I am looking to pick one up for about 450. I was wondering how you like it and how the conversion went.

Good luck! Are you swapping the 3rd or getting like a Currie rear axle or something?

Haha yea DR board. I'm not a big poster on there but to answer your question I honestly have no clue. I posted this right after I heard my friend got one for his Ranger and told me there's one left. If you don't mind, could you explain?

Just stick to a stock rear end, and learn to drive your truck first. Please. You are talking about another world as far as cost, and engineering are concerned. You have no need for a different rear end, and would be wasting money. Come out with us next weekend to Johnson Valley, and have a good time. Your truck will be fine, just as it is.

Never done a conversion, so can't answer that question. Our Toyota rear axles are fairly strong and should withstand plenty of abuse, though, but obviously they don't have nearly the aftermarket support that the re-knowned Ford 9" has.
I have heard of at least one Tacoma owner in So Cal that did a 9" conversion years ago, but don't remember who or anything about it. If you get with some of the local TTORA So Cal crew, ask for Kevin H. (ToyPrerunr) or Mike K. (BADASSTACO). Hopefully they're still around. They should know more about it.
Anyway, below are some links with lots of good info on the venerable Ford 9". You'll want the 31 spline from a truck for added strength, not the 28 spline that came on some of the cars and early 66-77 Broncos. Also, Lincoln town car 9" axles came with coil springs and disc brakes - so that might be a cool setup, but I think their bolt pattern is 5x5. Full-size truck bolt patterns should be 5x5.5.

Yea just come out to Johnson Valley with us and you'll be surprised what these things can do just stock, and learning to drive it hard/fast will take time as well ;)

Honestly the 8.4" or 8" are both very stong and can handle serious abuse. You can upgrade the shafts and it will handle about the same abuse the 9" can handle.
