View Full Version : Project: Chicken Runner *LITE*

Bored, broke and tired of watching people build cool stuff I figured I could at least put some elbow grease into Chicken Runner. Figured I could eek out a few dollars here and there for expendables. (cut off wheels, grinding disks, rattle can).

I don't expect this project to go anywhere fast. Wanted to work on my fab skills mostly. If it gets finished.. fine, if not that's okay too.

Bought it same time I bought BR. Engine was dead, harness butchered but the body was solid. It's an '86 DX model.

Sold some stuff, gave some stuff away....

Getting lighter and lighter

Silly Body Plans:
I want to get good at sheet metal/body work.
Cut the top off, leave the windshield frame only. Lexan.
Narrow the body width about 6"
Bob the tail.
Cut the front radiator and fender wells off. DONE
Attach remaining sheet metal to toooob (one day ).
Would like to keep the doors and glass and do a soft top of some sort. Something for winter/rain. Mohave heater maybe...
Open wheel wells/openings, clearance firewall.
Simple sheet metal dash panel.. yadda.. yadda..

Silly Chassis Plans:
Clean up the frame buy hacking off all the IFS weldments and other unwanted parasites.
Move the motor back some???? Maybe...
Flat belly.
Semi-exo.
Full hydro.
Link suspension is a must. Waaaaay off tho $$$$$.

Unknowns:
Prolly go with Toy axles only because I have them. By the time you build'm up you could have D60's tho.
Figured a 38'ish size tires... dunno...
I have a 22r short block, might build it and run propane???

Who knows what'll happen... I just wanna DO SOMETHING to it!!!!

GOT COPE?

x2 on the no top chop. Nothing worse than those crazy summer days when it decides to rain for 20 minutes just hard enough to soak you and make you miserable.

Dovetail the front.

Yeah, you could gut it, cut everything off behind the cab and rehang the rear outer skins on the tube work.

This thing looks cool... literally.

Dovetail the front.

True.

Maybe. I like pinched noses on reg width. I think the narrowing sort of replaces dovetail and pinch. Not sure I want both, might end up looking like a canoe!!

i support :saw: i like the plans but no 60s, i say cut everything you dont need make it light on toy axles.

Sort of what I was thinking too. And, gives me more :welder: experience on the Toy axles ;) Lite and very basic will be the goal for sure.

x2 ....cut the rear off, then tube and 4link...that would be interesting.

Yeah, still kinda thinking thru that one. I like a "back half" rig in the pickup variety. I want to keep the 4R body tub tho. Could still whack the frame and work the tube through the body etc...

Thanks for all the input guys.
It's still just a stupid pipe dream for now.

Whittled on Chicken Runner a little more today. Removed the windshield, inner fenders/rad-support, some shields underneath etc...

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC03768-1.jpg

Cleaned up the firewall a little. Removed the brake and fuel lines for now might need them later. Kept this little support, might come in handy later.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC03766.jpg

Cleaned out the inside and removed the remaining wiring. If anyone needs the top switch/rear window brain gizzmo lemme know. All I wanna keep is the tail light harness.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC03767.jpg

Playin' around with bobtail, high clearance and narrowing ideas. Gotta make some HD saw horses soon.

Might could use the rear window brain. But you can keep it until I'm sure I need it.

FWIW I dont like the high clearance look. I like bobs keeping the sweep of the lower fender. And once you bob it, you probably wont need the high clearance cut anyway.
In other words (IMO) the high clearance cut is for people who refuse to bob yet still attempt to keep their @ss from dragging.

Yeah, looking at most of the bob'd T4R's, they are not HC'd. Depends on how bad I hack up the bob will determine if HC comes into play. :p

Hey, U never said why you'd keep the top.

Thanks, we'll see how it goes. I predict the project comes to a screeching halt when major component procurement is required.

well i had one bent today that follows the angles and stuff, its just the tcase mount holes are off centered and the place that bent this piece can't find the measurements so i have to mark them for them to cut, i'd like to just lay one on top of the other and trace the holes or just get the measurements from you somehow.

haha no i'll have 2 stock ones after this weekend, but with the stock ones, you can't really get the dimensions on where to place the holes to mount the t case. i have a xmember bent up already, i just odn't know about the holes. i'll probably just handle it the hard way but i'd rather get my hands on a bud and just mock them up, because the one i had made is basically a bud. but thanks anyway.

No prob.. lemme know.

Did as much reading, research and common sense anylasis as I could stand and moved forward with some chicken bobbin' today. And guess what? I SUCK at it!!

If I had to do it over again:
- Have a helper to hold stuff in place while tacking.
- Cut the rear section in half or perhaps three pieces.

It's alllllllll about the fitment, I should'a thought to cut it up earlier and taken my time (had an appointment at 4pm so I rushed it a little). But, a valuable lesson learned

I used a cut off wheel, I would suggest trying a sawzall. The c/o wheel removes more material and makes errors more obvious (IMO) which makes it harder to line up and a bigger gap to weld.
Im saying if you're unsteady (innately or accidently) that c/o wheel is going to show it.
I think the sawzall would be more slightly more accurate and precise. I also think it would help to have someone hold the sides of the fenders steady as you get towards the end of the cut.

Actually, I used a CO wheel. Only used the SA on the very bottom pinch weld where it was hard to get to w/CO. It wasn't that hard to keep straight on the outsides, a little more difficult on the bed ridges.

I used a cut off wheel, I would suggest trying a sawzall. The c/o wheel removes more material and makes errors more obvious (IMO) which makes it harder to line up and a bigger gap to weld.

I started to use the SA but it's so dang violent that I couldn't use it (hence, having a helper like you said). I did use a jig saw on one of the wheel well openings a long time ago (experimenting) and that worked out.

Again, I think another set of hands and putting it back together in smaller pieces would have been better. You ought to hang that tail piece for fitting 20 times by yur self. It ain't fun!!! :p

 I'm gonna leave mine where it is !

Thanks Kyle! Assume you mean dovetail? IDK, yet. Narrowing was the original idea. Sheesh.. after that ordeal, I don't wanna cut and grind another piece of sheet metal again... for a while! ;)

looks good to me ted. I wouldnt even high clearance it. i think even with the slant not matching up it looks good

Yeah, I need to look it over again and see if there is a way I can modify the sheet metal to make it blend a little better. I really wish I'd paid a little closer attention to that part and cut it to fit the first time 'round. The earlier post I made of that red 4R is killer, I'd love to know how they did it.

Bottom line is the experience is worth it, some time and expendables that I already had on hand. Eventually I want to bob BR which will be much easier than the 4R. Unfortuanally, the Chicken Runner will prolly find it's way to the scrap yard eventually. The reality is: no way I can afford to build it up. :o

Tho it was a bummer to pull and send the MC unit back, it was a pleasure to deal with the guy. He was nothing but helpful and didn't charge me a penny. Only cost I had was shipping it out there.

Drove it to work this morning, works like a champ. No 2nd gear "snag" anymore and the broken clip was replaced so no more "floaters" in there. ;)

I am still interested in the bumpers if you have them. I just don't know when the time or money will be available.

Ha! U phunny.

Bah, ain't nothin special. It's just a G52 with a better bearing. I think the W56's are better.... IDK tho. It's what came in BR so I ran with it. A turbo tranny would be nice. ;)

Ya know, I had a milisecond thought to change that seal out while the tranny was... on vacation  But, being tight w/$ dictated my old moto: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Well crap! Got the tranny out tonight to find it was the trans seal leaking. I never bothered to smell the goop coming out of it, just assumed it was engine oil - sure looked like it... (don't ask me how I missed that)

....anyway. The reason it took so long to get the tranny back in the first place was the shipper damaged it in transit back to me and was sent back to Marlin before it made it this far. I got it last Mon and installed and drove it till yesterday when I saw the leak.

I was never told what kind of damage the trans took in the shipping mishap. Only that it looked like the tote that it was in exploded. whatevah. Marlin's ops manager said they went "all the way through it" again....

So a couple of questions:
1) Send back to Marlin (again) and have them fix it?
2) Try to replace the seal myself and hope it works?
3) Should I take the clutch and pplate out and brake clean them?
4) Replace the clutch?

Note: The clutch is not slipping and I don't think any gear oil got on the contact surfaces tho the pplate has a light film on the outside of it.

R&Ring 4x transmissions SUCK! I was just getting the crick out of my neck from last week!!!!!!!

I like the way you think Ed. Unfortunately, I have to get BR on the road and.... don't think Marlin would go for all that.

Anyway, called them this morning. The Ops manager was very apologetic and offered to send a new seal. Can't wait that long so the local stealership had a seal. Brake cleaned all the clutch peicy parts. Taking a break while they dry out. Sheesh, it's hot out already!!!

Good news is there was no gear dope on the clutch disc at all. The old seal had three nicks in it. I probably made one or two of them taking it apart.

When Ben get's home this evening we get to install it..... AGAIN!!

Okay, the BR tranny is old news and working great so it's time to drag Ol" Chicken Runner out today (wow, is the weather nice or what!)

Did more cleaning and pressure washing. Had a massive red wasp nest in the head liner. Ended up wiping out the whole family... it's amazing, I killed the nest at the barn, brought the 4r down to the house and the few bees that were still "on patrol" found me. Nature is amazing!

Removed the head liner, pin striping, fuel door, fuel neck and misc parts. Took measurements to build a simple roll around "body dolly". Tired of loading it on the tractor back and forth to and from the barn. Gonna tuck it away in the basement and push it in and out when I wanna work on it... easy shmesy.

If anyone needs a 1st gen T4R fuel door and related filler parts lemme know. *FREE*

TaDaaa...
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC04068.jpg

Was able to wedge some 1x4 pcs behind the square hole. I was going to weld in strips behind the edges but this worked out easier. The key is trim and fit and trim and file and fit and file and trim and fit and file and trim... you get the picture. :p

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC04070.jpg

Tacked into place. I used a pc of brass stock behind the spot welds to help prevent blowing thru. Worked out good. It was also helpful to use a tiny flat blade screwdriver to help align the edges together nice and smooth.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o6/TRoss5/86%204Runner/DSC04071.jpg

All in all not to bad. I don't know how the pro paint and body guys do it and make money at it. Sheesh! It's not perfect by any means but fun to do.

Gonna tackle the botched up bob-job mis-match on the bottom of the quarter panels next... I think I have a plan

As you all know I have the "chicken" now. I would like to know what you would do about the frame.

one: SAS the 86 frame and bolt the body on.

two: use the 81 frame I just picked up, got a deal on it and it has the axles, leaf springs,push-pull steering parts and drive shafts still , move the body mounts around for the T4R body, and beef up the front spring hanger.

I would choose 2 or section the the two frames together. The SFA frame has a higher frame arch that allows for a lower rig. That allows for more uptravel and keeping a relativity flat springs.

bob the runner and use option #2

Lula Tacoma
10-31-2012, 08:00 PM
The runner has already been bobbed, I will prop end up using the 81 frame, alot less cutting and i'll be able to keep it low. I think a RUF/chevy 63 swap may be a good starting point. Now I just got to save money and spend it on all the parts I'll need. Will a 5speed trans/tcase from a 3.0 truck fit behind a 22r with a bell housing swap? I may try to go with the 3.0 if I can find a harness to make it run, a buddy of mine grandfather has the motor, it has around 15k on a rebuild and a set of hot cams, I can get it on the cheap along with alot of other parts he stripped from a 90 pickup he totaled out.

The R150 will not bolt up to a 22re w/o a R151 bellhousing which are like hen's teeth to find. Also 3VZ harness and ECU should be easy to find since a lot of people pull them for motor swaps. 3vz is far from a good motor but if you can get it cheap on a rebuild it might be a viable option. 1UZ is another since it only weights about 50-75lbs more than a 22re with 100 more hp. Also while you are getting parts from the 90 if you choose grab the IFS V6 rear axle.

Lula Tacoma
11-01-2012, 05:13 PM
CHEAP and the fact it is low miles is the only reasons I am thinking about the 3.0. I may hold out to find a 22r I can run off of pane. I am wanting to keep this thing low buget and simple. The axle was messed up in the crash, along with the whole side of the truck, his grandfather lives in the MTNs and hit the wall of rock beside the road up there.
