing that I may have a problem with is this came off a 96 single cab and mine is a 00 ext cab. i do know that there is a difference in the rear leaf spring lengths. my springs measure 54 1/4 (i believe) from eye to eye and these measure 52",( he said these were long springs, how true is that, i don't know). and the 96 was a 4 cyl and mine is a V6 so more than likely the front springs are going to sag a little, but i did hear that the early 4 banger was an iron block and it weighs just as much as a newer V6, so i hope someone can answer that question. I got the driveshafts too, i haven't looked yet but i think i might need to make new ones cause the single cab rear shaft is shorter than the ext shaft. I pulled the trigger and now its time to tear in to this thing.
Here are the axles:
Ford 9"er: 5.13 Gears and a spool, pretty plain.

High Pinion 44: Cromo Shafts all the way through, locker and 5.13 gears, and full hydro steer.

and the front of it

the springs are Alcan Progressive rates with All-Pro Greasable Shackles

and rear:

Not a bad set of axles. What tires? What front locker? What brand of chromos and what u-joints? What's the spline count of the rear axle? Also, whoever welded those leaf perches on, especially the front axle, is either blind, or doesn't own a square or a level.

36" irocks with bead locks, Detroit i believe for the locker, not sure on what brand on the cromos or u joints. the rear is a 31 spline. and that is the exact reason that i will be repairing many, if not all the welds!

A spool in the rear with your wheelbase is not a good idea. Depending on what kind of trails you're going to run. The rear is going to want to push your front making it hard to navigate around tight obsticals. Yeah, I know you probably will not push the rig too hard I'm just sayin'...

Just out of curiosity what was the process that was used to weld the perches to the cast arms?

that's what we call "snot blowing"... esp the pumpkin to axle tubes, which is unfortunate because those hp44's are nodular and weld beautifully... :p

If you're gonna "wheel this thing hard" as you say, I would leave the spool. Don't waste your time and money to put in a Detroit. A Detroit is essentially a spool with moving parts, ie: it can break. The only time a Detroit disengages is if you are coasting. If you are in a wheeling situation, it will act like a spool. Not to mention if you break a shaft with a Detroit, kiss the Detroit goodbye as there is a great chance it will break due to the shockload of the shaft breaking.

I had a spool for a few years on my rig (114" wb) and it was OK, but with a full body rig on a tight trail it made for some interesting lines I had to take. I have since replaced with an ARB and its night and day difference. I can actually cut a corner now. Consider looking for a used ARB to save some serious coin, well worth it.

It had about 1 minute to settle on it's own weight before the pic was taken . It's settled as planned to about 25" at the front body mount which provides a pretty good center of gravity and break over angle considering the school bus wheel base.

Blah blah blah.....
The damn picture was taken right after the wheels were put on - hell, the damn welds weren't even completed - just wanted to get an idea on stance before it was finish welded!
It's settled a bit since then and is now at 25.25" from the body mount up front which is respectable, especially considering the front springs have completely settled yet and I still have the POS stock bumper. Adding a tube bumper/winch will help settle the springs and lower it a bit more.

I've just got a spare 3rd for sale cheap coming on the market including actuator, sans R&P but a few other internals thrown in. Also got some spare axle shafts I want to peddle to some poor needy soul, sans tone rings. I can think of no one else I'd rather have have it.
It wasn't just the hub but that fucking Electrac that went boom too but I wasn't going to drive my truck to bust it, I was gonna drive yours. I got really pretty damn good at bustin tacama axles and shit.
I think Tracktech had fucked up metallurgy and they used the same fucked up alloy that explodes and makes Detroits self destruct when something else cuts loose. Now Eaton makes that shit but they dropped the Electrac, probably because it was a POS and they wanted to sell their own POS instead. I've got an OX up there now and just got another OX for the D60 Rock Jock I put in the rear. Both have my super duper Fosterlectric actuator mod so they are electric not cable selected.

Thanks so much! I would certainly buy that third, or just the locker assembly- I have 2 thirds already, both with just the locker side gear busted... I'm trying to get an FJ80 rear so I'd get discs, full float and the electric locker. This is the second rear I've blown up and it didn't take that much abuse either time- I think it's my crappy housing repair but I think I can find a housing to replace this shit one. I'll call you this evening and we can talk about this. I think the 80 axle is a good idea but if I can't find one maybe I can just fix up what I have and wheel for another year or so again.

Don't feel to bad about it. I started going though them pretty damn quick myself. Between busted R&Ps I'd do side gears. If you run with the busted side gear for long it strips the splines off the end of the axle. At least it does if you bust the passenger side then lock it up and drive it anyway. Steers a little odd that way but it does get you home.
I think my housing was bent but the passenger side gear has an undercut and stress riser built in so the collars snap off pretty damn quick. Toyota wants to fuck you over and sell you a whole shit load of parts for several hundred dollars instead of just the side gear that it looks like they almost made to fail.
Oh the extra parts I have included with the third include a locker side side gear so it would be like you getting two thirds back in action for the price of one. At least one if not two of em but I think I have just one extra locker side gear and the third has both sides still in tact. No R&P but most folks are going to regear anyway so there is no sense in paying for what you aren't gonna use. What do you think a fair price would be? Considering the fact that you aren't buying it of course. LOL
I got tired of being abused and hunting down side gears and such all the damn time. With the Rock Jock 60 I have stonger and more avaliable parts to buy if I do manage to bust anything. Big bearing Torino style Ford outers so wheel bearings and such aren't such and issue either. I went with drum brakes so I didn't have to go fucking around with the MC or change wheels and tires too and piss a couple more grand away. Personally, I don't think rear disks have all that much to offer anyway. Not when you consider all the other bullshit you have to do to accomidate them.
I still gotta figure out a way to hook up the ebrake but I think I have some ideas. It would be easy to do with a simple bridle but I want to keep it out of the rocks as much as possible so I'm thinking a couple of pulleys to change cable direction. Make it go up, then side ways and up over the top and graft the toy bell crank to it up top maybe.

I remember calling them and they told me the same BS. That side gear on the passenger side does get real thin where the gear meets the splines- probably a fuse or some BS...

BTW I have three spare axles too. I can take the backing plates off and toss them or leave them on. Your choice as it's clean up day here soon.
If you want them they are up for grabs too. Still at a loss for a price for those. I think I paid Jim at Inchworm about $125 for two axles so maybe I'll just sell all three of them for that much. Hell, I'll even give you a stripped one if you pay the shipping for that shit. Want some gold paint on it? LOL

well i got a little bit done last night. i tacked in the front cross member for the hanger kit to sit under it. i whipped out the plasma and cut off all the brackets.
one of the TIG welds on the inside of the crossmember

crossmember installed

the sides all ground down, still need to grind the bottom and top of frame, but im far enough along to where i start putting on the frame plates.

now my next question is for the rear drive shaft length. i am going to be running a single case for a while seeing that funds are keeping me from the duals for now, is it better to run a one piece driveshaft or do i keep the carrier bearing and have the drive shaft set up for the 9"? i would think that with the one piece i would lose a little bit of clearance and have the shaft exposed to rocks and run the risk of getting hung up and or possibly breaking it. Surge and i talked a little bit about it yesterday, but after looking at it this morning again, I'm a bit confused on the choice.

I'm running the stock driveshaft, with carrier bearing and just had it setup for the 9". Having a one piece without a crawler would leave the driveshaft seriously exposed. :2cents:

Sure...but it looks just like the stock driveshaft with just a different end. ;)

Stick with the two piece. A one piece will end up getting hammered on the rocks. I run dual cases and still run a two piece. It really does keep your vitals up out of harms way. I would say if you shortened your WB and was running duals then a one piece would be a good idea.
