Hi to all members,
I am looking to purchase a 1984 Land Cruiser. This might sound crazy, but I want to use it more for daily driving on the streets not really off-road. If you know about it or have one in those years. Can you please give me your experience on it. How the engine, transmission, durabilty, rust isssue, and most of all ride quailty?? Is it a good daily driver? Is the ride very stiff like a truck or like SUV? Is the ride tolerable on an every day basis? I see no rust on the body panel, but there are rust underneath. Should I be very concern. Thanks your help will make it easy to finalize my purchased.
I hate to steer people away from this site because we have a wealth of information and knowledgeable people here but go to ih8mud.com plenty of info on cruisers there..
What you asked:
Engine - bullet proof. Most go 250k+ miles. I have 203k on mine, my brother has an '84 with over 250k.
Transimission - same as above.
Durability - drivetrain (engine, tranny, diffs, axles) are all way overbuilt. HOWEVER, you are buying a 25+ year old vehicle, stuff does happen and would be foolish to think it won't happen to what you get. They are also quiet famous for leaking. Still hunting leaks on mine.
Rust - I live in Cali, not an issue here...mine has zero rust on it.
Ride - I've never riden in a stock one, just lifted ones. Mine has has about 2.5" of lift and rides fine. Yes it rides like a truck, but it's not harsh or uncomfortable.
I love my '87, but wouldn't daily drive it, unless I had to. Couple reasons. First, parts are expensive, very expensive. It's an old truck and things can go wrong. Second, it is a gutless wonder. Around town it is border line acceptable but trying to get on the freeway requires some luck and lots of on-ramp. And forget passing. Third, it's a gas hog. Like someone else said, expect anywhere from 12-15 (if you are lcky). Finally for me, it's my toy. I look forward to driving since I don't drive it very often.
I really do love mine...it is built like a tank, does quite well off-road and gets lots of looks, but would/could not "recommend" one as a daily driver.
