In May 2009 I bought the truck. It had with a blown motor, but came spare block & crank, 3" BL and some not so desirable rear suspension. For $500 bucks I figured it was a good enough deal.

Day I got it home.

Bought another 22R with a new clutch on it for $100 bucks, then rebuilt it. I used a engnbldr kit and went ahead and threw in a crawler cam. New alternator, water pump, fuel pump, hoses, belts, carb rebuild kit, etc, were purchased with my buddy's employee discount at O'reilly's. :D

Well I managed to get the duals put in in, but the rear crossmember is in the way of the driveshaft. I'll have to cut it out and put a crossmember somewhere else. I'm planning on picking up some more steel tomorrow. I'll get pics when it's all done.

benny_wiskas
04-17-2010, 07:23 PM
The Budbuilt flat cross member still requires a lot of cutting despite the body lift.
Only a phone pic for now.

Kyle didnt get much done due to having to spend all morning trying to fix a window motor in a cavalier... chevy COULD NOT have done worse designing this crap. So I left a note for the dealership.

Rears up front, diff armor, and truss are on. I'm not sure if my low-steer crossover plans are going to pan out, so I may be in the market for some high-steer arms.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f35/mossyrocks/DSC05148.jpg

It leans to the passenger side a little, but when I get in it, it sits dead level.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f35/mossyrocks/DSC05146.jpg

I still need to add a leaf or two to the rear to make it level.

did you have to add any to the rear pack when you did the RUF?
I added two leafs from the pack I got from you. I cut each end of each leaf 3" shorter than the leaf above it. (does that make sense?)

i think the ppl want to hear more about your lowsteer idea? Are you going to use wicked steering arm or something?
The lowsteer idea will not pan out. I was going to build a raised bracket on the tie rod between the passenger side leaf spring and heim, but there's not enough room.

i like your skid plate mounting idea...i may have to steal that
This method of mounting the crossmember makes installing and removing it super easy.

DP is looking good. Coupla questions: 1) Are the slip on bumpstops the only bumpstop you're running on the front? If it is 2) Do you think they'll hold up without damage to the shock when the suspension is at full stuff? 3)how much of a pita is it to slip the bumpstop over the shock eye?

benny_wiskas
08-31-2010, 09:04 PM
Taking DP out for a shakedown run at Brad's tomorrow before SETO!

Derrick: The bumpstops on the shocks are the only bumpstops I'm running front and rear. I read somewhere on pirate that people have been doing that and it's been fine. The bumpstop came pre-installed on the BBCS shocks, so i'm not sure how to go about installing them. lol

Mossyrocks
09-01-2010, 04:27 AM
You cant stretch em over anything, especially a shock eye. Im running them front and rear on my coilovers also, love em.

Derka
09-01-2010, 07:54 AM
I like the idea of them...especially since i wouldn't have to build a 6'' tall, goofy ass, bumpstop to keep my springs off the drag link and tie rod. Daystar makes some that slip over the shock eye, but im skeptical on how well they work. Eibach make some as well, but i don't think they slip on.

Lets see some pictures of DP in day light.

where do you find these magic bumpstops?

silvertoy
09-01-2010, 12:31 PM
Are these 'foam' bumpstops designed to complement existing bumpstops or completely replace them? It doesn't seem to me a 'foam' product would prevent bottoming out on a really hard hit.

The rear shackle angle is awful. When I added leafs to the rear springs, it changed the angle to that. The most important thing is fixing the gas leak, then either move the shackle, or move the front hanger.

The only thing, it looks like there is going to have to be a maximum height requirement with how low that roof is.

Just put Longfields in along with Bobby's hub gears and IFS manual hubs. Now I can drive to the trail for SETO without a welded front diff to worry about! Are we there yet?

So, we had a Hallowheelin pre-run a few weeks ago, and I'm still repairing the damage.

Here's crappy video of me taking on the wall.

Everyone loves carnage

The driveshaft didn't even hit anything. It was just torqued off.

So, this happened on a Hallowheelin "shakedown run".
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f238/kddude2006/592ad91b-2399-4dcf-a528-e50965fe2647_zpsf23aec11.jpg (http://s48.photobucket.com/user/kddude2006/media/592ad91b-2399-4dcf-a528-e50965fe2647_zpsf23aec11.jpg.html)

Long story short, I was making a new line. In the process of turning around, I sheared my studs off the passenger side. After inspection, two had sheared and rusted and the other two were shiny and clean. I probably broke two of them a year ago, and the other two were all that was holding.

Trail gear six-shooters are being installed tonight.

I realized it's been about a year since I updated this thread. The last year of school has made it virtually impossible to wheel. I'm at least able to a little this year. I'll graduate in May, so I have that to look forward to.

I was running stock studs. They held up for a few years with a welded front end and hydro assist, so I can't complain too much.

So, DP is getting some upgrades since I won a $500 gift certificate from Wide Open Design. Naturally, I ordered some LED light bars to replace my single headlight. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing right??

2 - Lazerstar 4" Endeavour
2 - Lazerstar 10" Atlantis

Since I was going to be doing some wiring, I decided DP needs rock lights to go along with the light bars.

I got 20 of these things for $13 shipped from China. I ordered red ones so it won't kill your night vision as bad, plus it should look kinda evil. :xdevil:

I also made a switch panel to weld on the underside of the roof today.

I finally got around to putting the rock lights on. I was going to add a few more to the rear, but ran out of mounting supplies. These pictures are about as good as they get at 6 o'clock with a black floor. I hope to get around to adding some more Sunday.

I just cut them apart then got some 20 gauge speaker wire and connected them together. You don't have to have them all connected together to work. In other words, if you only have one end connected to power it will still work. You could use fancy weatherproof connectors, but I twisted the wires together and just taped them real well. I tested a few on Red Rocket and they've held up the elements for a few months like that.

Thanks. The cooler seems to work ok. It still gets pretty warm, but when you have a welded front the steering is always working pretty hard. While you are installing, go ahead and plumb in a filter. Marc told me it helped his steering a lot. Of course he told me that after I got everything connected and bled. Lol

07-20-2014, 01:00 PM
A filter hu? Never thought about it.. what kind, in line fuel or something?

benny_wiskas
07-20-2014, 01:56 PM
You'd have to ask Marc what he used (might have used the trail gear resivoir with oil filter). I'd imagine a fuel filter wouldn't like the thicker viscosity of ATF, so you'd want to use an inline hydraulic fluid filter (if they even make such a thing). On a related note, I'm going to drain all my Royal Purple and put in tractor hydraulic fluid and see if that makes my steering any happier/quieter sometime. Everyone on Pirate says it's the best thing they've ever ran.

I added four more rock lights for a total of 12 under the truck. I took these at noon with the shop doors shut, so I imagine they're going to be pretty bright at night. :xpimp:
I MIGHT add one more on the front edge of the Budbuilt skid, but I'm not doing it this weekend since I used all 50 ft of my speaker wire.

Nah, put red ones under the front and blue under the rear so the colors offset each other. Haha FYI, the blue lights are the brightest leds and the red are the dimmest.

The White Rhino is going again. I'm going to be on the hunt for a diesel in a couple of years.
