I think faber an dI were gonna build new cross members for the duals?/

Well waiting on seals from Marlin to complete the front housing rebuild.
Swap the F150's to the rear so its leveled out kinda rides like this \ front is way up.
Got a doubled adapter only due too i dont wanna extened my front drive shaft twice.
Then get Front bumper and sliders done

Im going to see faber the 26

I hate to say it but....Zack your rig won't be ready for takeover. Even if you make up here the 26 there just isnt enough time to get all the work done your wanting. Do you have a definate list of priorietys for the weekend of the 26th, or is it still yet to early for that?

I'm concerned about the same thing. Is the front suspension/steering already together and ready to go? All you need is some seals and to bolt the junk together? If it were me, I would get the front axle and steering bolted up, weld up the rear suspension, and get your shocks ordered ASAP. Once that's done you can see how much time is left for armor and duals.. If you have to redo half of a driveshaft after takeover so be it. I built mine and daniel's in less than 30 minutes. It's not a very hard job if you go square.

Skip the duals, forget the flatbed for now.

Get your suspension done, sliders, and front bumper / winch. Everything after that is just more stuff.

Driveshafts are easy peezy to make. If you have to do that twice, it's no biggie. That's the one thing I'd rather do twice.

If you wanna do Takeover, keep it simple. Just my two cents from the master of making it complicated

How about a list of to do's from where you currently stand with this project. I bet once you sit back and look at the big picture its no big deal, but if you look at it as though your eating an elephant, your still only gonna take one bite at a time.

Faber, I dont know just something to support and protect my duals- I cant make takeover due to swimming we have a banquet to attend wich i have to speak at since i won Nationals.

I am having trouble finding the length and brand and price for shocks

swimmerzack
03-16-2010, 04:44 PM
well this next weekend, I would like to get the front bumper, sliders, duals put in new x memeber and skids- While your doing the welding that takes skill of a master i can swap out my rear axle, or maybe i'll just do it down here i dont know i just wanna get up kick it and wrench

I am having trouble finding the length and brand and price for shocks

1. Install springs
2. Weld up shock mounts
3. Flex suspension
4. Measure collapsed and extended lengths
5. Find shocks that match your measurements

swimmerzack
03-16-2010, 04:47 PM
I best go order my F150 shock mounts then

Sounds like a heck of a buisy weekend but we can prolly swing it. Bending tube gets better results when its a 2 man job, so expect to stay buisy, and we will get ya some gloves and safety glasses when we go pick up the consumables. When are you wanting me to place the tubing order? Has the design chang or are we gonna shoot from the hip?

The shock mouns you want are f 250 shock mounts. Do you still have the part number I gave ya, from pirate forum?

79coyotefrg
03-16-2010, 07:40 PM
yall talking about the f250 front shock towers??

Zack, heres what you need (in my opinion) to do first.

1. assemble front axle
2. install hi steer (i can assemble the arms and tierod and align the frontend)
3. weld up spring hangers for rear suspension. and hang f150 springs on ifs axle
4. sliders and front bumper
5. wheel the truck maybe at Ross or superlift or the gravel pits near Gittinit :dunno:

installing the dualcases takes alot of time, you have to modify the driveshafts, interior and crossmember

have you found a good deal on a Allpro ebrake kit yet??

swimmerzack
03-16-2010, 07:42 PM
Yea I still have it, Well Faber how bout we just focus on front bumper the silders and the cross memeber rockers and my extending front shaft just so we dont clutter your shop up with steel for you too get tempted with or trip over.

Hell who knows we might just go crazy-

Glen What tcase does Zack have? I'm aware it has 4.7 gears but is it forward or top shift? Is his spare case forward or top shift?

swimmerzack
03-16-2010, 09:56 PM
There both 21 spline gear drive top shift

gittinit
03-17-2010, 02:30 PM
Sweet! that makes it easier to keep the 4.7 case as the rear case.

swimmerzack
03-17-2010, 02:33 PM
Its also better to have 4.7's in the rear too right

gittinit
03-17-2010, 05:24 PM
I think the best reason for putting low gers in the rear case is strength. If at any one time you want just one case in low the rear should be that one, and most likely youll want that one case to be the 4.7 geared case. The torque is multipied through the cases. Multiplying all the torque through 4.7 gears 1st would add more tress to the rear case than multiplying though 2.28 1st.

Now where is that spoon icon. We gotsa feed the noobs! :flipoff4:

:D hey I started to read but like Jordan says ENglish/Reading is kicking my ass

Reading, as Aaron has shown, kicks my ass, so we're floatin' the same boat.

Basically, you want the torque to be multiplied as close to the tires as you can to reduce stress upstream. Putting 4.7 gears in front of a stock case would double the torque the rear case sees when it doesn't really have to be taking any additional abuse. You're already putting 2.28 times the torque into the rear case, so to do it 4.7 times would be really really unneccessary.

Hopefully that made sense and reinforced what Michael said. If not, we'll keep trying :D

In that pic, it was hard to tell they were even threaded. I was more than anything just messing with Glen. I gotta keep that blood rushing to his head every now and then just to make shure he is still alive, and well. :D

It did appear that those studs had the hex built into the tops and as though they were slightly longer than the arp studs I got from frontrange, as they have more thread showing than Mine do. The studs I have don't have the lil hex built in either. That shure would have been nice for installation.

Chris, are you coming up for the event??

He will be lucky if he can manage to make those factory tinfoil spring hangers last through the 4s. Not only will getting a stronger spring hanger help his driveline angles, it will help get back a more stockish caster. The proper caster angle is a must for flat towing. Could you imagine flat towing a vehicle with death wobble? Scarry.

If ya manage to make it up here with that thing Zack, we will fix you up a beefier mount for the towbar bracketry, before I let you back on the road with this thing. It is something we can tie in with the front bumper.

What are ya welding in that pic Glen? Please tell me your not welding the ford shock towers on without the shocks.

Please get more pics, as the work is being done, if you want the best possible advice.

What Jordan said, ice it and whack it with a hammer, regular ice works, just dry ice if ya can find it is a better option... just clean it up as good as possible, rough up the surface some for adhesion and it needs to have all that tar goo up, the liner wont stay on it very well, and doesnt look very good.... tryin to get that tar up with a grinder is a real mess.... tape off what ya dont want the liner on and use a narrow paint roller, brush the edges.... I have done a couple cruisers and broncos over the years but have just painted Krackers floors as I was to cheap to rhino line it right now.... maybe later....

I dunno, it all depends on how bad it really is. That extra inch further forward might mean alot at some point. It is something that won't be any harder, or easier to change later on, than it would right now. You might could save you money on the boomerang shackles if you did move it. Well see CLint is exatly inclined on the knowledge of a camera so we didnt get any.

After I bleed the brakes I'll get some

Why would you have to convince someone to let you work on your truck? I'm confused. Is Clint your daddy or mabye your life partner? Huh?

because its an all purpose any position rod that gets excellent penetration (something you wouldnt know about) thru dirt, rust or paint that even an idiot can use, oh wait, maybe NOT

Hmmm...

I'm not an expert in stick welding, though I can run a strong bead. 6011 was the most difficult rod to learn to use, so our instructor had us learn on that rod. If you can weld with a 6011, you can weld any other rod.

I guess I'm wondering why you're using an 'all-purpose' rod that's quite difficult to use. You don't have to shoot through rust, dirt, debris - you've got a grinder and other cleaning tools.

I'm not trying to launch into a rod debate. I'm just curious as to why you're not a proponent of a different rod. I had good luck with the 70-series rods.

Thanks for your info., Glen! Please, do enlighten me :D

EDIT: I found some reading. Looks like a good site for other welding tips, too!

This is just my personal opinion..But 6011 seems to be one of the easiest rods to use. Granted a 70 is stronger it's harder to weld with(again in my opinion). 6011 is a good all around rod that's about all I use. And FYI for anyone that want to bring up aarons driveshaft issue at the park..I had to use a 6013 on it and it wasn't cleaned properly for using the 6013. I had ran out of 6011's. :)

Ya i had to trim some of the shifting rod that went into the adapter it was rubbing n the adapter and making shifting hell'a hard. So now Im waiting for my skid, crossmemeber, e-brake combo so i can get the angle right.

my square drive shaft keeps hitting my stock crossmemeber so i dont drive it much right now.

also I found out i need to move my rear shackle hanger back about 4 inches or so.

found me some TG shock hoops really cheap :sorry Glen:

dude, get some u bolts(you'll have 4 when you get your flip kit) get them over the top of the frame and let them dangle down, strap up your tcase and move the cross member back to the rear tcase and use the bolts to hold it up there. Ive ran mine like this for the last 6 years. Mikes gonna have it on its way in the next couple weeks i think

Nah, I knew you weren't bein' a jerk. I just know to play to my strengths :D

I just have had a different experience. Not sure why, but it is what it is.

I was a TA for the welding class this past semester at the UofA when I had time. I worked with one guy in particular that just couldn't seem to grasp the concept. He was using 6011. I tried him on a 6013 and saw a great improvement in his welding ability. I did a 6011 to 6013 to 701? and found the 70 series to be the prettiest and most intuitive for me.

That was just my experience, so I was curious as to why 6011 was recommended. Now I know :D

Yep, almost all will be a generator-run stick welder. I always thought this was due to simplicity. No gas needed (plus, shielding gas in a possibly windy situation = poor weld), you can always see how much filler you have (rod is visible versus concealed MIG spool), and I've heard a stick weld is generally the strongest weld available (especially for the complexity).

MIG tends to be a more expensive technology, which is why I think many people haven't picked it up or have any desire to swap over. Why abandon what works?

So, there ya have it. Nothing like a little MIG vs. ARC debate :o

Zack, glad you got the t-case dilemma figured out! When do you think this thing will be on the trails? And don't say, "Before yours!!!" :p

Stick welders are required by law in some forms of metal construction becouse the flux is in the rod, much as a fluxcore wire welder. With a mig the gas can be blown away from the weld causing a loss of penetration, prosity, and brittle welds. A MIG is by far superior in all controled situatons to a stick welder and comes in second to a tig welder, as far as machines go, considering the operators are equal in their abilitys to us them. MIG and TIG welder are shop based welders becouse by design they need a controlled environment. Stick welders are used on service trucks becouse of their ability to produce quality welds in harsh conditions, not becouse they are "better".

It all boils down to the operators. There is no way I would trust my life to my welds using a stick welder, or a TIG, but I would trust yours, mine, and my kids lives to my welds with a mig welder. Hell to be absoutly truthfull every welder operator has their quirks, just as Glen likes one specific type of rod, I like to burn my welds in fast and hot. Others using TIG may starve their welds of filler, or go to light on heat, and wind up without enough penetration, on an otherwise good lookig weld.

Yall can easily identify a bad weld, but I doubt to many of us shade tree fabricators can really idenify a GOOD weld. :welder: My personal prefrences lie with a MIG but thats what I honed my skills on and I don't, for the life of me, understand how yall can build anything more than a BBQ grill to hold up to hard use, with a stick welder, no matter what number rod your riding. It is aparent yall can and do though, I have seen your rigs go.

I hate to tell you, but you trust your life to stick welds every day. The bridges you drive on and dams holding our rivers back were built using stick welders, as well as many other civil works projects. A good weld is a good weld, regardless of process..

Edit: I see you were talking about trusting YOUR welds with a stick welder. You are right in that it all boils down to the operator.

Man, I really derailed this, huh?!

Good information, though.

It is all in the operator. Unlike Faber, I like to go a little slower but still get solid penetration. I just like to take my time. And here come the love-making jokes...

i would trust Michaels mig welds over most anyone I know. but remember besides my sliders (Michael welded up) everything on my truck prior to the wreck was welded with a 6011.

Jordan, a 6011 wasnt designed to look pretty, it was designed for strong welds that dont cause the surrounding metal to become brittle from excessive heat. A 6011 can burn a very nice and deep bead on 90 amps that a 7018 would require 160 amps to get the same penitration.
it doesnt surprise me at all that your instructor or whoever he was couldnt make a 6011 bead look good and the 6013 and 7018 looked nice. they were designed to have slag that would break off very easily so that another bead could be ran over the top of them.
the 6013 particularly was made to be a filler rod, it wont penetrate shit but will fill a hole in a hurry.

If you can get the parts together and get the truck to Haskell, I'll help you put it together. Hope you bought that crossmember while it was still on sale!

Well that sucks about the crossmember, but even when it's not on sale it's the best deal out there. Buy from a vendor and save a little bit. I'm about an hour away from Arkadelphia

I may just Glenfer it till i get my refund check back in.
I just looked at all the vendors its the cheapest by far....

We used ford shackels to fix the fact that there hitting the frame. I just saw that the relocation hangers on marlin are like 29$ over the usual 39. might get them
