I guess if you snap or twist a shaft, it gets stuck in the locking collar, or something like that.
That pair I linked looks like a good deal, since the front usually goes for $800+ alone. Irbis wants $800 for an open FZJ80 rear, I don't even know what they charge for an E-locker. If you do buy it, and you don't want the rear housing, I might be interested in it to offset your cost a bit, depending on where you are.
I am in new jersey, i think Coos Bay is in Oregon? thats pretty far but im sure we could still work something out. The axles are about an hour from me.
If I need to, I've got family in MD, and even a little in NJ (near Asbury). All I really need is the outers of the rear axle- hubs, brakes, etc. I'm planning a Diamond rear using FZJ80 bits, and FROR wants $800 to source the FF outers.
ok cool, well i will let you know what he sais. He hasnt logged on all day so i probably will not hear from him until tonight i would guess. 1200 does seem like a smokin deal as long as everything is good with them.
By 9.5", you mean the same design as the old FJ diffs, right? The FZJ80 is the only place I know of (in the US anyway) to find the 9.5" with an E-locker.
The rear axle is a beautiful piece. Full float, 30-spline, disc breaks, integral e-brake(that actually works!), 9.5" ring gear, etc. The only major pitfall is that the locking collar for the e-locker slides on the splines of one of the shafts. These have a tendency to twist under abusive stresses, permanently locking the locker and requiring invasive surgery with a torch/plasma to get the thing apart to fix it.
In my opinion, freshen them up, slap Slee's steering on them, and run it. If you have problems with the rear third drop an ARB in it or spool it. FYI the front e-locker uses a different design and does not suffer from the same problems as the 9.5" e-locker.

If you're running something other than stock shafts (and I've only seen one guy on PBB use the FJ80 offset rear in a Taco), that's not much of a concern. I went with the open diff (I got the 3rd for free, and won the gears) and decided to add an ARB, since at the time, that was about the same cost as buying an E-locker 3rd and paying to regear it anyway.
Drop me a PM if you pull the trigger on those and want to part the housing to get some $$ back. You could probably sell the shafts on ih8mud too. They usually go for $100+, since you need the one with the longer splines to swap an E-locker into an FJ80 axle.
