Finally got a new front bumper built this past Sunday. My friend Duby did pretty much all the work, and built one for himself the day before. I think I put my stock bumper thru just about as much torture as it could take without it falling off (which it was VERY close to doing). So I'm very happy to have something MUCH stronger on there now. It's 1.5"x.120 wall tube and is essentially winch-ready, though it'll be a while before I've got the funds for a winch. Still have a few things to do on it, such as adding sheet metal to the top, figuring out what I want to do with the front (sheet metal "skid" or expanded metal, cleaning up the welds and painting it, etc. I'll also be adding clevis mounts soon. Below are links to pics of both our bumpers. Sorry the only having a few dark pics of his. It was late when we finished mine, and since I live a few hours away from him, I couldn't stick around to get pics of his in daylight.

Sweet setup Rick. Are you going to do the blinker mod? A couple more scratches on the side from when I last saw your rig :D

Thanks guys! Mark, I haven't decided what I'll be doing with the blinkers. Right now they're just zip-tied into place up against the apron. I currently only have 1 corner light :D and the one that's still there is cracked and doesn't work (and it's pretty much just dangling in place). Duby and I had talked about the possibility of integrating small round LED lights (something like 2" round maybe) into the bumper somehow. We'll see, though...

When I was researching my tube bumber I had inquired about some led's because I was unsure if I wanted to cut a hole in my corner lamps. Also I was going to put a thin plate of sheet metal in the corners there and cut a hole for the LED. Since you have the Budbuilt skid I would not think you would need much of a skid in the front. At least on the one I was toying with. Just something like \ / to cover the rad till I got to the skid. Since you have a body lift it would be more exposed I'd imagine.

lobsterboy is getting one similar to the one I want. I'll get some pics this weekend when he gets it on and post it up.

i realy like the lower tube on the front. it looks nice how it curves instead of of just being angular. nice.

My radiator is not much more exposed than it would be without a BL... my BL is only an inch. Still, though... need something to cover up that gaping hole in the front. Figure I might as well make it something durable, as that's kinda the whole point of having a custom front bumper.

On which one? Duby's? I really like his curved lower section. He's incredibly talented with that bender. I actually think his looks better than mine, but mine was a lot easier to build, and as is usually the case, time was of the essence.

LOL! Woohoo!! My first stars!! :D Yeah, I really like the way both of 'em turned out. He's a friggin' great guy and excellent fabricator considering how much experience he's had. Between the tube bed, front bumper, and other things he's done for me, I owe him a ton.

I hope to make the Aetna ride, so if we don't get a chance to meet before then (assuming you're going), you can see mine then.

I can't be committing to anything like that until I find some damn employment. This shit is getting ridiculous. Which reminds me... I still need to call you...

Why not go for an exocage? You've got most of what you need already on the truck and you only need to do the front half of the truck!

Bumper looks sick.

Thanks for the compliment, Nilson. There's plenty of other stuff I want to do before doing an exo. I'll probably do an internal before an exo anyway.

Looks good, your running 33x10.50x15's with a 1" BL right? I like it.

I like the tube bed too!

Rick's running 33x10.50x15 BFG M/Ts, AAL+shackle, King coilovers, and a 1" BL.

Thanks, Im waiting for my BL to show up right now, Im running a similar set up and plan on going to that size tire. Looks good, hows it wheel?

synovus
10-12-2005, 11:13 AM
It wheels very well, actually. I'm continually surprised with the capabilities of the truck. Pretty much the only wheeling I do is rock crawling, so I can't comment on its manners/abilities in the desert, but as long as you're not getting too extreme with the hi-speed stuff, I don't think you'll have any problems with just the 1" kit. Between the BL and the new tires, you'll be about 1.5" higher overall, which will be nicely noticeable. And if you're like me, you'll really appreciate the extra (albeit small) amount of ground clearance you'll gain with the tires.

I notice you're currently running the Ivan Stewart 16" rims. What rims and what size will you be running with your 33's? I run a 15x8 steel rim. The one thing I've learned with the 33x10.50's on that size rim is to not run the air pressure too low. I ran 10-12 psi the first few trips, but after blowing a bead on two different tires on two consecutive runs (both aired right back up with help from friends' air compressors), I learned that it's probably better to keep them around 16 or so on the trail.

Looks good! That design is pretty similar to how I built mine. I would like to install some shock hoops and run a tube from the top of the bumper, through the core support and weld it to the shock hoop. Super strong so I can run a winch right off the top of it :D

Here is how I did some blinkers, just cut into the tube and inset LED's into it. I'll have to get some updated pictures. At first I didn't cut into the tube far enough and the light hung out a little but it's cooler now.
